2 DATE & SUBJECT September 4, 2016 The Twenty-Third Sunday of Ordinary Time You began to build what you could not finish. (Luke 14:25-33) On the other side of town stands a blue house elevated on mammoth jacks. Evidently someone decided to undertake a huge project: to move this house to another location, or to rebuild the foundation for greater structural support. Underneath the house, however, tall weeds have grown, and small bushes are becoming trees. That house has sat on those jacks for a long time. Every time I walk down that street, I find myself smiling in sympathy. Somebody ran out of money, or momentum. That happens to me, too. I have projects piled here and there in my house, and promises I did not keep piled up in the recesses of my heart. In the same way it is easy for us to get baptized, or to take communion, and not follow through on the obligations we have assumed with those actions. Often, our Christianity sits up on jacks, while minor injustices grow into major ones all around us. Our discipleship cannot be just another project we mean to get to, later. If that house sits up there too long, it is all going to come tumbling down. Application: Begin this week to work on the big picture. Repair a broken friendship. Clean out a closet; clear out the clutter of unnecessary activities. Decide what is important and focus your energy on building the kingdom. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S Welcome to worship this Labor Day weekend. 3 Greetings of Peace. Pastor s Column This is Labor Day weekend. For many, this is the last hurrah before fall, vacations come to an end, and life is back in full-swing! And since we are in September, the parish daily mass on Tuesday will be at 9:00 am beginning September 6. Mass on Tuesdays will continue at 9:00 am through the school year. For questions, please contact Karen at PARISH NEWS CALLING ALTAR SERVERS Boys and Girls in grades (and even in high school) are invited to be trained as Altar Servers at St. After Labor Day, the parish office will be open most weekdays until 7:00 pm. On Fridays, the office will continue to close at 4:30 pm The office will remain closed on Saturdays throughout the year (as we have been closed on Saturdays in the summer) The parish office is closed on Sundays Since the office is closed on weekends (both Saturday and Sunday), please plan accordingly especially if someone might need a key or might have to do some parish business. Thank you. Thank you for purchasing and selling the tickets for our Parish Raffle the main fundraiser for our parish. This year the proceeds will go in our parish Organ Fund. The grand prize for the raffle is $25,000. The drawing will take at our Clam Bake on Saturday evening, September 24. You cannot win without a ticket! (Please make your reservations for the Clam Bake, too!) I received a memo from the Diocese and Bishop Lennon mentioning that if anyone would like to make a donation to assist those who are in need because of the severe flooding in Louisiana, we will have a basket in the Gathering Area the weekend of September The funds will support humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA and will help provide support to the Catholic Dioceses also impacted. Thank you. Finally, here is some more Humor for your Soul. One day, God was looking down at earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. So he sent his angels to see what was happening. When the angels returned, they told God, Yes, it is bad on earth; 95% of the people are misbehaving and only 5% are good. God was not pleased! So he decided to send an to the 5% to continue to serve as an example for the others and to encourage them to keep being good. Do you know what the said? Just wondering if you received it; since I didn't get that , either! Have a great holiday weekend and an even better week! Blessings & Peace, Fr. Gary Joan of Arc. New Servers should come to one of the following training dates: Wed, Sept. 28 from 3:15 to 4:30 pm or Thursday, Oct. 6 from 3:45 to 5:00 pm. Parents are welcome to addend. TO DATE: ONLY 293 TICKETS HAVE BEEN SOLD FOR THE ANNUAL FUNDRAISER St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence It is hard to believe that the warm, wonderful days of summer have passed so quickly and are beginning to blend into the warm, wonderful days of a new school year. We know this coming year will bring many new and wonderful experiences to us, and we welcome those experiences. Our Back to School Picnic was a testament to the excitement surrounding this new school year. We thank our PTO for sponsoring this gathering, and we look forward to many more. Our theme for the school year is Take Jesus with you wherever you go. If you take Jesus wherever you go, you will have love, and you will be deeply aware of Christ's presence, promises and power. Jesus walks with us every moment of every day. Trying to shine on our own can be exhausting. Instead, we re simply called to be closely connected to God and remain in Him. When we do, Jesus light pours forth through us in powerful, brilliant ways that change the world. The ways we shine might not make the news, but they make even more of a difference than we can see. This will be the focus of our school theme this year. The teachers attended several in services to help them gear up for another year of study and activity. The teachers teamed up with the teachers from several other Catholic schools to hear Rick Wormeli who was one of the irst Nationally Board Certified teachers in United States. He brings innovation, energy, validity and high standards to both his presentations, and his instructional practice, which includes almost 30 years teaching math, science, English, physical education, health, and history and coaching teachers. Teachers walked away with many great ideas that they will be implementing in their classrooms this year. They also attended a back to school spiritual retreat. We launched our annual magazine drive on August 29. Please help support our school by ordering or renewing magazines from our students. Using the internet is the preferred method of placing orders. Over 100 titles are available online in the digital format for tablets and smart phones. Go to and follow the prompts. John Fellenstein from Akron University will be here on September 9th and 16 th to do a presentation with grades 5 to 8. He will talk to them about Polymers and also the Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors. He will also do a hands on experiment with the students. In preparation for Mr. Fellenstein s visit, Ms. Bondra and Mr. Moore, our middle school science teachers, will teach our students about Polymers and conduct a hands on STEM experiment. I am confident that the coming year will be filled with rich and rewarding experiences. We pray that we continue to become a family of God, living in peace and harmony with each other bringing Jesus with us wherever we go.
