2 St. Mary Catholic Church 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Congratulations to the winner of this years St. Augustine Award medal, Rose Schlemmer. Rose is an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion and one of the pillars of our Youth Group. Rose maintains a profile in the background, never bringing attention to herself and will do anything that is needed to do. Rose has a bright personality and a loving manner that shines in her job at St. Mary School and in all that she does for our Parish. The winners of the St. Augustine Award medal for St. Mary School are Ann and Bob Stosser. The Stossers have been a driving force in our School for as long as most of us can remember. Positive, generous, devoted, and kind are just some of the words that describe Ann and Bob and their dedication not only to St. Mary School but to the Parish as well. I am sure that Sr. Anne would whole heartedly support Mr. Viceroy s decision to present this award to the Stossers. To both Rose, Ann and Bob words cannot express adequately our thanks for all you do for our community. God bless you all! Please plan on attending our Parish Advent Mission the weekend of December 9/10 through Wednesday, December 13. Deacon Harold is literally known all over the world. We are so lucky to get him to speak here at St. Mary Parish. How to pray the Chaplet for the Dead The Chaplet for the Dead contains 45 beads. It begins with the Crucifix, 5 introductory beads and 4 sets of 10 beads (40 beads). This Chaplet has no medal. The 40 beads are in memory of the 40 hours which Our Lord is thought to have spent in Limbo. One begins and ends this devotion with the De Profundis or the Our Father & Hail Mary. De Profundis Out of the depths I call to you, Lord. O Lord, listen to my cry. Be attentive to the sound of my pleading. If you, Lord, note all our offences, who then, O Lord, could stand? But with you is forgiveness, for which we revere you. I wait for the Lord, my soul awaits; I hope in his word. My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen wait for dawn, more than watchmen awaiting the dawn. Israel, hope in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy and generous redemption. It is he who redeems Israel from all their sins. On the large beads is made the Act of Faith (O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine son became man, died for our sins, and that he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the holy Catholic Church teaches, because you who have revealed them, who can neither deceive nor be deceived); Act of Hope (O my God, relying on your almighty power and infinite mercy and promises, I hope to obtain pardon of my sins, the help of your grace, and life everlasting through the merits of Jesus Christ, my Lord and Redeemer); and Act of Charity (O my God! I love Thee, with my whole heart and soul, and above all things, because Thou art infinitely good and perfect and most worthy of all my love; and for Thy sake, I love my neighbor as myself. Mercifully grant, O my God! that having loved Thee on earth, I may love and enjoy Thee forever in heaven. Amen.) On each small bead, you say: "Sweet Heart of Mary, be my salvation." Each set of 10 beads is concluded with: "Eternal Rest Grant unto (him/her) and let the perpetual light shine upon (him/her). May (he/she) rest in peace." Conclude with: V. Eternal rest grant unto (him/her), O Lord. R. And let perpetual light shine upon (him/her). V. May (he/she) rest in peace. R. Amen. V. May (his/her) soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. R. Amen. May the love of God and the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ bless us and console us and gently wipe every tear from our eyes. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. R. Amen. Twitter account has reached more than 40 million subscribers. The Holy Father s Tweets are issued in nine languages about a third of the followers are English speakers. In addition, opened March 19, 2016 has nearly five million followers. Parents are responsible for the material well being of their children. Yet we know our children are spiritual beings as well. Here are five gifts you can give to nurture the spiritual life of your child: 1. Explain to your child why you gave him or her the name you did. In the Bible, names carry a lot of meaning. Jesus changed Simon s name to Peter (Greek for rock ), which indicated Peter s vocation as the leader of Christian community. By telling your child how you chose his or her name, you can highlight the spiritual hopes you have for your child and emphasize his or her connection to the larger community. 2. Tell stories about your ancestors. Explain, for example, how their grandparents or great great grandparents came to this country if they are of immigrant heritage. Such stories of the strength, perseverance, and faith of their forebears will help them know that they are part of a larger, grander story than just their own. 3. Share with your child who your favorite saint is and why. Describe how you receive inspiration from the example or teaching of this saint (or saintly person, whether canonized or not). Explain to your child the reason you are devoted to this saint and talk about other people whom you admire. 4. Offer a story about how your faith helped you in a difficult time in your life. Think back to a time when you made an important decision and, if you are comfortable, share how your faith shaped the decision. Set aside time to also talk about how your faith helps you on a daily basis. 5. Give your child your time and attention; listen to their hopes and dreams. The care and concern you express for your child provides a foundation upon which your child can accept God s love and the love of others. Every day you help to shape the attitude your child brings to prayer and worship. The loving attention you share with your child prepares him or her to encounter Jesus in the heart, in the Eucharist, and in other people. 4 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Do you have an altar in your home? Every Catholic home should have an altar, a place set with a crucifix, the family bible, a statue of Mary, Holy Water and any other items: statues of saints, pictures of loved ones, prayer intentions, rosary, family memories, flowers. The altar can be a place of prayer for individuals or the whole family especially in times of celebration or times of sadness. All Holy Cards of loved ones can be placed there to be remembered and prayed for especially on their birthdays or the day that they died. THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON FRI., NOVEMBER 10 FOR VETERAN DAY. November is dedicated to Departed Souls. The BOOK OF NAMES will be in the Sanctuary, to the right of the altar. Write the names of your departed loved ones, and we shall keep them in our prayers during November. Envelopes for All Souls Day may be returned any time during November. Masses are offered throughout the year for Souls in Purgatory. The WEDNESDAY NIGHT PRAYER SERVICE On Wednesday nights, join us for quiet prayer at 7:00pm in the Notre Dame Center Chapel for our own personal intentions and for the whole world. Our next meeting of the St. Mary MEN'S MINISTRY group will be on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 8:30am in the Parish Hall. Come share in the positive Christian fellowship and learn how you can better strengthen your personal faith journey. For more information, Craig DeFreese at acdefreese@snet.net or Eric Keener at stmarys06801@gmail.com. BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP provides a prayerful experience of mutual support and comfort for those who are confronting the loss of a loved one. Our next meeting will be on Sat., Nov. 11th from 10:30 noon in the Notre Dame Center. If you will be attending for the first time, please call the Rectory at to confirm. WOMEN OF FAITH Oh, Mary, my Queen, my Mother! What better way to show our devotion to Mary than participating in an evening devoted to designing and making a Rosary. Rosaries make beautiful gifts for our families and friends and even for ourselves. This event will be held on Tuesday, November 21st at 6:45/7:00. More details will follow. Just mark your calendars. MARK YOUR CALENDARS for our ADVENT PARISH MISSION from the weekend of December 9/10 through Wednesday, December 13 with Deacon Harold Burke Sivers. Deacon Harold, known worldwide as the "Dynamic Deacon," is one of the most sought after speakers in the Church today. He is a powerful and passionate evangelist and preacher, whose no nonsense approach to living and proclaiming the Catholic faith is sure to challenge and inspire those who hear him. He will be speaking at all the Masses on Dec. 9/10 and at 7pm on Mon. Wed. Don t miss this opportunity to deepen your faith during the Advent season! THE POPE S INTENTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER That Christians in Asia, bearing witness to the Gospel in word and deed, may promote dialogue, peace and mutual understanding, especially with those of other religions. 5 Religious Ed Office hours Mon., Tues., Wed., and Thurs. 9:30am- 2pm (203) REGISTRATION has begun for the School Year. You can download the Religious Education Registration forms from our website stmarybethel.org and return them to the Religious Ed office. ATTN: GRADE 2 PARENTS and those who missed the previously required Enrichment Session with Fr. Corey: At least one parent must attend this program on Falling in Love with Jesus Again on Monday, Nov. 6 at 7pm in the Church. Babysitting will be provided if needed. (Grade 2 parents session will be on November 6.) 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS EVE MASSES All of the 4th Sunday in Advent Masses (Dec. 24) will take place in the Gym with no 5:30pm Sunday Mass. The Masses for Christmas Eve (also on Dec. 24) will all be in the Church at 4pm, 6pm and 10pm. Christmas Day (Dec. 25) Masses will also be in the Church at 7am, 9am and 11am. The reason we are having the 4th Sunday in Advent masses in the Gym is that the Church needs to be decorated for Christmas and there would be no opportunity to do that if those Masses were in the Church. Our RCIA program meets Sundays after the 8:30am Mass. If you or someone you know is interested and has not reached out, please contact the Parish Office at The SISTERS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD will be here after all masses Nov. 11/12 with fine handcrafted items that they make through the year such as Advent wreaths, candles (baptismal, anniversaries, etc.), soaps, rosaries and chaplets, angels, frames, holiday décor, quilts, etc. The Sisters will also bring assorted home baked goods: squares, cookies, delicacies, muffins, etc. The Sisters are consecrated exclusively and primarily to God. Prayer was, is, and always will be the relevant and valuable way of expressing their deep concern for other people and for the profound sufferings of our world. However, they are not employed outside the monastery but are selfsupporting through the distribution of altar breads and their handcrafted items. Their work is done in conscious solidarity with all those who have to toil hard to earn their living. Like they did at their last sale a year ago, a percent of the sales profit will be given to their programs for the needy and for the refugees and children in the Congo and Kenya. The Sisters would like to thank Fr. Corey and the parish community for their support and generosity, and want to assure us of their grateful prayers for each and every one.

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY Last month, the Trump administration announced it would provide a broad religious and moral exemption to the HHS mandate. According to the USCCB, this is good news for all Americans. A government mandate that coerces people to make an impossible choice between obeying their consciences and obeying the call to serve the poor is harmful not only to Catholics but to the common good. Religious freedom is a fundamental right for all, so when it is threatened for some, it is threatened for all. The BETHEL WOMEN S CLUB GFWC is once again sponsoring a community drive, from October 27th to November 20th, to collect Christmas presents for the men and women in long term care who have bravely fought for our freedom. The items must be new, with original tags and packaging and unwrapped. A list of items can be found in the church vestibule by the collection bin. We are also supporting the Vet House and the Home for Heroes in Danbury, both of which are homes for local veterans, who were homeless. We ask these men to give us their specific requests, and therefore, we are gratefully accepting monetary donations to fulfill their needs. Checks may be made payable to the Bethel Women s Club GFWC and sent c/o Geier, 15 Andrews Street, Bethel, CT THANKSGIVING is only weeks away, and once again you have the opportunity to share with those less fortunate. You may drop off your food donations (canned or dry foods, etc.), in the Church vestibule every day from 8:00am 5:00pm. Frozen Turkeys can be dropped off Mon. Fri. mornings until 11:30am in the freezer in the Parish Hall Kitchen. Monetary donations may be sent to: Brotherhood in Action, P.O. Box 582, Bethel, Ct Please be as generous as you can as our food supplies are very low and demand is great! Dorothy Day s SANTA S WORKSHOP is looking for children s bikes to fix up and give away at the Workshop in December. If you have one call Mary Korin at to arrange a pick up. The St. Mary team at the DOROTHY DAY HOMELESS SHELTER in Danbury is in great need of a couple more men who would be willing to stay with the homeless at the shelter only about 6 times per year.
