These classes are offered on the first Sunday of each month. Anyone requesting a Sponsorship form must be a currently registered and practicing Catholic, and they must attend one of the New Baptism Classes to receive it. There is a 3 month waiting period for a sponsorship form for the newly registered. 2 St. Mary Catholic Church 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time FATHER COREY S EPISTLE As you may guess, with the closing of the Diocese of Bridgeport Synod last year, a great deal of information was gathered and shared throughout the Diocese. The implementation of the Synod s Discoveries is now underway throughout the Diocese in Parishes, Schools and other ministries. A couple of weeks ago, I shared with you in the bulletin our self assessment. I believe we are a healthy, vibrant, spirit filled community that is generous in our time, treasure and talent not only to our own Parish but, throughout our community and far beyond. Of course we need growth as does any living creature. If we stay stagnant we die. The Diocese has asked us to focus on two or so issues putting together a multi year plan on how to go forward, improve and grow. Our committee, the Parish Pastoral Council, the Finance Council, Synod Representatives and clergy have found it necessary for our Parish to expand Evangelization (the proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ) and Youth Ministry. Using the words of St. Pope John XXIII, we are looking at the signs of the times and are beginning to use social media to reach as many people as possible, both Catholic and non Catholic alike. We have put together a new Parish Website and are currently ironing out any bugs to make it more user friendly and to offer the most amount of information possible. Our Facebook page has been completely revamped. New Parish information, Catechetical links and daily inspirational material are offered and we soon will launch our new Parish Twitter account. Our Youth Group has a Facebook page and a Twitter account that has great news for our young people and Parish. In order to offer instant information we are going to install to monitors/tv s for the vestibule of the Church. With the software we have obtained we shall be able to offer information, schedules, photos and videos for you to see when entering or exiting the Church. We have learned from Bishop Frank Caggiano and his initiatives with communication to enliven people s understanding of the Church and to build on what we have done in the past. During October, the month dedicated to Our Lady of the Rosary, we shall pray the Rosary and Litany every Monday night at 7pm. Recently the chief exorcist of Rome passed away. He always asked if peopled prayed the Rosary each day as a remedy and safeguard against the devil and all evil. Even if you do not come to the Monday night Rosary in October, please pray your Rosary every day. They saw him approaching, wearing a surgical mask a standard precaution in aseptic environments such as the one the Pope was entering. Just days after the canonization of Mother Teresa, who did so much to safeguard and promote life, this afternoon Pope Francis paid his customary Mercy Friday visit to a structure which shares this very same mission. The Pope s first visit was to the emergency and neonatal intensive care units at the San Giovanni hospital in Rome, where there are currently 12 children with a range of neonatal conditions being treated. Five of the children (two of them twins) are in critical condition and have been intubated in intensive care. On the top floor of the unit there is a nursery where other children are hospitalized. There were a lot of surprised faces as the Pope made his unexpected entry. Startled staff welcomed the Pope who had to wear a surgical mask just like everyone else, taking all the necessary hygiene precautions required in aseptic environments. Francis stopped at each incubator, personally greeting the parents present, comforting and encouraging them, a statement issued by the Vatican Press Office informs. The Pope then went on to visit the Hospice Hope Villa where 30 terminally ill patients are hospitalized. The structure belongs to the Gemelli Foundation of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Via della Pineta Sacchetti in Rome. Upon his arrival, the Pope who asked to greet each of the patients in their respective rooms was welcomed by the hospital s heads. The Pope s visit was a huge surprise for patients and relatives alike, who were moved to tears by his presence, great big smiles lighting up their faces. This Mercy Friday, the Pope wanted to give a strong sign of the importance of life, from its first instant to its natural end. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church September 25, 2016 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE acceptance of life and the guarantee of human dignity in all stages of development is repeatedly stressed in Pope Francis teaching. With this dual visit, he has given concrete and tangible confirmation of how fundamental it is as part of our works of mercy to show attention to those in the most vulnerable and precarious of situations. The Latin word sacramentum means a sign of the sacred. The seven sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Christians. They are special occasions for experiencing God s saving presence. That s what theologians mean when they say that sacraments are at the same time signs and instruments of God s grace. If you learn more about the sacraments, you can celebrate them more fully. Baptism: For Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is the Church s way of celebrating and enacting the embrace of God. Eucharist: Catholics believe the Eucharist, or Communion, is both a sacrifice and a meal. We believe in the real presence of Jesus, who died for our sins. As we receive Christ s Body and Blood, we also are nourished spiritually and brought closer to God. Reconciliation: The Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (also known as Penance, or Penance and Reconciliation) has three elements: conversion, confession and celebration. In it we find God s unconditional forgiveness; as a result we are called to forgive others. Confirmation: Confirmation is a Catholic Sacrament of mature Christian commitment and a deepening of baptismal gifts. It is one of the three Sacraments of Initiation for Catholics. It is most often associated with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Marriage: For Catholics, the Sacrament of Marriage, or Holy Matrimony, is a public sign that one gives oneself totally to this other person. It is also a public statement about God: the loving union of husband and wife speaks of family values and also God s values. Holy Orders: In the Sacrament of Holy Orders, or Ordination, the priest being ordained vows to lead other Catholics by bringing them the sacraments (especially the Eucharist), by proclaiming the Gospel, and by providing other means to holiness. Anointing of the Sick: The Catholic Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, formerly known as Last Rites or Extreme Unction, is a ritual of healing appropriate not only for physical but also for mental and spiritual sickness. Mother Teresa once said, Keep the corners of your mouth turned up. Speak in a low, persuasive tone. Listen; be teachable. Laugh at good stories and learn to tell them. An old priest was dying. He sent a message to the parish banker and lawyer, to come to his home. When they arrived, they were ushered up to his bedroom. As they entered the room, the priest held out his hands and motioned for them to sit on each side of the bed. The priest grasped their hands, sighed contentedly, smiled, and stared at the ceiling. For a time, no one said anything. Both the banker and lawyer were touched and flattered that the preacher would ask them to be with him during his final moments. They were also puzzled; the priest had never given them any indication that he particularly liked either of them. They both remembered his many long, uncomfortable homilies about greed, covetousness, and avaricious behavior which made them squirm in their seats. Finally, the banker said, Father, why did you ask us to come? The old priest mustered up his strength and then said weakly, Jesus died between two thieves, and that s how I want to go. A big, burly man visited with a priest at the rectory. This priest was well known for his charitable impulses. Father, he said in a broken voice, I wish to draw your attention to the terrible plight of a poor family in this parish. The father is dead, the mother is too ill to work, and the nine children are starving. They are about to be kicked out and turned into the cold, empty streets unless someone pays their rent, which amounts to $400. How terrible! exclaimed the priest. May I ask who you are? The sympathetic visitor applied his handkerchief to his eyes. I m the landlord, he sobbed.
