2 DATE & SUBJECT December 11, 2016 Third Sunday of Advent What did you go out to see? (Matthew 11:2-11) Our expectations dramatically affect what we experience. Depressed people tend to gather evidence that life is not working. Angry people collect grievances. The self-righteous hunt for the sins of others. We re all looking for something, and we generally find it. John in prison is reevaluating his claims about Jesus. He has prophetic expectations that he is unsure have been met. Jesus quotes him some Scripture as reassurance. But then Jesus directs the same concern to the crowds. What were you looking for in John? The message or the messenger? Because if you think it all ends with John, you will never guess that it begins with Me. John announced the end of an age, the axe laid at the roots of some very old ways of being and thinking. Jesus announces the coming of a new age in which the humblest member would be greater than John. We have to believe that John in prison would be grinning to hear that. He was quire prepared to decrease for such an increase. As the weak gain power and a voice in our culture, the strong tremble. Who are the weak in your circles? When they gain power, will they perpetuate injustice? How are you practicing, patience during the holiday crush to get it all done? What do you expect to happen this Advent, and how does this expectation affect your experience of this season? Application: The kingdom is coming! Everybody has a share in the harvest, but also a share in the sowing. What are you doing to make the kingdom a reality for others? Choose one seed to plant gentleness, forgiveness, gladness and tend it patiently in prayer and practice. (Reprinted with permission for God s Word Is Alive 23rd Publication 1998) WELCOME TO ST. JOAN S When we suffer doubt, we re in good company; even John the Baptist questioned whether Jesus was the Messiah (Matthew 11:2-3_. Lord, help us see your work before our very eyes. 3 From the Pastor Greetings of Peace as we enter this Third week of Advent. This week we will have our annual Advent Communal Penance Service. It is a shared penance service and will be at Holy Angels (with St. Joan of Arc) on Wednesday evening December 14 at 7:00 pm. (St. Joan will host the shared Lenten Penance Service with Holy Angels this coming year during the Season of Lent.) Feel free to take advantage of this opportunity to heed the call of John the Baptist to Repent and Prepare the Way for the Lord. Next weekend (December 17-18) we will take up a Second Collection to support the senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests (numbering nearly 33,000 across the USA) who have offered their lives in service to the church. Your gift to the Retirement for Religious fund helps provide nursing care, medications, and other necessities to those who have given a lifetime! This Retirement for Religious is one great way to show our support for those who have given so much of their lives in service to the church. Thank you for your generosity. Here is a follow-up to Grateful Giving! Re lecting on our recently completed Grateful Giving Effort at St. Joan of Arc, it is clear to see that our parish is truly blessed. We are working together to create and sustain a community of belonging, where each individual s dignity and self-respect is strengthened by the solidarity of our shared faith, the respect and affection we have for one another, and our mutual dedication to our God-given mission. With God s help we will continue to grow in discipleship. The willingness of our members to enter into sacri icial giving of time, talent, generous service, and treasure in response to our Grateful Giving Program speaks of our continuing gratitude for God s gifts. May God continue to bless us as we share in His work! Blessings and Peace. You are in my heart and in my prayers. Fr. Gary Clara Jean Cingel, daughter of Jim and Kristy. Excellence This third week of Advent, we light the candle of hope, the second purple candle of peace and now also light the pink candle of joy that symbolizes the joy we feel as the birth of Christ draws near. As a school community we continue our faith journey during the Advent season with daily Advent prayers and scripture readings on our morning broadcast and weekly Advent prayer services each Monday morning as we light our classroom Advent wreathes. Last Saturday over 150 adults and children attended our St. Joan of Arc Breakfast with Santa. Fun was had by ALL. The funds raised will benefit the educational programs at our school. A HUGE thank you to our PTO officers, special chairmen, committee members, and volunteers for their hard work and personal time given to the Santa Shop and Santa Brunch. On Tuesday, December 6 th, St. Joan of Arc School participated in Hour of Code, a nationwide movement designed to help introduce students to computer science and computer programming. We were fortunate to welcome eight employees from ProgressBook, a Brecksville Ohio company and developer of school administration software, who led our students through coding activities. ProgressBook team members were also on hand to answer any questions students had about programming, computer science jobs or the industry in general. The entire student body participated in Hour of Code, so be sure to ask your students what they learned. Our Advent theme this year is The Gift is Among Us!
