2 St. Mary Catholic Church October 7, 2018 WISDOM FROM FATHER WOLFE > The Holy Father, Pope Francis, this past Saturday has requested the faithful of the entire world to pray the Holy Rosary each day during the month of October. This month is a month dedicated to Mary, as is the month of May. He has asked this for the particular purpose of each member of the Church joining in communion and penitence together as the People of God so as to ask the Holy Mother of God and St. Michael the Archangel to protect the Church from the devil, who always seeks to separate us from God and from one another. The Pope has requested that each rosary said during this month conclude with two additional prayers: The Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel and the ancient Marian prayer Sub Tuum Praesidium (Beneath Your Protection). Prayer the Pope affirmed on September 11 is the weapon of the Church against the Great Accuser who prowls about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Only prayer, he says, can defeat him. The Russian mystics and the great saints of the Christian tradition advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence threatening the Church, to shelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God pronouncing the prayer Sub Tuum Praesidium, the text of which follows: Sub tuum praesidium confugimus Sancta Dei Genitrix. Nostras deprecations ne despicias in necessaitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo Gloriosa et Benedicta. We take refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. The Holy Father has requested this prayer to be said by the faithful on behalf of the Church that Mary might preserve her from the attacks of the devil, and at the same time make her more aware of the faults, the errors and the abuses committed in the present and in the past that evil may not prevail. The Sub Tuum Praesidium is a hymn to Mary dating back to at least the 4th century, and is particularly dear to the Eastern Liturgical Rites, from which the oldest text is to be found. In the Roman Rite it is preserved as an antiphon in Compline, or Night Prayer, of the Liturgy of the Hours. The term Praesidium (Pray- Sid-EE-Oom), is one of particular importance in the prayer. It reflects in the Latin language an assistance given in time of war by fresh troops in a strong and decisive manner. In praying this prayer, we are asking Mary not only to support us from afar, but like the cavalry that rushes in to turn the tide of battle, to actually step into our present struggle and lend her strength to thwart the advance of evil. In essence, this is a rallying cry of the Church for Mary to crush the head of the serpent once more in our present struggle. > The Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel is one that we are all familiar with, especially now that we are praying it at the conclusion of every Mass. But, where did this prayer come from? The answer is as surprising as the prayer is strong. In 1886 Pope Leo XIII instituted what would later become known to us as the Leonine Prayers. These prayers, said after the conclusion of Mass, consisted of the Hail Mary, the Hail Holy Queen, and a brief verse and response. Up until the Second Vatican Council these prayers would have been said daily after a Low Mass, meaning that some of us would have grown up hearing or even reciting these prayers along with the rest of our parish. After having instituted these prayers, something else began to happen. Pope Leo, after celebrating Mass one day in his private chapel with some cardinals, suddenly stood transfixed in front of the altar. Witnesses to the event claimed that his face drained of color and he was trembling. Worried for his health, the tried to snap him out of it, fearful that he might be having a heart attack or something similar. This lasted for some 10 minutes. After this, his color returned and with great emotion he cried, Oh, what a horrible picture I have been permitted to see! After this, he quickly removed his vestments, refusing to talk to anyone, and quickly shut himself up in his office. There he composed the prayer that we would know today as the St. Michael Prayer and, upon seeing the cardinals again, distributed it to them and began to urgently request that it be recited regularly by them and that they themselves would further distribute it among the faithful. The prayer would later be officially included in the Leonine Prayers and regularly be said after the conclusion of Mass. The Pope later confided in his priest secretary that he had had a vision that had chilled him to the bone. He said that he had witnessed a vision of demonic spirits, gathering and swarming around the city of Rome and the Vatican, pressing upon them to consume the Church. During this horrible vision the Pope stated that he had heard two voices - one dark and guttural, the Sunday, 10/7 Monday, 10/8 Tuesday, 10/9 Wednesday, 10/10 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am & 5:30pm Masses 9:30am RCIA 12:45pm Pre Baptism Class 2:00pm Blessing of the Animals 6:30pm Three6Teen St. Joe s Brookfield SMS Family Portrait Weekend 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 7:00pm October Devotions 7:30pm Knights of Columbus 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 7:00pm Prayer Service

3 St. Mary Catholic Church other strong and clear speaking as if in conversation with each other. He understood them to be the voices of the devil and of Christ. Satan: I can destroy your Church. Christ: Do you suppose you can? Go ahead and do so. Satan: To do so, I need more time and more power. Christ: How much time? How much Power? Satan: 75 to 100 years, and a greater power over those who will give themselves over to my service. Christ: You have the time and the power. Do with them what you will. The experience ended with a vision of St. Michael appearing in the midst of the horror and casting the devils and Satan into the deep abyss of Hell. This why St. Michael was particularly invoked in a unique prayer, as the chief defender of the Church who would deliver them from the present onslaught of evil. The experience of Pope Leo XIII is comparable to that of Job, who also was subject to temptations, torments, and trials at the hands of the devil, all with the intent of destroying his faith and proving to God that no man or woman truly loved or served Him with their whole heart. The trials were allowed that Job might be made even stronger in faith, God to be proven the stronger over the devil, and to show the devil that he may struggle and resist to his last breath against God and His holy ones, but he would be a failure and inferior force. Pope Leo XIII s composition and institution of the prayer was done as a means of willing that which God wills: that evil be cast away and grace reign supreme. It was as if in praying this prayer the Christian, having enlisted in the Army of the Lord in their Baptism, took up their arms for battle and joined in the fight against evil, allying themselves with the Chief Prince and Commander of the Heavenly Hosts. Soon to be canonized Blessed Pope Paul VI and canonized Pope St. John Paul II both recognized the signs of this spiritual struggle. Paul VI stated in a homily on the 9th anniversary of his coronation (popes were crowned in those days) that through some mysterious fissure no, it is not mysterious; through some fissure, the smoke of Satan has entered the Church of God. There is doubt, uncertainty, problems, unrest, dissatisfaction, confrontation. The Church is no longer trusted. WISDOM FROM FATHER WOLFE 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time We trust the first profane prophet we see who speaks to us in some newspaper, and we run behind him and ask him if he has the formula for true life. And we are not alert to the fact that we are already the owners and masters of the formula of true life. Doubt has entered our consciences, and it entered by windows that should have been open to the light science [which] exists to give us truths that do not separate God, but make us seek Him all the more and celebrate him with greater intensity [has] become the gymnasium of confusion and sometimes of absurd contradictions. Progress is celebrated, only so that it can then be demolished with revolutions that are more radical and more strange, so as to negate everything that has been achieved, and to come away as primitives after having so exalted the advances of the modern world. This state of uncertainty even holds sway in the Church. Such an impression was not lost on Pope St. John Paul II, who in 1994 renewed the appeal of his holy predecessor Leo XIII to frequently take up the prayer of St. Michael as a defense in the battle of our times against the forces of darkness and against the spirits of the world: May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle we are told about in the Letter to the Ephesians, Draw strength from the Lord and from his mighty power (Eph 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle recalling before our eyes the image of St. Michael the Archangel (Rev. 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had a very vivid recollection of this scene when, at the end of the last century, he introduced a special prayer to St Michael throughout the Church. St Michael the Archangel defend us in battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. Although today this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it, and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world. [Pope John Paul II, Regina Caeli, 24 April 1994] The version of the Prayer of St. Michael that we are familiar with is actually an abbreviated version of the full prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII, the full text follows: O Glorious Prince of the heavenly host, St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle and in the terrible warfare that we are waging against the principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the evil spirits. 4 WISDOM FROM FATHER WOLFEW immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of Satan. Fight this day the battle of the Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in Heaven. That cruel, ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels. Behold, this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay and cast into eternal perdition souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. This wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity. These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on her most sacred possessions. In the Holy Place itself, where the See of Holy Peter and the Chair of Truth has been set up as the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety, with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck, the sheep may be scattered. Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious power of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude. Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly find mercy in the sight of the Lord; and vanquishing the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen. V. Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers. R. The Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered, the root of David. V. Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord. R. As we have hoped in Thee. V. O Lord, hear my prayer. R. And let my cry come unto Thee. Let us pray: O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as supplicants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin Immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious St. Michael the Archangel, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all the other unclean spirits who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of souls. Amen. We Stand With Christ Campaign Update Thank you to the 76 generous parish families who have made a pledge to We Stand With Christ! Our parish has been with you in prayer during this difficult time and we would like to be with you again as a Parish Community during this month dedicated to the Faithfully Departed. All those who were buried during that time will be mentioned by name during the Evening Prayer. This is a beautiful way to remember our loved ones, to pray for the repose of their souls that they may find rest and peace in the Lord. We know that at the moment of death that life changes, it does not end. Our relationship with our loved ones continues and our faith tells us that we will meet them again in God s Kingdom. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Please let us know if you can attend and join us to pray for all our deceased relatives and friends by calling the Parish Office at No need to write checks or bring cash to church.
