2 St. Mary Catholic Church Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord FATHER COREY S EPISTLE A very happy and blessed Easter to you all! I pray that after a good Lenten preparation, you may enjoy a spiritual renewal of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. The glory of the Resurrection does not end with Easter but is a new way of life that we as Christians enjoy every day. Jesus is Risen and the world has changed, been renewed, has been offered forgiveness of our sins, the hope of new and eternal life forever with God. I pray that all of us experience the Risen Christ in our lives always but especially during those times when the Good Fridays of our lives seem to overwhelm us. Most of us have the blessing of being cradle Catholics, that is, Catholic from birth. There are others who make the journey as teenagers or adults to Jesus by a special call on the pathway of life. The journey is called the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults or the RCIA. By the promptings of the Holy Spirit and an open heart, 12 people in our Parish have said yes to God s call in their lives. It is courageous for people to open their hearts to the Lord in today s world and as a result have given each of us an example to follow and to admire. For almost 8 months these folks have been in prayer, study and self examination to grow closer to the Lord. Today I have included their short biographies so that you can keep them in prayer and welcome them into the Body of Christ, the families of believers, our Church home. Here are those who we welcome with God s blessings: Zach Britton I decided to join RCIA after a few experiences this past year. I was raised in the Catholic faith and baptized at St. Mary s. I am currently in RCIA to learn more about the faith and to be Confirmed, as well as strengthen my relationship with the Lord. I ve enjoyed this class and have never left without learning something new. I am excited to learn and continue my journey in the faith, as each and every day is a learning experience. David Daluz St. Mary s has always been a special place for my family and I. Recently, after completing a construction project at the church, I realized I wanted to really be a part of the parish and understand my faith better. This summer I began the RCIA program where I have learned a lot from my instructors and peers. Since I started classes, my life has been more positive overall. Sunday s are now something I look forward to. This summer I will be making my Confirmation! Phillipe Daluz I have been going to St. Mary s with my family for as long as I can remember. My brother and I decided to get our sacraments, joining this RCIA program. I ve learned more about religion in these past 6 months than I have in my whole life. I m very thankful for the Fathers and Dan for everything. Madison Gilmore I live in Bethel Connecticut. I'm 17 years old and I go to Bethel High school. I have 4 sisters, including a twin sister and an older brother. I enjoy reading, painting and spending time with my family and friends. The RCIA group is refreshing because it brings together all different people who want to strengthen their faith. Being older and making my confirmation later I am able to retain and understand the things we are learning so much better. Morgan Gilmore I am 17 years old and I live in Bethel Connecticut. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church April 16, 2017 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE sister Madison. I also have three other sisters and one brother. My hobbies include singing, spending time with my friends and family, and listening to music. I really enjoy our RCIA group because by being the youngest in the class I am constantly learning from the other members of the group. Michael Kaptein I have lived in Bethel my entire life. My family owns a deli in Danbury which is where I met, and proposed to, my fiancé Chelsie. I work for EnviroConsultants & Recyclers in Danbury, while also coaching wrestling at Bethel High School. After our engagement, Chelsie and I began talking about the importance of our faith and its impact on our lives, and the lives of our future children. Once I made my decision to convert to Catholicism, my fiancé and I met with Father Corey. Any doubts or insecurities I had were gone due to his encouraging words. The Saint Mary s community has been so welcoming, and I have been blessed with immeasurable amounts of guidance and understanding throughout this process. Peter Nielson I m a self employed carpenter who lives in Bethel with my wife Mary. I was married at St. Mary's Church in Bethel 15 years ago, and I have attended mass on a regular basis. I decided to convert to Catholicism with guidance from Deacon John. I have enjoyed my RCIA class and look forward to receiving the Sacraments. Steve Oldham I am 65 years old and have lived in Bethel since My wife Joan and I have been married for 38 years, have 4 children and 4 grandchildren (more on the way)! I will be receiving all of my Sacraments at the Easter Vigil. I am very excited to be joining St. Mary's Church it's been a long time coming. Thank you to all my RCIA classmates for their inspiring discussions and for their sincere fellowship (and for the coffee and donuts!). My special thanks to Father Wolfe and to Dan Guido. Throughout the years, I have been coming to St Mary's. I am happy and excited to be receiving Confirmation alongside my son. We have waited a very long time for this moment. 4 Divine Mercy Sunday was declared by St. Pope John Paul II in the year 2000 to be celebrated on the Second Sunday of Easter each year. The celebration is based upon the words of Jesus, who appeared several times to a Polish nun (now declared a saint) named Faustina Kowalska. He spoke to her about His love and mercy for all persons. In several of His messages to St. Faustina, Jesus described His desire for a special day dedicated to His Mercy. Pope Francis is encouraging the faithful to know the face of God's mercy Jesus Christ Incarnate and to show that face of mercy to the world through our words and actions. 6 On Easter Sunday, there will be no Saint Mary's Youth events on 4/16. The Senior Youth will meet on 4/23 after the 5:30 mass. Eighth graders are welcome to start attending Senior Youth meetings once they are confirmed. The first meeting after reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is 4/30 - please join us as we welcome you as fully initiated members of the Catholic Church! Never be afraid of where the Lord leads you. When I discerned out of seminary last May, God made it crystal clear that I made the correct decision, but I was curious as to where He was leading me. Amidst a broad and deep job search, Fr. Corey reached out and offered me an opportunity I couldn t refuse: a chance to return to Saint Mary s, where I had been assigned as a seminarian, to assist in various aspects of the parish life. In essence, I was welcomed to a home where I could patiently readjust to life after seminary. My time here has been filled with innumerable blessings, including some challenges and shortcomings which have simultaneously humbled and strengthened me. I have witnessed the hope-filled presence of the youth in our parish - a tight-knit community of faith which extends to their homes, schools, and activities. I had the privilege of assisting Fr. Wolfe as we developed a plan to create new educational opportunities for adults that further deepen their understanding of the Truths by which we live. And last, but certainly not least, I was given the great gift of walking with one catechumen and eleven candidates as they prepared for full initiation into the Catholic Church. Each one of these ministries has left a definitive mark on my life, and I thank God every day for the people I have served and encountered along the way. Due to a series of unexpected, exciting, and providential events, God has made it clear once again that He s leading me in another direction. As a result, I have recently accepted a position at a parish in Houston, Texas, and will be moving a few days after Easter. This was not an easy decision to make, as I have truly enjoyed my time here at Saint Mary s and it is difficult to leave my friends and family in Connecticut, but I trust God in His ways. Thank you for adopting me as one of your own, and for making me feel like a valued member of the community since day one. Please pray for me as I embark on the next leg of my journey, and be assured of my prayers in return. This Easter, the Lord desperately desires to breathe new life in each of us. Heed the words of Jesus in the Easter Gospel: nolite timere, be not afraid. Our life with Christ is rarely painless, straightforward, or predictable, but it is always fulfilling. 7 AROUND THE DIOCESE DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY Religious freedom is more than freedom of worship. It goes beyond protecting our ability to attend Mass or a religious service.
