2 DATE & SUBJECT September 25, 2016 The Twenty-Sixth Sunday of Ordinary Time Let Lazarus be a warning to my brothers. (Luke 16:19-31) What does it take, to make a rich person care about the fate of a poor person? I can only speak for myself, being wealthy in the sense of having more education and more access to the good life than most of the world s people. Sometimes it takes guilt to get me to care, one of those tragic pictures of war-torn countries and suffering children. Sometimes it takes moral outrage, when I hear what government has done in my name. At times my faith will motivate me to do justice or act charitably, in a thoughtfully impersonal sense. But most of the time, a personal encounter with a suffering person will have the greatest impact on me. My heart is hardened in all the usual ways. I have learned not to care about most of what I see and hear in the news. Like many in this country, I am affected by compassion fatigue: the awareness of global suffering has led to the instinctive shutting down of natural concern. But Jesus will never ask us how we felt about poverty, only what we did about it. So whatever it takes to motivate you guilt, anger, faith, experience employ it for the sake of the kingdom. The only thing we cannot afford to feel is indifference. Application: Read your local diocesan paper or newsletter to find out how Catholics in your area are helping to relieve the burden of poverty locally. Consider ways that you, your family, or your parish can contribute to the effort. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S In the name of Christ, welcome to St. Joan of Arc Church. Please greet those around with a word of peace. CATHOLIC COMMUNICATIONS This weekend is the collection for Greetings of peace on this irst weekend of autumn. Saturday evening, September 24, was our Clambake, at which we had the drawing for our annual Parish Raf le. Many thanks to all who sold raf le tickets, worked on the Clambake, and to all who participated in these events. "A good time was had by all!" We are just over a month away from the November election. We have been bombarded with ads and partisan politics for the past year and more. Please note what the US Bishops have said: "We strongly urge all parishioners to register to vote, to become informed on key issues, and to vote." And further, "The Church does not support or oppose any particular candidate, but seeks to focus attention on the moral and human dimensions of issues. Moreover, we do not authorize the distribution of partisan political materials on parish property." In summary, as people of faith, let us allow our faith to in luence our thoughts and actions - including how we vote. As above, St. Joan of Arc does not permit lea leting of any kind nor placing lyers (or any other materials) on vehicles at any time. (Anyone who might do so is not acting in the name of the parish or with the authorization of our church or diocese.) Here are some words of wisdom that are quite inspirational, and I wanted to share them with you. I have been given this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something I have traded for it. I want it to be a gain, not a loss; good, not evil; success, not failure - in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for it today. You are in my heart and in my prayers. Blessings and Peace, Fr. Gary One more note: the priests of the diocese of Cleveland will gather for an extended convocation (meeting) from midday Tuesday October 4 until Friday October 7. As a result, I will be away from the parish, participating the convocation during that time. Please keep us in your prayers. Thank you. The Catholic Communications Campaign. Please use the envelope that is provided in this months packet. Academics. Excellence September is quickly coming to an end. We are at the mid-point of the first quarter of school. Students and teachers have their routines down, and we re moving steadily ahead. Our dedicated faculty and staff are working hard to provide a wide variety of learning activities in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. They create a learning environment that nurtures excellence and integrates the message of Jesus into every classroom. Where do you see Jesus? Our school theme this year is Take Jesus with you wherever you go. In the words of St. Theresa of Calcutta You are God s love in action. Through you, God is still loving the world. Each time people come into contact with us, they must become different and better people because of having met us. We must radiate love. As we look to create a loving and caring learning environment and to carry out our theme, the teachers and staff will be on the lookout for students who are being Jesus. When caught, students are given a Jesus sticker and are entered into a weekly drawing for the chance to take Jesus home with them for the weekend. Students are asked to take Jesus home and to journal about all the things they did with Jesus over the weekend! This student will be on morning announcements on Mondays to share their journal. This week s Jesus student was 3 rd grader, Sarah Koeser. Way to go, Sarah! Congratulations to the newly-elected St. Joan of Arc School Student Council officers: Sophia Gildone: President, Hadley Hairston: Vice President, Ava Nestor: Secretary. They were inducted into Student Council at the September 20 th Mass. Our 7 th and 8 th graders both now have their own school-issued ipad Airs that they can use at school and at home. These devices will enable the teachers and students endless opportunities to create hands-on, customizable learning experiences. We are excited about how these ipads will change what happens in class and excited to learn about how the students think about learning and how they organize their school work. As we begin to ease into our routines, I don t want to forget to say thank you to the parishioners of St. Joan of Arc. We are ever grateful for your support and encouragement. We are so happy to celebrate Mass with you on Tuesdays. Our students love to see parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles worship alongside of them. Thank you to the many parishioners who save Box Tops and Labels for Education and who support us through donations to fundraisers, and so many other ways. We are ever blessed to have you in our lives! It is so nice to see the parents of our school children at mass on Tuesdays. Remember, masses are every Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. and, as the song says all are welcome. Have a blessed and peace filled week!
