2 DATE & SUBJECT March 6, Fourth Sunday of Lent This man welcomes sinners and eats with them. (Luke 15:1-3, 11-32) A man of my acquaintance was disappointed to learn that I am a Christian. But why? he demanded of me. Christianity is a religion for losers! I laughed at his unsuspecting insight. Yes, it is, I admitted. But the difference between us is, you think that is an insult, and I think that is the good news. Losers, like the prodigal son, are grateful for the invention of Christianity. But he is not the only one. The sick, the blind, the lame, the crazy all have a lot to be thankful for. So do the dead. So do the poor, those who mourn, those who are persecuted. Outsiders, women, the despised...when you begin to count them up, a lot of people fall into the category of those who have lost something and long for forgiveness, comfort, or justice. The prodigal son was not the only loser in the story. The father had lost his son, which was a crushing blow. And what the elder son suffered from was perhaps the most devastating loss of all: the ability to feel compassion for his own brother. The Christian story promises to redress all these losses, whether from sin, suffering, or spiritual sickness. All we have to do is come to the feast. Application: Prayerfully consider where you might be called to be an ambassador for Christ right now. Is there a place where reconciliation is needed in your life, relationships, community? (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S Welcome to worship, Christian education and fellowship in the name of Jesus, the Savior of the world. 3 Greetings of Peace. Pastor s Column It is hard to believe that Palm Sunday is two weeks away! Lent seems to move more quickly each year. This weekend we hear the gospel of the Prodigal Son. This story is near and dear to our hearts. Each time I hear this narrative, something different impacts my reflections. It is so layered in its meaning. It can offer some rich insights and images for Lent. Look at the closed-mindedness of the Scribes and Pharisees. Consider the openness of the Father s heart. What about the waywardness but humility of the younger son? Or look at the obedient but proud older son. Be amazed at the extravagance of the forgiveness and love offered in the celebration when the son comes back home. And there is so much more! This parable is so powerful, even Rembrandt painted it depicting both sons in Return of the Prodigal Son. The artist felt both sons needed healing and forgiveness. Both needed to come home. Both needed the embrace of a forgiving father. But from the story itself, as well as from Rembrandt's painting, one can get the impression that maybe hardest conversion to go through is the conversion of the one who stayed home! we need God s mercy; we, too, can return to the Father and be accepted with great joy. In fact, he is ready and eager to accept us back! Perhaps each of us can take some time this week to read this biblical passage on our own and take some time to sit with the story. Maybe we can discover that we need God s mercy; we, too, can return to the Father and be accepted with great joy. In fact, he is ready and eager to accept us back! It is as simple as reading chapter 15 in the Gospel of St. Luke. On another topic - a few weeks ago Bishop Lennon was not feeling well and he was taken to the hospital. It happens he needed a heart procedure. The bishop recently sent this memo and I wanted to share it with you. He writes: It is with great gratitude that I thank the faithful of the diocese for their prayers and support during these recent days. I also thank the physicians, nurses, and staff at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center for their expert care. I have been humbled by all the heartfelt wishes for my successful recovery. I want all to know that this prayerful support has strengthened me through this stressful period. I have been resting comfortably in my residence and consulting with my doctors to assure that I return to my duties in good health. I look forward to returning to the service of our Church and diocese soon. Be blessed, and do well on your Lenten journey. Peace, Fr. Gary shelter and training to seminarians, in addition to providing pastoral care and catechesis. Your donation today helps restore the Church and build the future in the aftermath of Soviet rule. Visit: OPERATION RICE BOWL We journey with CRS Rice Bowl to the Central American country of Honduras where we meet students who are learning that its better to help your neighbor learn and grow than to leave him or her behind.
