2 Blanket Sunday Today is the annual Blanket Sunday Drive to aid the needy in our community. New and gently used blankets, pillowcases, bed sheets and towels will be collected after all masses this weekend. If you have already cleaned out your closets, we will greatly accept your cash or check donations. Monetary donations will be deposited into the Helping Hands Fund to assist those in need during the upcoming winter months. Thank you for your support!

3 From the Pastor Greetings of Peace. It was so exciting to see many parishioners come and participate in our St. Joan of Arc Ministry Fair last weekend! Many thanks to the parish Stewardship Committee (and particularly Kathy and Al Catani) who gave so much of their time and effort for this wonderful event. It is the dedication and commitment of our parishioners who make St. Joan of Arc a vibrant parish with nearly 50 committees, groups, activities, ministries, ways of involvement, and outreach! We also are edified by so many of people who signed up to get involved or recommit to service in our parish. Remember, it is never too late to participate in the life of our parish Stewardship is not a day, it is a way of life. As I said last weekend, we are pleased to welcome Allison M. Gall to the Ministerial Staff of St. Joan of Arc Parish. (She goes by Allie ). Allie is our new Coordinator of Youth Ministry. We look forward to working with Allie and having her serve in our parish! Please extend a warm welcome to Allie. She is beginning to meet with some parents and youth leaders to plan an initial gathering and a kick off event for Youth Ministry. This is so exciting and we look forward to a great year of Youth Ministry and activities. I also announced last weekend, beginning in Advent, Sunday December 2, 2018, we will adjust our Sunday mass schedule at St. Joan of Arc. We will have two (2) Sunday masses: 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. (Saturday mass will continue to be celebrated at 4:30 PM.) St. Joan of Arc has been a one priest parish for the past 5-1/2 years during which we maintained four (4) weekend masses, since I have been able to obtain priests to assist with masses. The availability of priests to offer help - especially regularly - has been dwindling quickly. Other one priest parishes in our area have three (3) weekend masses similar to our new schedule. We are also looking at all the implications of this coming change: scheduling of ministers, coffee and donuts (this is very important!), times for PSR, baptisms on weekends (Sundays), Children s Liturgy of the Word, publicity, changes to our signs, and more. I promise to keep you up-to-date on all these matters! I am very grateful for your presence and participation at St. Joan of Arc, and please know how much I appreciate support and your understanding of this coming Sunday mass schedule change. As I am writing this column (on Monday October 8), I am preparing for a 4 day gathering with Bishop Nelson J. Perez and the priests of the Diocese of Cleveland, from Tuesday through Friday, October This convocation is the first extended gathering we have had since Bishop Perez came to our diocese in September Thank you for your Prayers. 4 Notes from Deacon Denny So where do we find personal peace, where do we find consolation with all the unsettling things that we become aware, of around us. Current events and proceedings in our world: politics; globally, nationally, locally, in our church, and even within our families. Where do we find consolation? How can we change the world? How do we modify the news that is so upsetting? Well, we can, and we did, RIGHT HERE AT HOME. "The meaning of things depends to a profound and ultimately undeterminable degree upon the relationship of those things to the goal we currently have in mind." "In the Judeo-Christian tradition, it is the Logos the word of God that creates order from chaos, and it is in the image of the Logos that man [ Let us make man in our image, after our likeness (Genesis 1:26)] is created." "Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief" by JORDAN B. PETERSON Raising the question.what is your goal? On what are you focused? Right here at St. Joan of Arc, last weekend, we got an answer, we had a beautiful and wonderful surprise that provides us with just that reminder we all need. Amidst all the turmoil at so many levels, in the news, on social media, and with nearly every means of communication, lots of folks, everywhere, were just plain grumpy. Then, there it was, the celebration, the banner over the front door of Church; the welcoming and the joy in who we are as Church, the Body of Christ. Dozens and dozens of ministries, each celebrating who they are and inviting us to join in as our gifts and calling permit. Exemplifying the sharing of their individual talents and the joy in giving of self to those around us. For most of us, we won t be changing any of those things on the news or on our smart phone, anytime soon. But thanks to the Stewardship Committee, we are called to celebrate who we are as Church, a need to be proud of what we have accomplished and to explore what we can become. We are invited to take aim at that personal goal, just barely out of reach and go for it. To expand and make better that space around us that we call community. We too can be grumpy, or we can take a cue from our own beliefs and faith traditions, the Logos in Word and Sacrament. The Committee called us to join in prayer for one another and reflect on what our own individual next step might be; something new, maintaining what I m doing (even when it becomes a chore), or simply telling someone thanks for doing what they re doing. You can still sign up, cheer up, or just share a smile. Thanks to the Committee for a job well done and lifting our Spirits, you are consolation and inspiration for us all. Office of Faith Formation Deacon Denny Annual Parish Service Day We invite all SJA Parishioners to get involved in our third Annual Parish Service Day on Saturday, November 17! Flyers are available in the Gathering Area. Register online by October 29. October 14th, 2018 Why are priests transferred from one parish to another? How is that decided? Priests joke a lot about how transfers are decided. Answers range from a huge dartboard in the chancery to pick a number and win a parish! But managing personnel, especially now when numbers shift and the average age increases, is no easy task. Priests are moved for any number of reasons. The priest himself might want a change, or he may be looking for a different type or place of ministry. Special needs in one place might require particular talents and abilities. Perhaps the priest has acquired enough experience that he can manage a larger assignment. Family concerns, illness, or personal issues might require a change as well. Interestingly enough, there are many ways that a diocese may approach the process. Some have open placement where a priest interviews for a position, or in the case of a pastor, looks the parish over and then makes his interest known to the bishop. Other places use a committee to make recommendations on transfers. Others might post openings and allow the priests themselves to reach an agreement. Like any other institution or business, moving personnel around is done to best suit the church and the priest. LPI Priesthood Sunday Catholics around the country will be celebrating Priesthood Sunday on October 28. It is a day to celebrate the importance of the gift of Priesthood in the life of our Church and a time to reflect with gratitude the blessing we have in our Pastor, Fr. Gary. A wonderful way to express our gratitude is by sharing a personal note or card of thanks. May our God continue to bless Fr. Gary in his ministry as Pastor of St. Joan of Arc Church! Sacrament Information Confirmation Our 2nd instructional session in preparation for Confirmation is Thursday, October 18, from 6:30-8:15pm in the Parish Hall. All Confirmation Candidates need to bring their red folders to each session. *If any candidate has not turned in their registration form, fee and Sponsor Commitment Form that were due on October 4, he/she needs to hand in these important items as soon as possible. 5 St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence. The St. Joan of Arc STREAM Academy had its first class on Friday, October 5. Depending on their choices, students in grades K-8 were placed in different STREAM classes. The school was a buzz with excitement as students began to explore making bath bombs, creating roller coasters, building with LEGOs, cooking with kitchen chemistry and various other classes. All faculty and staff were ALICE trained this past Friday. We all took part in a hands-on, in-person class. At the completion of the training, all faculty and staff left with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to be prepared in the case of an intruder or active shooter. Our October Dine and Donate will be October 17th at Burntwood. Burntwood will be giving us 15% back on any carryout or dine-in meals that day. Flyers were sent home with the students on Thursday. His possessions consumed him and blocked him from truly following God. Pope Francis repeatedly warns us against a throwaway society which discards people. Young adults resonate with his message. They don t want more things and money they want to make a difference in the world. Pray that the Holy Spirit grant them the wisdom and influence to do this! St. Pat s Hunger Center St. Joan, along with Holy Angels, will be cooking and serving meals on Tuesday, October 23. We will need cookies to serve with the dinner. Additional request forms can be found on the parish website, RCIA News The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process within parish life to welcome new members into the Church, to allow baptized Catholics to catch up with sacraments they may not have received yet and to lead every parishioner to deeper belief and renewal of their Catholic Christian Faith. Our process for the current year (October, 2018 May, 2019) has begun. We have had our first session and welcome three adults and one teen into this time of exploring our Faith, sharing our stories, growing in knowledge and love of the Lord and pursuing our life long journeys of Faith. We spent our first session getting to know one another by telling the parts of our stories that tell who we are and where we are on our individual journeys. We spent part of our second session completing the introductions and beginning to explore fundamentals of the Faith. It is not too late to enter into this process. If you have been considering approaching instruction in the Catholic Faith and the Church, please come to our next meeting on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 pm in the rectory basement meeting room.
