2 St. Mary Catholic Church FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Sunday, 12/11 Monday, 12/12 Tuesday, 12/13 Wednesday, 12/14 3rd Sunday of Advent Asta Smith, our oldest parishioner, passed away peacefully at her home November 10, 2016 at the age of 105. Asta was born on August 30, 1911 to John and Anna Hafner in Cleveland Ohio. Asta was a model in New York City. She left modeling to raise a family in Pleasantville, NY and worked at Westchester Medical Center as a medical record keeper for 25 years. Asta was predeceased by her son Daniel L. Smith; her grandson Tim Smith; her sisters Muriel and Dorothy; and son in law Alfred V. Battista. She is survived by her daughter Ann H. Battista and her three grandsons Alfred Jr., Daniel and Michael. Please keep her family in your prayers. The following are reflections on her remarkable life from the point of view of her grandson, Chip: My grandmother was an extraordinary woman. Being born in 1911, she had witnessed so much in her life. When I would ask her what the greatest invention in her lifetime was, she would tell me the indoor toilet. I would say, Come on, Grandma, wasn t the lightbulb, or electric heat or AC in the house better than toilet. She would be laughing and say, No, because then I did not have to go outside. She always loved to tell that to people once they found out how old she was. It put a big smile on her face. My grandmother, being a single woman, had to work hard to take care of her children. There was nothing that she would not do for her family. At the age of 70 she would leave her work, which she loved, to raise her grandchild, Timmy. She would move to Bethel to be closer to her daughter and be with her other grandchildren so that they all could be together as one big family. I don t think there was a day where my grandmother wasn t talking to my mother. She would always be there for us when we needed her the most. My grandmother put all her faith in God. She was a devoted Catholic. She loved Jesus and throughout all of our family crises, losing Timmy, her son Danny, and son in law Al, she did not lose her faith. She might not have understood why those things happened, but her faith was never shaken. I would tell her my feelings and share my thoughts and she would say, Chippy, you can t worry, and you just have to put your trust in Jesus. He knows what is best for us. That we are not meant for this world and it s not the end but only the beginning. My grandmother always enjoyed the company of people. She would always be telling me how nice everyone was and how lucky she was. She had nothing but nice things to stay about them. Sometimes I would wonder if she enjoyed the company of others more than her own family. I know she especially enjoyed the company of the priests that would come and see her throughout the years. She would say how wonderful they were and make sure I would pass on the message that she was thinking of them and not to be a stranger. I think if it was up to her, she wouldn t let them leave. I know that when she was not doing well, I would have one of the Fathers come over and she seem to always snap out of her condition. My family is truly blessed to have had her in our lives. I know I ll always have the image of her sitting in her chair with a glass of wine while working on some sort of project with her yarn, making something to give to somebody. She had a big heart and she loved help in any way that she could. She got a big kick out of spoiling us with her love. She will be truly missed but I know she is happy and she is sweet talking Jesus and spending time with Blessed Mother and thanking all the angels and saints that have helped her in her lifetime. And she finally is being reunited with all her love ones. I know she is looking down on us all and putting in a good word for all of us. I know she won t be truly happy until we are all with her again. When the ties of affection and authority that bound Europe's Catholics unraveled in the sixteenth century, many cultures lost time honored customs of faith. Some customs proved to be especially difficult for the reformers to wrest away from the people, especially those celebrated in the home. This week in Sweden, a country where the Catholic Church was disestablished four hundred years ago, a Catholic martyr from Sicily is the most beloved figure. St. Lucia, Lucy, is celebrated on December 13. The long story short is that Lucy was a Christian whose father wanted to marry her off to a pagan fellow, and she rejected her father's authority. To make an example of her, her father had her killed. In the course of the brutal martyrdom, Lucy lost her beautiful eyes, but her vision was miraculously restored. The candles worn today by the eldest daughter of the family are tokens of the fire that refused to harm the saint. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church December 11, 2016 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE winter. Before the reform of the Gregorian calendar in the sixteenth century, December 13 was the winter solstice. Today, young girls appear in the morning wearing lighted candles on their crowned heads (battery operated now after many mishaps), and serve sweet rolls and coffee to everyone in the house. Traditionally, this would be saffron bread, but other sweet breads can be substituted. Below is a recipe for these rolls. For the Swedes, who are not churchgoers, the "Lucias" are the official heralds of the holiday season and a sign of everyone's yearning for more light in this world. Europe once abounded with customs like this; the survival of this custom in Scandinavia is a sign of God's grace, and how fertile the soil is to receive the true message of Advent. Ingredients: SWEET ROLL DIRECTIONS Rolls: 2 tsp sugar; 1/2 cup warm water; 1 tsp saffron powder; 8 cups strong plain flour (all purpose flour); 4 tsp salt; 1/2 cup butter; 3/4 cup castor (table) sugar; 1/4 cup raisins; 1 tsp ground cardamom; 1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk; beaten egg for brushing Topping: 1 tbsp chopped almonds; 1 tbsp coarsely crushed cube sugar 1. Dissolve sugar in the warm water and add yeast. 2. Mix the saffron powder with 1 tbsp hot water. 3. Leave about 20 minutes, until frothy. 4. Sift flour and salt and rub in the butter. Add castor sugar, cardamom and raisins. 5. Mix to a dough with the yeast mixture and milk and add saffron. 6. Knead thoroughly, return to bowl, cover and allow to rise until doubled in bulk. 7. Shape into small buns, put on a greased baking tray until doubled in size. Brush with beaten egg, sprinkle with coarse sugar and almonds. 8. Bake in oven at 400 degrees for minutes or until golden brown. 9. Cool on a cooling tray. 10. Serve fresh with coffee. Did St. Francis of Assisi invent the Christmas crib? Not exactly, but his devotion to the Incarnation and his love for the poverty of the Christ Child certainly popularized this beloved custom. Long before Francis, it was a custom at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome to enshrine a rich image of Mary, gilded and bejeweled, embracing the child Jesus. This church was founded as a kind of home for the feast of Christmas in the fourth century. In 1223, Francis was ready to celebrate this feast in a new way. In the tiny city of Greccio, he asked friends to prepare a place where they could experience the poverty and suffering embraced by Christ in his birth. It was a living scene: an ox from the barn, an ass from the stable, and peasants standing in for shepherds and kings. The night of the celebration was beautiful, the weather was warm, and people came in crowds, bearing candles and singing hymns that echoed through the forest. Francis himself chanted the Gospel and preached. The custom spread quickly, and by the sixteenth century cribs were seasonal features not only in church, but in the home. On December 17, the liturgy begins to unfold the Lord's birth before us, and it's the right time to follow this beautiful tradition. In Germany, each night throughout Advent children prepare a bedding for the manger. At bedtime prayer, a child places a single straw in the manger for each act of devotion or virtue performed during the day. If the children are good, then the Christ child will have plenty of soft bedding when he is placed in the manger on Christmas. 4 Today, December 11, we will be celebrating the Roman tradition of BLESSING OF THE BAMBELLINI, the little or big statues of the Baby Jesus that are placed in our home Nativity scenes. We invite all parishioners to bring their Baby Jesus statues and they will be blessed at every Mass today. ST. MARY CHRISTMAS GIVING PROGRAM Once again our parish wis collect gifts, gift cards and monetary donations to help Bethel area families during this Christmas season. The requests of those in need in our area are written on the paper straws in the manger in the vestibule of the Church. After purchasing the gifts, please bring them back wrapped for delivery and place the gift around the manger. The envelopes should be placed in the marked box. The deadline is today, December 11th, and the gifts cannot be given to the intended if received after that.
