2 Has the movie, The Passion of the Christ, had the impact that many people had predicted? When Mel Gibson announced his film, there was a great reaction both positive and negative. Some thought this film would produce all kinds of negative effects, including antisemitic feelings that would blame Jews for the death of Christ. Others thought it would be the film of all films, converting people to faith in Christ. Churches reserved theaters and handed out free tickets as part of a community outreach. There was a great deal of interestand moneygenerated by the film. Many people were deeply moved by the film, and quite a number said that it made a big difference in their observance of Lent. However, although it can be, conversion is not usually a oneshot deal. It takes sustained effort, attention, and reflection for people to put faith first. They must keep in mind the presence of God in their life, seek to do his will, and choose grace over sin, good over evil, others over self. It is a turning towards God and a turning away from sinstep by step, choice by choice. That kind of conversion takes more than a great film! 3 From the Pastor Greetings of Lenten Peace! Next weekend Bishop Nelson J. Perez will be here at St Joan of Arc to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with our 8th graders to be confirmed. Please join with me in praying for our candidates and if you encounter any of them, let them know you are praying for them and are proud of them! Amen. We are just over 1/3 of the way through our Lenten journey. How are we doing with our Lenten promises? Perhaps the following thoughts from William Arthur Ward (an American author, teacher and pastor, ) might be helpful. He writes about Keeping a Holy Lent. Ward suggests we can: Fast from judging others; Feast on the Christ dwelling in them. Fast from words that pollute; Feast on phrases that purify. Fast from discontent; Feast on gratitude. Fast from anger; Feast on patience. Fast from pessimism; Feast on optimism. Fast from worry; Feast on divine order. Fast from complaining; Feast on appreciation. Fast from negatives; Feast on affirmatives. Fast from hostility; Feast on nonresistance. Fast from bitterness; Feast on forgiveness. Fast from selfconcern; Feast on compassion for others. Fast from personal anxiety; Feast on eternal truth. Fast from discouragements; Feast on hope. Fast from lethargy; Feast on enthusiasm. Fast from thoughts that weaken; Feast on promises that inspire. Fast from sorrow; Feast on serenity. Fast from idle gossip; Feast on purposeful silence. Fast from problems that overwhelm; Feast on prayer that strengthens I hope these thoughts are helpful for our Lenten journey. I know a few of them speak to me. For those who would like to participate in a Lenten Communal Penance Service, feel free to come to St. Rita on Wednesday evening March 7 at 7:00 pm. I will be there with Fr. Burchell, Fr. John Mullee, and other priests to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance. We can pray with and for each other as we together share in God s loving forgiveness. Blessings and Peace, Fr. The sponsor/candidate practice for Confirmation is Saturday, March 10, from 9:1511:00am in SJA Church. *All candidates and sponsors are to go directly to the Parish Hall to line up. A seating plan for both sponsors/candidates will be on the doors that lead into the Parish Hall. The celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation is Sunday, March 11, at 2:00pm in SJA Church, with Bishop Nelson Perez, Bishop of Cleveland, presiding. As a parish community we pray for our candidates, sponsors, parents, and guardians, asking the Holy Spirit to fill them with an abundance of His peace and grace!

4 Baptismal Class All new and expectant parents who have never attended a baptismal preparation program are required to do so before the baptism of their child. PSR Lenten Project The CRS Rice Bowl is the Lenten Project of Catholic Relief Services, the official international agency of the Catholic Community in the United States. Your prayers, fasting, and contributions support CRS s work with the poorest of the poor in 100 countries! Thank you for your support and generosity for this wonderful project! Mark the Dates: SJA VBC Shipwrecked Rescued by Jesus Our SJA Vacation Bible Camp will be the week of June 1822, We promise that it will be a week of fun, adventure, and learning as the children discover how Jesus rescues them when life gets tough! We invite children 4 years old through 4 th grade and our Adventure Crew, Grades 56 to attend. We welcome teens in Grades 78 to volunteer as aides and teens in Grades 812 to volunteer as Crew Leaders. Registration Forms are coming soon! Sponsor a Family Project Recently I received a special thank you from Sara Shininger, the Community Support/ Volunteer for the Geauga County Job and Family Services. Our St. Joan of Arc Day School and PSR have participated in an Advent/ Christmas Project these past 3 years to donate clothing, food, gift cards and toys to those in need in Geauga County through the Sponsor a Family Program. Sara shared with me some of the many thank you letters she received from the families who have benefitted. Quoting one of the parents, you will see how much these families appreciate your goodness and generosity: My kids have learned that in life, giving to others is such a gift. But to receive gifts, and letting others give to you, you learn a life lesson of receiving and that lesson you will never forget. It s difficult to let happen, but so worth it. Later in their lives, they will look back and peel back another level of gratitude for what you gave and offered to our family. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for creating a Christmas for them, that I could never give. HS Night: Winter Olympics Sunday, March 4, 6:308pm, Gym HS teens, join us for a pizza dinner, candy from around the world, YM s Olympic Games and a discussion tying it back to scripture. (Wear comfortable shoes!) Prayers for the 7/8 YM Kalahari Retreatants This weekend, a group of 12 teens went on a 24hour retreat at the Kalahari Indoor Waterpark in Sandusky, OH. In addition to our fun at the waterpark, we reflected on the scriptures of Peter walking on water and Jesus call to be fishers of men as well as the Blessed Virgin Mary s Miracle at Lourdes and appearance to St. Bernadette Soubirous. Please pray for our retreatants, that they continue to reflect on their retreat experience and allow the Holy Spirit to work in them to continue becoming disciples of Jesus. Anyone wishing to remember loved ones (living and/or deceased) on Easter may do so by either using the envelope provided in the monthly packet, or by picking up an envelope from the table in the Gathering Area marked Flower Donations. Place finished envelopes in the collection basket during Mass, or you may mail them to the Parish Office. Please print the remembrance information clearly. Thank you! 5 St. Joan of Arc Catholic School News By Mrs. Shelley DiBacco, School Principal Faith. Academics. Excellence St. Joan of Arc School is currently engaged in the OCSAA Accreditation Process. The purpose of the Ohio Catholic Schools Accrediting Association is to strengthen Catholic school identity and mission and to engage Catholic schools in the ongoing improvement of student learning. Every school in the Diocese of Cleveland must go through this process every five years. As part of the process, we were asked to examine our school mission statement. The St. Joan of Arc School faculty and staff spent a great deal of time reviewing the current mission statement. Working collaboratively, the faculty and staff followed a process of review, discussion, and consensus to develop a new mission statement. Since there are currently only two people on staff who were here when the current mission statement was created, we felt it was extremely important to develop a new mission statement that was reflective of our current faculty and staff. I m happy to share St. Joan of Arc Catholic School s new mission statement with you: St. Joan of Arc Catholic School is dedicated to instill within each student a life long desire to learn, lead, and live the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As we continue to go through this process I will update you on our progress. As we continue our Lenten journey we will pray more, sacrifice, and give to those in need. Each Friday afternoon we gather in church at 12:20 p.m. to meditate on the Stations of the Cross. Each week a different grade presents the Stations in a different way. Please join us if you can! We will end Lent with a Retreat Day on Holy Thursday. Kindergarten registration in now open. If you have a child five years of age or turning five before September 30, 2018, you may register your child for Kindergarten. If you would like to schedule a time to tour our school and observe Kindergarten, please contact the School Office at to schedule an appointment. The EdChoice Scholarship is available to any Kindergartner who turned five years old prior to January 1, 2018, and if the family income level falls within the Federal Poverty Guidelines. This scholarship is also available to students entering 1 st 5 th grades in Fall This scholarship amount is $4, for elementary students who qualify and is renewable through 12th Grade. Jesus clearly believed in what He was doing! The gospel tells us that because of this, many believed in His name because they saw the signs that He was showing them. If we expect our children to learn our values and beliefs, then they must witness our passion for these values. Just like the people in today s gospel, our children need to see the signs of what we re doing if they are to believe. Children need us to be passionate leaders.
