2 St. Mary Catholic Church May 13, 2018 > Take a moment to look at the Parish Hall. Folks have been telling me that there needs to be a new floor in there. About a month ago I was walking in there and tripped over one of the many tiles that were coming up. So, I agreed that we needed a new floor. The floor was put in last week by Premiere Flooring Systems. They were the lowest of three bids and the company is most reputable. The material is called Mohawk Hot and Heavy Free Lay Vinyl Flooring. (That s their name, not mine). It has self-leveling Underlayment. Both the kitchen and the Parish Hall were done. The cost for them to rip up the old flooring, create flat smooth concrete sub-flooring, install new vinyl tile and new wall base was $17, I think that the old floor served us well and the new floor will last for at least another 25 years. > Why is May Mary s month? Here s a brief explanation. For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honor Mary, Mother of God. Not just a day in May, mind you, but the entire month. The custom spans both centuries and cultures, with roots going back as far as the Ancient Greeks. In early Greece, May was dedicated to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. FATHER COREY S EPISTLE In Ancient Rome, May was dedicated to Flora, the goddess of blooms, or blossoms. They celebrated ludi florals, or floral games, at the end of April and asked the intercession of Flora for all that blooms. In medieval times, similar customs abounded, all centering around the practice of expelling winter, as May 1 was considered the start of new growth. During this period, the tradition of Tricesimum, or Thirty-Day Devotion to Mary, came into being. Also called, Lady Month, the event was held from August 15-September 14 and is still observed in some areas. The idea of a month dedicated specifically to Mary can be traced back to baroque times. Although it wasn t always held during May, Mary Month included thirty daily spiritual exercises honoring Mary. It was in this era that Mary s Month and May were combined, making May the Month of Mary with special devotions organized on each day throughout the month. This custom became especially widespread during the nineteenth century and remains in practice until today. The ways Mary is honored in May is as varied as the people who honor her. It s common for parishes have a daily recitation of the Rosary during May, and many erect a special May altar with a statue or picture of Mary as a reminder of Mary s month. Additionally, it s a long-standing tradition to crown the statue of Mary during May a custom known as May Crowning. Often, the crown is made of beautiful blossoms representing Mary s beauty and virtue. It s also a reminder to the faithful to strive to imitate our Blessed Mother s virtue in our own lives. May Crowning, in some areas, is a huge celebration and is usually done outside of Mass, although Mass may be celebrated before or after the actual crowning. But May altars and crownings aren t just church things. We can and should be doing the same in our homes. When we echo the customs and traditions of the Church in our homes our domestic churches we participate more fully in the life of the Church. If you haven t already, I encourage you to erect a prayer corner in your home. No matter how fancy or simple it is. The main point is that it s a place designated for God, and more specifically, for spending time with Him. Just as you need proper atmosphere to sleep, you also need proper atmosphere to pray. For May, give Mary a special spot in your prayer corner. It can be a statue or picture, but place there some representation of our Blessed Mother. Make it appealing and a real tribute to her beauty and virtue. Then, crown Mary. You can give her an actual or spiritual crown and you can make it a subtle gesture or ornate ceremony of your own device. The meaning is far more important than the action. You can do it in the beginning, at the end of May or anywhere in between. Just do it. Why? Not because it s a long-standing tradition in the Church, although it is. Not because there are any special graces connected to it, although there are. No, do it because Mary is Mother your mother, my mother, everyone s mother and because she cares for all of us day-in-and-day-out without fail, interceding for us in even the tiniest matters. For that, she deserves an entire month in her honor. Pray the Rosary during the Month of May.If you don t know, here is how The origin of the Rosary dates back to the year 800, but it has Sunday, 5/13 Monday, 5/14 Tuesday, 5/15 Wednesday, 5/16 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am & 5:30pm Masses 9:30am RCIA 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 7:00pm May Devotions 8:15pm Knights of Columbus 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 6:30pm Confirmation Penance 7:00pm Women of Faith 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 6:00pm Carnival 7:00pm Prayer Service 7:00pm Cursillo

3 St. Mary Catholic Church evolved throughout the centuries resulting in the Rosary that we know today. The Rosary invites us to make a beautiful meditation about the life of Jesus and the Holy Virgin Mary. Whether we pray it alone or with others, we can offer our Rosary for many intentions, always asking the intercession of Our Lady. The Rosary, as we know it today, was given by the Virgin Mary herself to Saint Dominic of Guzman in the year She handed it over to him in order to fight the heretics and sinners of the times, and she also asked him to teach people how to pray it and spread this devotion throughout the world. Spreading the devotion to the Holy Rosary is still a responsibility of all Catholics. Ever since those times, Christians pray the Rosary along with meditation on 15 mysteries about the life of Our Lord Jesus and the Virgin Mary. In 2002, Saint Pope John Paul II introduced five additional mysteries: the Luminous Mysteries. So, currently, we meditate on 20 mysteries. FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Seventh Sunday of Easter Step-By-Step Instructions for Praying the Rosary 1. Begin by holding the crucifix, saying "In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit," (making the sign of the Cross while doing that), then say the Apostles Creed. 2. On the single bead just above the cross, pray the "Our Father." This and all prayers of the rosary are meditative prayers. 3. The next cluster has 3 beads. The "Hail Mary" prayer is said on these three beads. You pray the 3 Hail Marys while meditating on the three divine virtues of faith, hope, and love/charity. 4. On the chain or cord after the three beads, say the "Glory Be..." 5. On the next bead, which is a single bead, you announce the first divine mystery of contemplation. For example, if it were a Monday, you would say the first Joyful Mystery is "The Annunciation", at this point you pray the "Our Father" prayer. 6. Now this will bring you to the first decade or set of 10 beads of the Rosary. You will then pray 10 Hail Marys while contemplating the first mystery, example: The Annunciation. 7. After the 10th Hail Mary you will have completed the first of 5 decades which make up a Chaplet of the Rosary. You now come to another single bead, at this point, you pray the... Glory Be to the Father... then (on the same bead) pray the O My Jesus... then (on the same bead) announce the next or second mystery. For example: if its Monday and your praying the Joyful Mysteries, the second Joyful Mystery is The Visitation. At this point you pray the Our Father You will now come to the second decade or group of 10 beads, you will now pray the 10 Hail Marys while contemplating the appropriate mystery. 9. You continue to pray the rosary the same way throughout. If your intention is to pray a Chaplet (a single set of mysteries) at the end of the fifth mystery you will come back to the joiner, this is where the decades all join with Thursday, 5/17 Friday, 5/18 Saturday, 5/19 Sunday, 5/20 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 6:00pm Carnival 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 6:00pm Carnival 8:00am Mass 8:30am Men s Ministry 12:00n Carnival 5:30pm Mass 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am & 5:30pm Masses 9:30am RCIA 12:00n-2pm Carnival 4pm-8pm Carnival

4 the lower part of the rosary which contains the cross. When you come to the joiner, you decide whether or not you wish to say another Chaplet or end. If you decide to say another Chaplet you simply announce the next mystery and continue. If you wish to end, you simply say the Glory Be To The Father, the O My Jesus, the Our Father and end the rosary with the Hail Holy Queen and the Sign of the Cross... THE OUR FATHER Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. THE DOXOLOGY (or Glory Be) Glory be to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. (this prayer is optional and may be said after all Glory Be to the Fathers...) O MY JESUS, have mercy on us. Forgive us our sins. Save us from the fires of hell. Take all souls into heaven, especially, those most in need of thy mercy. Amen. THE HAIL MARY Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. DECADE PRAYER (Prayer for Priests): God, our Father, please send us holy priests, all for the sacred and eucharistic heart of Jesus, all for the sorrowful and immaculate heart of Mary, in union with saint Joseph. Amen. THE SALVE REGINA (Hail Holy Queen): Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! V: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. LET US PRAY O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal salvation. Grant, we beseech Thee, that while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through Christ our Lord. 5 A MOTHER S DAY PRAYER Dear God, we pray for young mothers, who give life and count toes and tend to our every need; May they be blessed with patience and tenderness to care for their families and themselves with great joy. We pray for our own mothers who have nurtured and cared for us; May they continue to guide us in strong and gentle ways. We remember mothers who are separated from their children because of war, poverty, or conflict; May they feel the loving embrace of our God who wipes every tear away. We pray for women who are not mothers but still love and shape us with motherly care and compassion. We remember mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers who are no longer with us but who live forever in our memory and nourish us with their love. Amen.
