2 DATE & SUBJECT May 29, 2016 The Most Holy Body and Blood They all ate until they had enough. (Luke 9:11-17) Took, blessed, broke, gave. Those are the four actions Jesus repeats both here and at the Last Supper. They spell out the activity of our Eucharist, as well as our call to be food for a hungry world. Took and broke are both aggressive, even violent words. They remind us that Jesus was taken, and broken; what we commemorate at our table is not a gentle story. Blessed and gave are both words of generosity. They remind us that our dinner is a celebration, a party where gifts are given and each member is honored. There is cause for rejoicing here. Curious, though, how the blessing comes after the taking; how the sharing follows the breaking. The violence is mixed in with the gladness, and sorrow penetrates the celebration. Unless the bread is broken, you cannot have the sharing. In the same way, we come to understand that until we are willing to be taken, we cannot know the fullness of the blessing that awaits us. And unless we are prepared to be broken, we cannot give ourselves entirely to the mission that is ours. How do you exercise your priestly responsibility of blessing? What does the Eucharist teach you? Where has your faith taken you? How have you been blessed? Where is your brokenness? What do you give? Application: We live in a culture of cursing: episodes of road rage as we drive, impatience with the foibles of others, sarcasm and a critical eye for everyone who gets in our way. Start today to exercise the power of blessing. Bless and do not curse everyone you meet. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S A warm welcome to members and guests who gather today for worship and Christian fellowship. May we be blessed as we bless God and one another. It began as a day commemorating the soldiers who fought in the Civil War. After the hostilities between Union and Confederate forces ceased, the widows and friends of slain Southerners showed their love and gratitude to their fallen heroes by WEEKEND MASS CELEBRANT 6/4 & 6/5 4:30 p.m. Fr. 8:00 a.m. Fr. 10:00 a.m. Fr. 12:00 noon Fr. 3 Greetings of Peace! Pastor s Column This Monday, May 30, is Memorial Day. This is a day we remember all those who gave their lives in service of our country. Let us be thankful for our service men and women that they were there then - and here now. Mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am on Memorial Day. Speaking of mass at St. Joan, beginning in June the Tuesday morning mass will be at 8:00 am, through summer. (After Labor Day, in September, the Tuesday morning mass will move to 9:00 am, so the Parish School can join us for mass.) Please join with me in offering Congratulations to all Graduates! Our parish school here at St. Joan of Arc just celebrated our Eighth Grade graduation. Well done and keep up the good work, graduates! On Saturday May 21st, we celebrated the ordination of 5 men as priests in our diocese. This is a good sign! However, we do need many more priests. Statistics show that in the next years, if things continue as they are, we will have one-half (1/2) the total number of priests we currently have in the Diocese of Cleveland. Bishop Roger Gries, OSB is known to say, We are all getting older! Here is a question on which we can reflect: What are you doing in your family and church to promote religious vocations? I say it this way: If what we do in church and if our Catholic practices are important to us, then families will encourage their sons to seriously consider entering the seminary and serve in the priesthood. If you don t do it, who will? (Just something to consider and which we can bring to the Lord in prayer!) Pray for Vocations - to the priesthood, religious life, and for service in the church. Speaking of vocations and ordinations, spring is traditionally the time ordinations are celebrated. Did you know Fr. Damian was ordained a priest May 17, 2003? Deacon Jeff ordained to the diaconate on May 13, 2000 and Deacon Denny was ordained a deacon on May 7, Congratulations Fr. Damian, Deacon Jeff and Deacon Denny! Happy Anniversary and Thank you for your generous service. Here is some humor for your soul this Memorial Day weekend. A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend. The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump. "Reverend," said the young man, "I'm so sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip." The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean; it's the same in my business." Blessings and Peace, Fr. Gary decorating their graves They also decorated the graves of the Northern dead. The news of this tribute flashed across the North like a ray of hope. In 1868, General John Logan, Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), showed his admiration for this custom by issuing an order designating May 31st as a day for all G.A.R. posts to honor the Civil War dead. Memorial Day is now a national holiday honoring all those who have died in military service. It falls on the last Monday of May. ST. PAT S HUNGER CENTER Thank you to all who helped at St. Pat s Hunger Center on Tuesday, May 24th. Also, a BIG thank you to

St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence Wow! The end of another wonderful school year will soon be here! Our school year officially ends on Friday, June 3 rd. As another academic year draws to a close, we thank the Almighty for all the happy times and for the strength we have drawn from Him during troubled times. We will conclude the year with our annual end of the year Family Picnic. We are both pleased with the students progress, and saddened to lose them for the summer! As we close this academic year, I wanted to share some of my thoughts and impressions of the school year. It has been another wonderful year. We ve had many successes and have grown as a school family. I believe St. Joan of Arc School is a great place to grow in faith and learn, and we have the potential to be even better. Our goal is to provide an excellent Catholic education and assist families in becoming more fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. We remain committed to the mission of serving our families by providing a Christ-centered education that is so critical today. Our number one priority has been and always will be the teaching of Jesus Christ. That is what makes us different from other schools. I thank God for the many blessings we have and I pray that we continue to move forward in striving for excellence in all that we do. I pray we move forward with boldness and passion as we reach out to others, spread the Good News of Jesus Christ, and learn how to put our faith in action. I have learned that it is impossible to accomplish anything without the help of others so I would like to take this opportunity to extend some well-deserved thank you! Together, we have made this a great year. THANKS to the St. Joan of Arc faculty and staff. I couldn t ask for a more dedicated, supportive group of professionals. THANKS to all of the students whose smiles, enthusiasm, and boundless energy make our work here enjoyable. Congratulations to our graduating eighth grade class! For you, graduation is more a beginning of than an end of. You ve received great roots here and now it is time to spread those wings and to put into practice and build on the great Catholic foundation you have received. Good luck also to our graduating parents! There are several families who have been at St. Joan s for many years, who mark this year as their last one. We will miss you! THANKS to all of the many parent volunteers without whom St. Joan of Arc would not be the fantastic school that it is. Catholic schools, especially super ones like ours, do not exist without the kind of commitment you have shown time and time again. You make a difference in the in the lives of our students and staff. We are truly blessed! THANKS to Fr. Gary for his neverending support of Catholic education and for your help in molding our students into fine young Christians. Notice that this meal is not fast food, nor is it only about eating. It is a larger event of gathering, teaching, healing, blessing and engaging others in making the meal happen. When we eat as a family, it is important to take the time to gather, talk, nourish relationships, pray, and participate together in making the meal happen.
