2 St. Mary Catholic Church 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Thank you to all who donated to this year s Annual Catholic Appeal. We have met our goal of $160,000. All of the gifts, both large and small helped us to help those in need in Fairfield County. Together, we have helped those that we could not help as a lone Parish. When you see seminarians in our Diocese, please know that you have participated in preparing men for the priesthood, you have help to provide spiritual counseling to those who could not afford it, you have helped maintain our retired priests, you have helped to spread Catholic education both Catholic Schools as well as Parish Religious Education, you have helped our Youth Group among many other ministries. Thank you for your generosity. In my continuous series on religious orders, today I share the following: Capuchins, like all other Franciscans, try to live a Gospel life based on the vision and example of St. Francis of Assisi. From the beginning of the Franciscan movement in the 13th century, however, the friars have not always agreed as to what shape that life should take. The Capuchins were founded in the 16th century as an attempt to recapture the contemplative vision of Francis and to share the fruits of that contemplation with the poor and the other forgotten members of our society. Perhaps more than any other Franciscan group, the Capuchins aim to be contemplatives in action that is, to see God s presence in every part of our world and then to work toward making sure that the light of Christ is not obscured by ignorance, poverty, or injustice. Capuchins are able to do this work through an incredible diversity of ministries and opportunities that empower the people they serve to be the best persons they can be. They are friars, which simply means brothers. Like those in monastic life, we live in community and pray in common; unlike monks, we are not cloistered and are not attached to one particular community for the rest of our lives. A saying attributed to St. Francis articulates this beautifully: The world is my cloister; my body is my cell; my soul is the hermit within. Many Capuchin friars feel called to serve God s people as an ordained priest, while many others feel that they can contribute to the sanctification of the Church as a lay brother. Both engage in all kinds of ministry and both are equally valuable and equally valid examples of the universal call to holiness. By reason of the same vocation, the brothers are equal. For this reason, let us be called brothers without distinction. When those persons who have entered religious take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, they are publicly proclaiming, before God and the Church, that they will live no longer for themselves alone they will also live for God and for others. Religious consecrate themselves to God and to the Church through the evangelical counsels, which are the ideals given by Jesus to those who would be his disciples, that is, to those who would lead lives in imitation Jesus. The vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience allow us to be faithful disciples and to witness to the Gospel life within the particular form of life we have chosen. The vows can easily seem to restrict what you can and can t do, but they actually do away with whatever keeps you from being the person God wants me to be in other words, they set you free. Because you are not bound by personal financial concerns, by exclusive relationships, or by your own will, you can be available to all people and you can offer your life for others. The habit is a sign of our poverty, minority, and fraternity, and of our consecration to God and to the order. It identifies us as followers of St. Francis and indeed was modeled on the clothing typically worn by the poor in St. Francis time. The habit consists of a tunic (a plain brown robe with a hood), a cord fastened around the waist, and sandals (although most friars wear shoes instead of sandals). A friar receives the habit at the beginning of his novitiate year. A friar is not required to wear the habit but the great majority of friars do so every day, at their ministries and in their community. In their free time, the friars typically do not wear the habit, but they are still living the Franciscan life as much when they are in habit as when they are wearing regular clothing. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church August 20, 2017 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE The Community of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal (abbreviated as "C.F.R.") is a religious institute in the Latin Church of the Catholic Church. It follows the Capuchin Franciscan tradition. Originally formed as a mendicant congregation, it has served as an official institution of the Vatican since The congregation was founded in 1987 by eight Capuchin priest friars, including Benedict Groeschel, Stan Fortuna, Robert Stanion, Glenn Sudano, Bob Lombardo, and Andrew Apostoli. The purpose of the community is to strive to a return to the authentic Capuchin way of life and the renewal of the Catholic Church. In addition, the friars are known for their fidelity to the pope. The Community characterizes itself as Catholic, Franciscan, Capuchin, contemplative, prophetic, apostolic, fraternal and pro life. Sudano told a reporter about the motive behind forming the community "We were concerned about the effects of secularism on religious life [among the Capuchins] and a lack of clear and explicit fidelity to the Church. That secularism is less prevalent today, thank God, but was very much the case in the 1970s and 80s. What we were observing then were not so much sins of commission, but omission. A pastor, for example, [might] not speak out against the Holy Father, but neither would he speak in support of him. He [wouldn't] condemn adoration of the Blessed Sacrament or the Rosary, but he [wouldn't] promote them either. We worried that many of the traditional expressions of the Faith were not appreciated or practiced." Sudano said that it was their feeling that "Because of this secularism, men weren't attracted to life in religious communities.... [Potential candidates] wanted to participate in the traditional forms of religious life, and wanted traditional signs, such as wearing the habit." Initially it had not been their desire to break away from the Capuchins. Sudano related, "We recognized that things were not going well. Our desire was to stay in the Capuchin community, but to be a renewal community. We wanted to bring back adoration and traditional devotions and practices, such as wearing the habit. Our superior in Rome was interested in our idea, but the provincials in the United States were not. We were allowed to begin in New York, but after three years of fraternal discussions, it was clear that our order was not interested in our style. So, we decided to continue our work under the archbishop of New York. Leaving our community was not easy. We didn t leave our confreres because we thought they were evil, but because we had a difference of opinion. Some of our confreres were upset with us, but leaving was something that had to be done." The Franciscan Friars of the Renewal always operate in harmony with the local bishop and serve according to the needs of each diocese. Their website states that the mission is twofold: First "...is to serve the materially poor, most especially the destitute and homeless. Friaries not primarily focused on formation should have one or more facilities to provide for the needs of the poor, for example, a shelter, soup kitchen, food pantry and/or clothing room. Each of these works must be directed by a friar to preserve the Catholic and Franciscan character. Every member of the community is to be personally and directly involved in hands on work with the poor. All service to the poor is given completely free of charge." Second is evangelization "...through preaching and teaching the Holy Gospel, and by sharing the rich treasures of our Catholic faith with all. This can take many forms so that every friar may assist in his own way. Some expressions of this apostolate are: providing missionary centers for the poor, street evangelization, parish missions, retreats, days of recollection, pilgrimages, spiritual direction, pastoral counselling, religious education and sacramental ministry." The friars wear a grey religious habit with a hood, a cord, and sandals. Beards are also characteristic for members of the congregation. The rope worn as a belt around the waist symbolizes being girded with Christ and is tied in the three characteristic Thursday, 8/24 Friday, 8/25 Saturday, 8/26 Sunday, 8/27 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass Youth Group Trip to Brownstone Park 8:00am Mass 4:00pm Confessions 5:30pm Mass 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am and 5:30pm Masses

4 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Franciscan knots which signify the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience which are taken upon becoming a member of the community. Those interested in becoming members of the community go through various stages: postulancy lasting ten months, followed by a year long novitiate after which simple vows are taken. The newly professed members then spend a year or more living in one of the friaries. Final vows (life time) are not made until a person has been a member of the community for at least five years. Those who feel called to the ministerial priesthood pursue their studies at St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers; during this time, the students live in a nearby friary Speaking of Franciscan Capuchins, Barney Casey became one of Detroit s best known priests even though he was not allowed to preach formally or to hear confessions! Barney came from a large family in Oak Grove, Wisconsin. At the age of 21, and after he had worked as a logger, a hospital orderly, a streetcar operator, and a prison guard, he entered St. Francis Seminary in Milwaukee where he found the studies difficult. He left there and, in 1896, joined the Capuchins in Detroit, taking the name Solanus. His studies for the priesthood were again arduous. On July 24, 1904, he was ordained, but because his knowledge of theology was judged to be weak, Solanus was not given permission to hear confessions or to preach. A Franciscan Capuchin who knew him well said this annoying restriction brought forth in him a greatness and a holiness that might never have been realized in any other way. During his 14 years as porter and sacristan in Yonkers, New York, the people there recognized him as a fine speaker. For, though he was forbidden to deliver doctrinal sermons, writes his biographer, James Derum, he could give inspirational talks, or feverinos, as the Capuchins termed them. His spiritual fire deeply impressed his listeners. Fr. Solanus served at parishes in Manhattan and Harlem before returning to Detroit, where he was porter and sacristan for 20 years at St. Bonaventure Monastery. Every Wednesday afternoon he conducted well attended services for the sick. A coworker estimates that on the average day 150 to 200 people came to see Fr. Solanus in the front office. Most of them came to receive his blessing; 40 to 50 came for consultation. Many people considered him instrumental in cures and other blessings they received. Father Solanus sense of God s providence inspired many of his visitors. Blessed be God in all his designs was one of his favorite expressions. The many friends of Father Solanus helped the Capuchins begin a soup kitchen during the Depression. Capuchins are still feeding the hungry there today. In 1946, in failing health, he was transferred to the Capuchin novitiate in Huntington, Indiana, where he lived until 1956 when he was hospitalized in Detroit. He died on July 31, An estimated 20,000 people passed by his coffin before his burial in St. Bonaventure Church in Detroit. At the funeral Mass, the provincial Father Gerald said: His was a life of service and love for people like me and you. When he was not himself sick, he nevertheless suffered with and for you that were sick. When he was not physically hungry, he hungered with people like you. He had a divine love for people. He loved people for what he could do for them and for God, through them. In 1960, a Father Solanus Guild was formed in Detroit to aid Capuchin seminarians. By 1967, the guild had 5,000 members many of them grateful recipients of his practical advice and his comforting assurance that God would not abandon them in their trials. He was declared Venerable in Like us on Facebook at StMaryChurchBethel and follow us on

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY According to USCCB President Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, The Catholic Church teaches that religious freedom has to do with immunity from coercion. Immunity from government coercion is a right that all citizens in this country should enjoy. So, in asking for an exemption to the HHS mandate to fully accommodate deeply held moral and religious beliefs, the USCCB is asking that the government give us the space to fully participate in American life. Let us pray that efforts to change the health care bill protect our First Amendment rights.
