2 St. Mary Catholic Church Third Sunday of Lent FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Just a reminder, do not take what the news folks have to say as gospel truth. If you want to know what Pope Francis says go to a Catholic website that has verba m what the Holy Father says whether it is a prepared speech or an off the cuff remark. As you know, and without being paranoid, the press is not a friend of the Catholic Church. The press is there for themselves and I shall admit that I think they were a bit more balanced in previous years. Please, read for yourself and then decide what was said and what is truth. Make a visit to the Diocese of Bridgeport website to see a wonderful ar cle wri en by Fr. Wolfe describing our Mercy Shrine during the Jubilee Year of Mercy. I hope to see it in the Fairfield County Catholic next month. Archbishop Jeanbart is the Melkite Metropolitan of Aleppo, Syria. He sent this le er to Aid to the Church in Need. He was just 13, our poor Fouad Banna, this child whom we buried this a ernoon we, his sister Rosy, his close family members and myself. His two parents, both also gravely wounded, were not present at his sorrowful funeral ceremony, for they themselves are hanging between life and death, in intensive care. The three of them were in their apartment the day before yesterday, in the evening, when the building collapsed a er being struck by one of the many rockets fired from the rebel side into our Chris an quarter in the city of Aleppo. Of his immediate family the only one present at his funeral was poor Rosy, his sister, a young student aged 17. When I asked her if there was anything I could do to help her, the only thing she said to me was, Father, I beg you, ask the Lord to heal my two parents. Rosy has been le terribly alone. She is in mourning, together with many other Chris ans, as I write these words. They have been devastated following this umpteenth tragedy that has befallen our innocent families in this city, ravaged by the con nuing and savage bombardments by the jihadists who, a er having destroyed everything we have, are now daily terrorizing the popula on and doing everything they can to prevent our people, who are innocent and peaceful, from simply living in their own homes even to the extent of trying to wipe them out if they stay on in the country. There were five people in the Chris an quarter who were slaughtered along with Fouad that day. How much suffering and unhappiness they have subjected us to, for more than four years now, these brutal and pi less assailants! They want to rule the world and claim to be obeying God in their a empts to impose, by force and violence, their outdated way of life and their archaic laws on every human being in the world. Are you s ll there?, My friends ask me: What are you wai ng for to leave? The reason we are holding out, we Chris ans, despite everything that happens to us, is deeply rooted in the history of our Church, which is that of the earliest Chris ans. We have been here in Syria ever since the return of our brethren from Jerusalem, right from the earliest days. They had been bap zed by the apostles themselves, as we are told in the Acts of the Apostles. We owe our origins to those Jews of the Diaspora who regularly made their tradi onal pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost each year. Paul was bap zed, confirmed, ordained to the priesthood and sent out to preach the good news to the world by our forefathers in Damascus. The Chris ans who are suffering here today are the descendants of Chris an believers who have remained faithful to Christ for 2,000 years and who had the courage to pay with their lives for their unwavering fidelity to the Church of the Word Incarnate, who has always been the Alpha and the Omega of their existence. Our resistance also has to do with our belonging to this na on of Syria, the country we love and cherish for the fact that we have lived here for centuries, for everything it has given us in the past and for everything that it can s ll offer us in the future. We lived here before, for decades, respected, happy and at peace, and we hope, a er this unjust and ignoble war that has been inflicted on us for I know not what reason, that we will be able to find here a new economic revival and a civil society s ll more open to individual liberty and the diversity of its various different social elements. Our resistance is part of our struggle for the sake of a be er tomorrow, tomorrow where every man will be fully respected in his right to choose his own faith and to live it without hindrance, following the religion to which, in all conscience, he feels moved to adhere. Sunday, 2/28 Monday, 2/29 Tuesday, 3/1 Wednesday, 3/2 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am, 5:30pm 1:00pm Confirma on Retreat 6:30pm Junior Youth Group 11:30am Blood Drive 4:45pm Children s Choir Rehearsal

3 St. Mary Catholic Church February 28, 2016 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE We, the Chris ans of Syria, have more need than ever today of our brothers in the West. We have need of their prayers and of their support. We need their constant and decisive advocacy with their poli cal representa ves and their governments. It is me for these gentlemen to consider our terrible sufferings and to change their a tude towards us. We hope that they will understand, once and for all, that we are determined to remain in our own country. This is a vital need for us and it represents an obvious and inalienable human right; it means as much to us as our life itself. The late Supreme Court Jus ce Antonin Scalia's devo on to his Catholic faith and his family, and his dedica on to serving the law and his country, make him a role model for public servants of all faiths, Washington Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl said in a Feb. 16 interview. "Jus ce Scalia spoke of himself as a man devoted to his wife and family, commi ed to the prac ce of law and a believing disciple of the Lord. All of that enhanced his ability to carry out his public service on the Supreme Court," the cardinal told the Catholic Standard, Washington's archdiocesan newspaper. "His commitment to family, his dedica on to the law and his personal religious faith are all elements that enrich our culture and society. In all of this, he was, for many, a true model." Cardinal Wuerl also noted how Scalia, who died Feb. 13, each year faithfully a ended the Red Mass at the Cathedral of St. Ma hew the Apostle in Washington. That annual liturgy on the Sunday before the Supreme Court begins its term is celebrated to seek God's blessing and the guidance of the Holy Spirit on the administra on of jus ce. "To all who knew Jus ce Antonin Scalia, it was clear that he was a man of faith," the cardinal said. "His annual presence at the Red Mass was always his personal tes mony to the importance of God and prayer in his life. Invoking the gi of the Holy Spirit was for him a personal act of belief in God's presence at work in our life and the wisdom of God probing our heart and lending light to our human knowledge." The cardinal added, "In conversa ons with him, it was clear to me that he regularly opened his heart to the Lord." Washington's archbishop said the late Supreme Court jus ce was also shaped by his Catholic educa on. Jus ce Scalia graduated as the valedictorian in his class from two Jesuit schools - Xavier High School in Manha an, New York, and Georgetown University in Washington, where he earned a bachelor's degree in history before later earning his law degree from Harvard. "Jus ce Scalia's educa on, pu ng him in contact with the great Judeo-Chris an tradi on, included as well an introduc on into an understanding of the best of human wisdom," Cardinal Wuerl said. One year a er being confirmed as an associate jus ce of the Supreme Court, Scalia addressed the John Carroll Society, a group of Catholic professional women and men in the Archdiocese of Washington. In that 1987 address, Scalia said, "A good government should not impede the religious prac ces of its people.... Its main func on is here, ensuring a safe, just and coopera ve society." Those two different spheres, church and state, are "interdependent but separate," he said. Scalia "clearly understood the limits of government in a emp ng to intrude into the faith life of believers and the limits of any individual faith community in iden fying itself with the state," said Cardinal Wuerl. Msgr. Peter Vaghi, the long me chaplain of the John Carroll Society and a friend of Scalia, also praised him as a man of faith and a family man. "His Catholic faith guided his life. He was a family man. He had nine children and 36 grandchildren. He was a man of great integrity, bigger than life.... He was an extraordinary jurist." Scalia's a endance at the annual Red Mass each year underscored the importance of prayer in his life. The jus ce was an honorary member of the John Carroll Society and received the society's medal. The priest, who also is pastor of the Church of the Li le Flower in Bethesda, Maryland, said that Scalia's Italian- American roots "were very much a part of his life." "I'm Italian American, and he was the first Italian American to be on the Supreme Court. That was a great source of pride to so many of us who are Italian American," said Msgr. Vaghi. 4 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE The priest also commented on Scalia's friendship with Jus ce Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who is Jewish and a liberal. The two were usually on opposing sides in Supreme Court decisions, but the two jus ces went to the opera and on vaca ons together, once even riding an elephant together in India. A er Scalia died, Ginsburg issued a statement saying they had been "best buddies." "It was representa ve of the way things used to be in Washington," Msgr. Vaghi said, no ng how in bygone days, members of Congress from opposing par es would debate issues, and then socialize together a erward. "One can differ and disagree on issues, but s ll respect each other as individuals. We've come a long way from that," the priest said. The formation and preparation our seminarians receive both at St. John Fisher and in major seminary spans 5-8 years. This year, Bishop Caggiano will ordain 2 seminarians to the priesthood. At an annual cost of more than $21,000, your Annual Catholic Appeal gift will help underwrite this worthwhile investment and help promote and foster vocations to the priesthood throughout our diocese.
