2 September 9, rd Sunday in What does our Catholic faith teach us about violence? Ordinary Time It s the same sad story. In television, movies, computer games and even children s cartoons, we see violence glorified and practically made a virtue. In general, society has been so desensitized to it that we forget the horrific consequences of violence and its devastating effect on human life and dignity. Today all possible forms of blood and gore are shown in graphic detail. And somehow the star of the show manages to show up a week later, ready to take on another bad guy with guns, explosives, and fearsome weapons. In this context of a casual view of violence, the Catechism deals with it under the section on Safeguarding Peace (2302ff). It is not a naïve view of peace at any cost, but a stark reminder of the great moral responsibility when deciding to use force and violence as a means of defense. At the heart of the teaching on peace and violence is the preservation of the rights and obligations of all people. Not only must one weigh gravely the choice to use violence, but also one cannot simply exclude it if it is necessary to protect and defend others. The value of human life and dignity is paramount and we are not excused from the difficult and weighty responsibility that it entails. Our best recourse is to pray for peace and justice and the grace of God to preserve it Liturgical Publications Inc Attention Liturgical Ministers: The new fall schedule is available in the sacristy, in the office, and on the parish website. If you are unable to serve at a particular mass, please find a replacement for your scheduled time. 3 From the Pastor Greetings of Peace. The NFL Season has begun. We ll see if the Browns can win a game (or more) this year! Here at St. Joan of Arc, please note a few items: Morning mass on Tuesday is 9:00 AM (now and throughout the school year). Thank you for making a note of this. Our Annual Parish Raffle which will take place at the Clam Bake is approaching - Saturday September 22 following the 4:30 PM mass. If you don t like clams there is chicken and steak, also. Come and join in the festivities. The grand prize at our raffle is $25,000. You cannot win without a ticket! Thank you for supporting our parish and this event. Please note the following about the Recycle Bins on our parish property. We have re-assessed the value of having recycling bins on site and have decided not to renew our contract. The Recycle Bins we currently have here will be removed by the company by the end of September. Please discontinue using the Recycle Bins so they can easily be removed by the recycling company. In lieu of the bins that have been here, please take advantage of the Chagrin Falls curbside collection and other drop-off recycling sites in neighboring communities. Thank you. With the school year in full swing and the parish beginning to become more active with meetings, business, and activities, please be attentive in our parking lot and in our comings and goings. I also would like to recognize our parish Ministerial Staff for the good work they do in serving our parish and you, our parishioners. Thank you Patrick Wickliffe, Sr. Ann Marie, our Principal, Shelley DiBacco, Sr Judy, Deacon Jeff and Deacon Denny. Let s also acknowledge our many volunteers and parishioners who give of their time and talent to make our parish the vibrant community it is. On another note, I received word that Fr. Clarence Williams, CPpS, will be moving from St. Joan of Arc. He has been here since July, and is now working with his religious order (The Precious Blood Missionaries) as to his next steps. Let s keep Fr. Clarence and his ministry in our prayers as he moves forward. What does this mean for us at St. Joan of Arc? At this point there is no one readily available to offer regular weekend mass assistance here at St. Joan of Arc. I am in the process of trying to line up some helpers to take a mass on some Sundays. However, it looks like I will be covering many (or all?) of the weekend masses myself (in addition to confessions, weddings, funerals, and other sacramental needs. ). As I have said before, I don t where all of this might end up. I will need to consider many options - including the possibility of adjusting our parish weekend mass schedule. Only time will tell what will happen. Let s pray that will continue to thrive as a parish and do well during this time of transition. You are in my heart and in my prayers. Have a great week! Blessings and Peace, Fr. Gary Do you have questions about becoming Catholic? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process within parish life to welcome new members into the Church, to allow baptized Catholics to catch up with sacraments they may not have received yet, and to lead each parishioner to deeper belief and renewal of their Catholic Christian Faith. For more information on our RCIA program, contact Deacon Jeff Dunlop through the rectory office or at deacjeff@gmail.com or Family Perspectives The deaf man in today s gospel had friends who brought him to Jesus for help. We are often deaf to one another and don t know it. We hurt others when we listen but do not hear. Take a tip from the deaf man and his friends recognize our deafness and then ask God to heal us.

5 St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence. We held the first of our two Back to School Nights this past week. On Thursday, September 6 th the parents of our Kindergarten through 5 th graders were invited to visit their child/children s classrooms to learn about the curriculum. The junior high parents are invited to a combination high school night/curriculum night on Wednesday, September 12 th. Our hope is that by the end of the evening our parents will have a clearer picture of our building, our teachers, our curriculum and our core values. We are so very excited for the parents to see our new MakerSpace. The library space has been redesigned so that it is now part library and part MakerSpace. One of the goals of the MakerSpace is to empower students to see themselves as inventors, builders, and creators. Renovated Learning defines a MakerSpace as an area where students can gather to create, invent, tinker, explore and discover using a variety of materials. The overall objective of the space is to encourage creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration. We are very excited about this project and we are working hard to get the project completed. Anyone who would like to help with this project by either donating money or sharing their expertise may contact the school office at Parents will also be surprised to see the new options for seating in the Kindergarten and 5 th grade rooms. Both classrooms have been totally transformed using flex seating options. A flexible seating classroom is one in which traditional seating charts are replaced with seating arrangements that allow the students to sit where they choose. The students are very excited to try the various seating options. Our first Roller Skating Party is Thursday, September 13 th from 6:30 8:30 PM at Chagrin Valley Roller Rink. The first PTO Meeting will be held Friday, September 21 st at 8:45AM in the rectory basement. All are welcome! Also, on Friday, September 21 st, our Dads will have the opportunity to come and help serve and monitor lunch at our first Dads Do Lunch. Our annual Magazine Drive continues through September 13 th. Please try to support our students and school by purchasing magazines. Using the internet is the preferred method of placing orders. Over 100 titles are available online in the digital format for tablets and smart phones. Go to and follow the prompts. Thank you for your past participation. We are always grateful for your financial assistance and your prayers. It is so nice to see the parents of our school children and our St. Joan of Arc parishioners at mass. Remember, masses are every Tuesday at 9:00 AM and, as the song says, all are welcome. We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purposes. Romans 8:28 Have a blessed and peace filled week! 6 Notes from Deacon Denny In response to recent notes suggestions, the question has arisen as to what is a Saint? How can I possibly fill that role? Perhaps some suggestions and an invitation to personal reflection on all our parts is in order. So, let s look at some Attributes of Saints over the next weeks. (Part 4) So, in the last few weeks we have been reflecting on improving ourselves, in a sense, to become saints. So, what is your target for the near term? (in academic terms; this semester?) It would be pretty hard for most of us to generate a checklist of things to accomplish so then we would become a saint. Were it only that easy. But isn t that often how we think.. If I volunteer to, or attend one more class, or I m so busy now, I can wait till later. Like checking off items on the grocery list. Perhaps though we need to look at readiness attributes or states of mind, how we react to those things around us, instead of specialized proficiencies or facts or even feel good actions. One suggestion to consider, It is quite clear, therefore, that when the Gospel speaks of peace, it should not be understood as the absence of war, what is implied here is inner peace..."before we can become real peacemakers, we must bring peace into our hearts. This is the meaning of peace according to the Gospel. A peaceful human being is someone for whom the parts of his inner world function in total and beautiful harmony. Everything works with marvelous precision in the same way that different instruments are harmonized in an orchestra to produce a magnificent symphony. Harmony between body, mind, and spirit leads to inner peace, "Inner River: A Pilgrimage to the Heart of Christian Spirituality" by Kyriacos C. Markides Perhaps it s a change of heart, how we look at things, not a completed task. Next week, some growth ideas. Ever think of playing the triangle in the Cleveland Orchestra Percussion Section? Have a great week. Tuesday, September 11th, 6:30pm Behind St. Joan of Arc School Deacon Denny Cub Scout Archery Night Join St. Joan s Cub Scout Pack 241 Boys 1st - 5th Grade For more info call or text John Stevens at Parish News Rummage Sale The Rummage Sale Committee would like to thank all those who volunteered their time or donated items to the Parish. Shawl Ministry If you would like to pick up a shawl for a loved one, please contact Nicole DeMille at Shawls are free and made with love by members of our Shawl Ministry. Chagrin Falls Film Festival Lunch The Chagrin Documentary Film Festival Salad Lunch will be at our Parish Hall on Thursday, October 4th at 11:30am. The Women s Guild has sponsored this wonderful event for the past 9 years. The great cooks of SJA will bring the salads. If you would like to attend and bring a salad, please contact Sally at as soon as possible. This lunch has been sold out every year! Hope to see you there! Jokes Little Sally, a six-year-old, complained, Mommy, I ve got a stomachache. That s because your stomach is empty, her mother replied. You d feel better if you had something in it. That afternoon, the pastor called and in the conversation, he remarked that he had been suffering all day with a severe headache. Sally perked up, Mommy says that s because it s empty, she said. You d feel better if you had something in it. A man was terribly overweight, so his doctors put him on a diet. I want you to eat regularly for two days, and then skip a full day. Then, repeat this three-day procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least five pounds. When the man returned after four weeks, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly thirty pounds! Why that s amazing! The doctor said. Did you follow my instructions? The man nodded. I ll tell you, doctor, I thought I was going to drop dead after that 3rd day. From hunger, you mean? Asked the doctor. No! It was from all that skippin the whole day!
