We are a diverse, gifted and joyful people who share a common belief in the Word of Jesus Christ. Our Mission, like that of Jesus Christ and His apostles, is to proclaim the Kingdom of God through living the gospel. WE GATHER AS A CHRIST-CENTERED COMMUNITY TO: CELEBRATE our faith and the presence of God in the Eucharist and in one another. IMITATE our Savior in His service to others. 2 Greetings of Peace. This is Super Bowl Sunday! I hope your team wins the big game. Personally, I would like the AFC team to win and I enjoy seeing the former coach of the Browns doing so well for all these years! We ll see how it all plays out. On Monday, February 4,join us for An Evening with Fr. Damian at St. Joan of Arc. Come and hear our former weekend Priest- Celebrant, Fr. Damian Ference, talk about life in Rome, the current situation of the Church, and his new book, The Strangeness of Truth, followed by discussion. We will gather from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM in the parish hall. Fr. Damian will be home in the USA in-between "terms" in Rome and is looking forward to coming to St. Joan of Arc. We look forward to having him, as well. Next weekend, February 9-10, our parish (along with all parishes in our diocese) will participate in the Annual Catholic Charities Appeal. Many of us have received a letter from Bishop Perez inviting us to participate in this year s appeal. I know I have received my letter. The in pew appeal with the video will take place that weekend. Thank you for your generous support. This year the Catholic Charities Appeal focuses on Pope Francis teachings on "joy and accompaniment as we are asked to Walk in Faith. Give in Joy. Our Parish Day School will have its annual major fundraiser on Saturday February 9. The event is called, A Magical Evening Out and will take place at Pinstripes in the new Pinecrest. All are welcome. 3 Youth Ministry Thank you to everyone who donated to Chagrin Falls Park Community Center during Souper Bowl of Caring on January We were able to raise $1500! Youth Ministry has a quiet month in February. Our event this month is Shopping Wars, which is on Saturday, February 9, at 7pm at Walmart in Aurora. All teens in grades 7-12 are invited to take part. At or stjoanofarcym@gmail.com Parish School of Religion Called to Protect Praesidium Program Called to Protect, a program that helps protect our children against sexual abuse, is part of the religious education curriculum of the Diocese of Cleveland. Our Catechists, who have been trained to teach this program, will teach the 3 lessons in the Called to Protect Praesidium Program on February 3/10/24 (Gr. K and Gr. 7) and February 4/11 and March 4 (Gr. 1-5). We invite our children in the Family Religion Program (Gr.3-5) to attend these important classes. Thank you for your support! PSR Evaluation Reports PSR Evaluation Reports were given on Monday, January 28, (Grades 1-6) and will be given on Sunday, February 3, (Kindergarten/Grades 7/8) to the youngest/only child. Please review, sign them, and return these evaluations to your child s PSR Catechist by Sunday/ Monday, February 10/11. Thank you! Presidents Weekend There are no PSR classes in honor of Presidents Day for Kindergarten-Gr. 8 on Sunday/Monday, February 17/18. What a special evening it was for them and their families! Our second graders (Last name: G-Z) will receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Wednesday, February 6 at 7:00pm in Church. We continue to pray for our children as they prepare for their first reception of Jesus forgiveness and peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Adult Faith Formation St. Joan of Arc Parish Lenten Retreat Please join us for our six-week Lenten retreat, Walking with St. Ignatius Our Guide on our journey to finding God. Through the teachings of St. Ignatius of Loyola, we will learn to recognize God in our lives. We will learn different ways to pray. We will look at the Scriptures with new eyes. Through the weekly presentations and conversations with fellow parishioners, we will hopefully grow in our faith and our relationship with God. Come and spend this Lent getting to see Jesus more clearly, so you can love Him more dearly! The retreat will be presented on the six Thursdays of Lent: March 7, 14, 21, 28 and April 4, 11, 2019 from 7:00-8:15pm in the Parish Hall. Our facilitator will be Mrs. Mary Kay Jones, Lay Ecclesial Minister for the Diocese and graduate of the Ignatian Spirituality Institute. 4 St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence. During Catholic Schools Week, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Frank O Linn, sent a congratulatory letter and service pin to five of our teachers who have marked milestones in years of service to Catholic education in the Diocese of Cleveland. Samantha Converse, our Kindergarten teacher, Nate Luengo, our 8 th grade teacher and Caitlin Bias, our 2nd grade teacher, were all recognized for five years of service. Our school Media Specialist, Gina Huber, was recognized for ten years and our 7 th grade teacher, Nancy Ball, was honored with a pin for her twenty years of service in the Diocese of Cleveland. We thank them for their faith-filled dedication to the work of Catholic education. And we thank our good and loving God for blessing St. Joan of Arc School with their ministry! Teaching has an extraordinary moral depth and is one of man s most excellent and creative activities, for the teacher does not write on inanimate material, but on the very spirit of human beings. The repast committee prepares the hall and assists at the luncheon. Volunteers are needed to bake a dessert, to set up, serve, or to clean up. If you have a couple hours, WE NEED YOU. 5 Faith-filled Discussions Bible Study: Thursday from 8:30-10:00 AM Please join us for an eight-week study session focused on the Gospel of John. Held in the rectory basement with interesting discussions and wonderful DVD teachings. $15 fee for the study guide. To register Catholic Grief Support Group Catholic Cemeteries Association offers a monthly Grief Support Group that meets for one hour on the third Sunday of each month (4th Sunday if it falls on a holiday) in select cemetery offices. Meetings are informal and do not build upon each other, so you can come at any time and feel right at home. Registration is not required and there is no fee. Refreshments are provided. The locations are: Holy Cross Cemetery, Brook Park - 3:00 p.m. Holy Cross Cemetery, Akron - 3:00 p.m. St. Joseph Cemetery, Avon - 3:00 p.m. Please come and join a warm fellowship of people with similar grief experiences, helping each other through prayer, shared stories, and grief recovery discussions. We offer a safe, private, and encouraging environment where you do not have to hide what you are really feeling. You do not even have to talk, just come and listen and be in the presence of those who understand. You are not alone! Breadth of Life Luncheon February 13, 2019 It s Never Too Late to Become What You Might Have Been will be Michael P. Wojciechowicz s topic at the February 13 Breadth of Life luncheon. A formally trained actor, a stand-up comedian and 14 year veteran member of Toastmasters International, Mike will be entertaining with material from his 37 years of performing. He will also tell his story of a very slow recovery from a severe, grave, serious mental and emotional breakdown. The luncheon will be held at St. Noel s Parish Hall in Willoughby Hills from Noon to 2 p.m. Cost is $18 per person which includes chicken noodle soup, lemon chicken tosca, oven roasted potatoes, mixed vegetables and cherry pie. All are welcome. Call Joan Bruening at for reservations by February 8. Arc Angels for Life participates in various prayer and outreach activities. Twice a year we encourage our parishioners in a world-wide 40 Days for Life campaign of prayer, education and witness; we support organizations which give support to pregnant women and their families, especially Womankind Maternal and Prenatal Care Center and Zechariah House; our committee supports the March for Life in DC and in other cities with an annual parish Mass, Rosary and Breakfast. Arc Angels for Life works with Lifeworks to educate young people about the sanctity of all of human life at all ages. We rely on the USCCB for information about the life issues and share this information during each October, Respect Life month, as well as thru our list. We need volunteers to help in the following areas: disseminating pro life legislation for state and federal governments, planning programs and speakers, working with other churches in the area to spread the culture of life. 6 Upcoming Programs and Events Wednesday, February 6: 7:00 p.m. A wonderful trip to the Imperial Cities of central Europe is being planned for June 8-18, The highlight of the trip will be attending the passion play in Oberammergau, Germany on June 16th. The original performance of this passion play dates back to 1634 and is now presented every ten years. Other cities to be visited include Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna, Prague and Munich.
