These classes are offered on the first Sunday of each month. Anyone requesting a Sponsorship form must be a currently registered and practicing Catholic, and they must attend one of the New Baptism Classes to receive it. There is a 3-month waiting period for a sponsorship form for the newly registered. 2 St. Mary Catholic Church Fifth Sunday of Lent FATHER COREY S EPISTLE It has been the custom of the Roman Church, at least in modern times (we mean from the 17th Century forward), to veil the crosses and the images of the saints from the 5th Sunday of Lent until Easter. This has been, and ought to continue to be, one of the defining characteristics of the season of Passiontide a season which, if after the postconciliar liturgical reforms lost in name, need not be lost in spirit. Still in many churches throughout the West, crosses and statues are veiled now and will remain veiled for two full weeks. The Catholic Encyclopedia describes this custom as follows: Before Vespers of Saturday preceding Passion Sunday [i.e. the 5th Sunday of Lent] the crosses, statues, and pictures of our Lord and of the saints on the altar and throughout the church, with the sole exception of the crosses and pictures of the Way of the Cross, are to be covered with a violet veil, not translucent, nor in any way ornamented. The crosses remain covered until after the solemn denudation of the principal crucifix on Good Friday. The statues and pictures retain their covering, no matter what feast may occur, until the Gloria in Excelsis of Holy Saturday. However, it is noted that the statue of St. Joseph may remain uncovered, if outside the sanctuary, during the month of March, which is dedicated to his honor. As Christ hid himself from the rage of the Jewish authorities (John 8:59), so now he is hidden from the world in preparation for the mysteries of his passion. The presentiment of that awful hour [of our Savior s passion] leads the afflicted mother [the Church] to veil the image of her Jesus: the cross is hidden from the eyes of the faithful. The statues of the saints, too, are covered; for it is but just that, if the glory of the Master be eclipsed, the servant should not appear. The tradition is often practiced during the last two weeks before Easter, starting on Passion Sunday (the Sunday prior to Palm Sunday) and ending on Good Friday. This time period was originally called Passiontide. Even though it is no longer called by this name as often, the tradition is still practiced in many places. Then, as in a dramatic unveiling, the images are again revealed to mark the end of the penitential season and the beginning of the joy of the Easter season and the hope that the Resurrection brings. It is a beautiful custom that teaches us about the meaning of the liturgical seasons. In covering the cross and other religious images during the height of Lent, attention is centered on the Passion and death of Christ. This is why the only images NOT to be covered are the Stations of the Cross. Hot cross buns are traditionally baked for lent, the 40 days before Easter. In the Christian tradition they start on Ash Wednesday, the day after Fat Tuesday. Their greatest day is Good Friday as they are served to commemorate Christ's suffering on the cross. However, the bun acquired mythical properties during the centuries, generally now forgotten. Early literature reveals that the hot cross bun was better known as the Good Friday Bun. Pepys referred to it in his diaries of 1666, and Boswell included it in his Diary for Good Friday in The most famous story says the hot cross buns origins date to the 12th century when an Anglican monk was sent to have placed the sign of the cross on the buns to honor Good Friday. Throughout history, the bun has received credit for special virtues, among them that of ensuring friendship between two people sharing a bun. An old rhyme states, "half for you and half for me, between us two good luck shall be". Another tradition holds that a Good Friday bun should be kept hanging from the kitchen ceiling for one year to another to ward off evil spirits. Healing properties were also attributed to it. Gratings from a preserved bun were mixed with water to provide a cure for the common cold. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church March 13, 2016 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Here is another idea for a non-meat meal: Pizza Soup submitted by Ruth Ingredients: 1 Tb. olive or vegetable oil; 1 medium onion, sliced; 1 large green bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces; 1 large red bell pepper, cut into 1-inch pieces; 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped; 2 cups water; 2 cans (14oz. each) diced tomatoes in olive oil, garlic and spices, undrained; 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste; 1 cup sliced mushrooms (3 oz); 1 ts. Italian seasoning; 1 can (15 to 16 oz) kidney beans, rinsed and drained; 1 can (15 to 16 oz) white beans, rinsed and drained; 6 slices french bread, each 1 in. thick; 1 cups shredded mozzarella cheese Directions: Heat oil in pan over medium heat. Cook onion, bell peppers and garlic in oil, stirring occasionally, until onion is tender. Stir in water, tomatoes, and tomato paste until blended. Stir in remaining ingredients except bread and cheese. Heat to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Just before serving, heat oven to 425. Place bread on ungreased cookie sheet. Toast bread in oven about 6 min., turning over once until golden brown. 10 tips for making the Lenten Season more meaningful: 1. Slow Down - Set aside 10 minutes a day for silent prayer or meditation. It will revitalize your body and your spirit. 2. Read a good book - You could choose the life of a saint, a spiritual how-to, an inspirational book or one of the pope's new books. 3. Be kind - Go out of your way to do something nice for someone else every day. 4. Get involved - Attend a Lenten lecture or spiritual program. 5. Volunteer at your parish - Whether cleaning the church or helping with the food drive, it will give you a chance to help others. 6. Reach out - Invite an inactive Catholic to come with you to Mass. 7. Pray - Especially for people you don't like and for people who don't like you. 8. Tune out - Turn off the television and spend quality time talking with family members or friends. 9. Clean out closets - Donate gently used items. 10. Donate Google "Catholic Missions." Then pick one mission and decide how you can help by sending money, clothing or supplies. ST. MARY MEN S MINISTRY We will continue our 2 part talk with Marty Lynch about the Bible.
