2 St. Mary Catholic Church The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ FATHER COREY S EPISTLE We welcome Andrew LaFleur, our Seminarian for the summer! Here is his story from the Diocese of Bridgeport s Vocation page: Home City: Bridgeport; Home Parish: Saint Ann. I attribute my vocation mostly to my involvement in my home parish of St. Ann in Bridgeport. My family's home is located two houses away from the parish. I started feeling called to the priesthood around fourth grade. The good example of the parish priest was important in my discernment. I remember thinking I wanted to be like him, especially by attending Mass and serving Mass, and seeing how prayerful he was. Every time I would go to the church before Mass I would see him praying the Liturgy of the Hours before hearing confessions and celebrating the Mass. As I grew older my brother and I shared the responsibility of being Sacristan for the parish, which made me even more involved in the sacramental life of the parish and seeing more of what the priest is. From that young age the thought of the priesthood never left my mind, always stuck with me. As a priest of Jesus Christ, I want to be the one to deliver the saving sacraments to the people of the Church. My experience at St. John Fisher Seminary has been helpful in my serious and prayerful consideration of the priesthood. It has shown me how vital prayer is in figuring out your vocation and even more in the life of a priest. One thing I like a lot about the seminary is the fraternity. It's encouraging to be in a house with other men who are there for the same reason to discern and be formed for priesthood. What I am looking forward to most as a priest, God willing, is being the one who can be Christ for people, especially through the sacraments. Msgr. Peter P. Dora died on June 5 at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY. A Stamford native, he was born on April 29, 1941, the son of Paul and Rose Kmetz Dora. He attended K.T. Murphy Grammar School, St. Mary School and Stamford High School, and was prepared for the priesthood at St. Thomas Seminary, Bloomfield and St. Mary Seminary in Baltimore, Md. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Walter W. Curtis on May 20, 1967, at St. Augustine Cathedral, Bridgeport. Always interested in education, after ordination he served as faculty member and spiritual director of Notre Dame Girl s High School in Bridgeport (now Notre Dame High in Fairfield); St. Mary High School in Greenwich, now the home of Greenwich Catholic School; and at the former Christ the King Preparatory School in Southport. He was also spiritual director of the Diocesan College House of Studies, the predecessor of St. John Fisher Seminary. During his years in education, Msgr. Dora assisted at several parishes, including Holy Name of Jesus, Stratford; Christ the King, Trumbull; St. Gabriel, Stamford; St. Thomas Aquinas, Fairfield; and St. Michael the Archangel, Greenwich. In 1973, he was named director of religious education for the diocese. In 1976, Msgr. Dora took a sabbatical to pursue ecumenical studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and at the Woodstock Center at Georgetown University, and he later completed further studies at Fairfield University and at the Monastery of Taize, France. He was appointed director of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs in 1981, a position he held for 10 years. In 1984, he was named pastor of Saint Benedict Parish in Stamford. In 1990, he was appointed pastor of Holy Name of Jesus in Stratford, where he had started as a part time parochial vicar after his ordination. In 2003, he became the pastor of St. Theresa Parish, Trumbull, a position he held until 2006, when he took the post of chaplain at Stamford Hospital with residence at St. Clement Parish in Stamford. It s a joy to serve the people of God in the Diocese of Bridgeport, and to grow in faith and grace with the people in the various parishes where I have served, and will continue to serve, Msgr. Dora said at the time of his appointment to St. Theresa Parish. Msgr. Dora was also a diocesan consultor, president of the Board of Directors Catholic School System for Region VI, and was on the Clergy Personnel Committee and the Priests Council. He became Chaplain to His Holiness to Pope John Paul II in 1991, with the title of Monsignor. Msgr. Dora lived in retirement at Catherine Dennis Keefe Queen of the Clergy Residence in Stamford. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church June 18, 2017 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE was celebrated at St. Bridget Church, Stamford, at 11 am on Friday, June 9. Burial followed at St. John Cemetery. Msgr. Dora is mourned his older sister, Sister Patricia Dora, CSJ, of Hartford, his twin sister, Mary Rose Patten and her husband, Dwight, and by his nieces and nephews. The School Sisters of Notre Dame have ministered and served St. Mary Parish and School for over 50 years. I am sure that each Sister touched lives of her students and have brought the love of God and the love of learning to each of them. The Sisters have brought joy, faith, healing for over half a century. As a Parish, we miss not having the Sisters with us for they added an integral part of the Church by their witness and their lives. St. Mary Convent housed the Sisters for these many years but, the building is no longer a Convent for it does not house any religious women. I thought it was a good idea to rename the Convent and to expand the purpose of this hallowed building rooted in the past and looking to the future. As you know the French words Notre Dame means Our Lady. The Sisters are School Sisters of Our Lady. In honor of the Sisters lives and dedication we are going to name the Convent NOTRE DAME CENTER. (Our Lady Center). We shall never forget the Sisters service and the rededication will be a constant reminder of the great work and dedication of these religious women. So, on August 15th, the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady (the Patron of our Parish) we shall formally dedicate and bless the Convent after the 9:00am Mass. Right now, our School s after School program uses the Convent, the RCIA holds there classes there, the Bereavment Group utilizes the building, the Youth Minister uses an office and other meetings are also held in the Convent. We hope to do more work in the future so that the Parish may use this space for meetings and the like. I am asking anyone who remembers the names of the Sisters that served here at St. Mary to call the Parish Office with those names so that we can produce a roll call of names that will be posted in the building and as a result they will be forever remembered and prayed for as new generations use this building. Please make it a point to come to the 9:00am Mass on August 15th and the dedication after in honor of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. Pope Francis: Pius XII risked to save the Jews of Rome Protecting them was a work of mercy! the Pope says at Santa Marta. You must share, have mercy and run risks for others, not just do charityworks of mercy should not be a form of charity, a way to relieve conscience, but to share, have mercy and even run risks to help others. Like in Rome. During the war, there were those who risked, beginning with Pius XII, to hide the Jews. Pope Francis said in the morning Mass, June 5, 2017, at Casa Santa Marta, on the day the Church celebrates Saint Boniface Martyr. As reported by Vatican Radio The Pontiff took cue from the First Reading of the Book of Tobias: the Jews were deported to Assyria, and a just man, named Tobi, who supported his poor compatriots and who risked life to secretly bury Jews who were killed with impunity. It saddens Tobi to see the suffering of others. Pope Bergoglio starts from this situation to reflect on the 14 corporal and spiritual works of mercy. For the Bishop of Rome, performing them does not just mean sharing what one has, but also complying with, namely, suffering with the sufferers. The Pope emphasizes: A work of mercy is not a thing done to unload one s conscience: I ll do a work of good so I ll feel much better with myself, and take this burden away... No! It means also to feel sorry for the pain of others. Sharing and having mercy go together. Merciful is the one who knows how to share and to feel sorry for the problems of other people. A question, an examination of conscience follows: Do I know how to share? Am I generous? When I see a person who suffers, who is in trouble, do I suffer too? Can I put myself in somebody else s shoes? In a situation of suffering? Jews deported to Assyria are forbidden to bury their fellow countryperson: whoever dares to, risks to be killed; Tobi risks. Performing works of mercy Francis points out means sharing, pitying, and even risking: One risks many times. Think about Rome. During the war, Thursday, 6/22 Friday, 6/23 Saturday, 6/24 Sunday, 6/25 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 7:00pm Adult Choir 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 11:00am Blood Drive 8:00am Mass 4:00pm Confessions 5:30pm Mass 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am and 5:30pm Masses

4 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE many were those who risked, starting with Pius XII, to hide the Jews, so they were not killed, so that they would not be deported! They risked their lives! But it was a work of mercy to save those people s lives! To risk. Then the Pope focuses on two other elements. Those who do merciful actions can be mocked as it happens to Tobi because he is considered a person who does crazy things instead of being quiet and thinking about his business and comfort. Here is one who let s himself be bothered: To carry out works of mercy is uncomfortable. But I have a friend, a sick friend, I would like to visit her, but I do not want to really... I prefer to rest or watch TV... quiet. Performing works of mercy means to be bothered. Works of mercy bother. God Himself suffered discomfort for us: he went on the cross. To give us mercy. Who is able to do a work of mercy, he adds, is because he knows that he has been merciful before; The Lord gave mercy to him. And if we do these things, it is because the Lord has had pity on us. Francis finally exhorts to meditate on our sins, our mistakes, and how the Lord has forgiven us: He has forgiven us all, has had this mercy and so each one is called to behave the same way with our brothers and sisters. The works of mercy he concludes are those that relieve us from selfishness and make us imitate Jesus more closely. In case you wanted to know: 1. The Catholic hierarchy is headed by the Bishop of Rome, known as the Pope. The Catholic Church teaches that it is the one true Church founded by Jesus Christ, that its bishops are the successors of Christ's apostles and that the Pope is the sole successor to Saint Peter who has apostolic primacy. 2. The Catholic Church is the oldest institution in the western world. It can trace its history back almost 2000 years. 3. The Catholic Church s Vatican has diplomatic relations with almost every country in the world. 4. The Catholic Church is the largest single denomination in Christianity. 5. The Devil s Advocate or Advocate Diaboli, is a real position within the Catholic Church. 6. The Roman Catholic Church executed William Tyndale in 1536 for translating the Bible into English. He was not just executed: he was tried for heresy, choked, impaled, and burned on the stake. Roughly 83% of the New Testament in the King James Bible is Tyndale s translation. Additionally, roughly 76% of the Old Testament is his translation. 7. The crime rate in Vatican City is 133.6%, which means there are more annual offenses than there are people in the Vatican (about 500 people). Most of the crimes, though, are committed by visiting tourists. 8. While there is no definitive head count, based on history, the Roman martyrology, and Orthodox sources, scholars estimate that there are over 10,000 saints and beati ( blesses ones ). 9. A common Catholic symbol is the Sacred Heart, which is a heart shown pierced with a cross and crown of thorns that recall Christ s sacrifice. 10. A common Catholic symbol is ashes, which are ancient signs of penance. Catholics place ashes on their foreheads at the beginning of Lent as an outward sign of repentance. 11. Catholics believe that anyone can baptize in an emergency situation (such as a car wreck). Any person, Catholic or not, can pour the water and say the words. The only requirement is to follow the wishes of the person you are baptizing. 12. The Big Bang theory was proposed by a Catholic priest, Monsignor Georges Lemaitre. 13. A few months after Pope Formosus ( ) died, his cadaver was exhumed, dressed in papal vestments, put on trial for political disagreements, and judged to be unworthy of the papacy. His papal edicts were deemed invalid, the fingers he used to perform sacraments were cut off, and his body was tossed into the Tiber River. 14. John F. Kennedy was the only Catholic president in American history. 15. The Pope is protected by the Swiss Papal Guard. Wearing uniforms designed by Michelangelo and commonly armed with halberds, they are capable of using heavier weapons if needed. Each member is Catholic, male, and Swiss, and must complete military training in Switzerland. They must demonstrate good conduct and be at least five foot eight in height. Those who are chosen are granted a private audience with the pope along with their families. In extreme circumstances, they are expected to guard the Holy Father with their lives. The Swiss Papal Guard is the oldest active military unit in continual existence since 1506.The Pope is protected by the Swiss Papal Guard. Lori, asserted that religiousinstitutions such as parishes, schools, and charities can no longer pretend that these are ordinary times. They must be robust in their Catholic identity and missionary zeal. He says when parishes lose their evangelizing edge or schools and charities become too much like their secular counterparts, we run the risk of surrendering, bit by bit, our religious freedom. He advises us all to build bridges, reach out in friendship to those we disagree with, but in the process let us not forget or surrender who we are. That is why our parishes and all our institutions need to undergo what Pope Francis calls a missionary conversion. Let us pray that the revised health care mandate reinstates religious freedom.
