2 St. Mary Catholic Church May 27, 2018 > Congratulations to all those who received the Sacrament of Confirmation this week. Confirmation is the completion of the Sacraments of Initiation and being sealed with the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, they are now equipped to bring the Gospel to the world. We also had adults who also made their Confirmation on the Feast of Pentecost. These adults have journeyed through the Rite of Christian Initiation for the past year. Adults and teens alike have learned through catechists, prayer experiences, Confession and social services to see Christ in all those they meet. Please remember that Confirmation is NOT graduation. All of us must continue our faith journey, developing our relationships with God. Weekly Mass is a must, an obligation and a privilege for us to grow in God s strength, love and peace. Parents, please encourage your teen to continue to come to Mass each week. FATHER COREY S EPISTLE > On Saturday, May 19, Bishop Frank J. Caggiano ordained three men as transitional deacons for the Diocese of Bridgeport. The Ordination Mass was celebrated at 11 am in St. Augustine Cathedral. Traditionally, ordination as a transitional deacon is the last step before ordination to the priesthood. The Church has been ordaining deacons since its earliest days, explained Father John Connaughton, director of vocations for the diocese. The Acts of the Apostles gives the account of the first deacons, who were men chosen for their good character and ordained to provide assistance to the Apostles and their successors, the bishops, by serving the basic needs of the community especially the poor and the most vulnerable. The three men ordained come from different backgrounds, all of which will enrich the life of faith in this diocese. The three men who will be ordained to the transitional diaconate this year all have the hearts of servants, said Father Connaughton. As deacons they will also be able to proclaim the Gospel, preach, and assist the priest at the altar during Mass, as well as baptize. Next year, please God, they will be ordained priests. But priests always retain their identity as deacons and continue to bear the responsibility of service to the bishop and to Jesus beloved poor. A good priest must first be a good deacon, always having a servant s heart. I am confident that Peter, David and Chris will live out their diaconate well, with the help of God s grace and the prayerful support of the people of the diocese, said Father Connaughton. Peter Joseph Adamski, 64, one of four sons of the late Peter and Melda Adamski, grew up in Jersey City, N.J., and now considers Holy Spirit in Stamford as his home parish. He and wife, Kathy, were married over 40 years before she died in They have one son, John, who will be a lector and gift bearer at the Ordination Mass. He holds his bachelor s degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he graduated in 1976, and earned an MBA from Rutgers the following year along with his C.P.A. license. He has been a CFO with Johnson & Johnson Co., worked for Bausch & Lomb eye health products in Rochester, N.Y., and was the CEO of a successful foam manufacturing company in New Jersey. Peter had thoughts of becoming a priest as a teenager and discussed the possibility of a priestly vocation with Kathy shortly before she passed. He will complete his seminary studies at Pope St. John XXIII Seminary in Weston, Mass., in Deacon Adamski assisted at his first Mass and give the homily at Holy Spirit on Sunday, May 20, at 9:30 am. Msgr. Kevin Royal, Holy Spirit s pastor, was the principal celebrant. Besides the sacraments, said Deacon Adamski. I think about being able to minister to couples about marriage, whether they re contemplating marriage or having troubles within their marriage and being able to minister to the sick. I have a rich experience across all of those fronts that I can draw on, to help in my ministry. I really feel God is calling me by name to his holy priesthood. I know that what God wants of me, and any of us, is what will help me to help others, make me happiest and lead me to heaven. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church Christopher Joseph Ford, 28, was born in Bridgeport on October 2, The only boy in a family with three sisters, he grew up in Naugatuck, attending St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School and Naugatuck High School. His parents, Terence and Teresa Ford, live in Naugatuck and are members of St. Francis. He graduated from Southern CT State University in New Haven in While attending Southern, he worked for candidates for the U.S. Senate and CT governorship. Upon graduation, he worked for Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA, while obtaining a master s degree in education from Kent State University in Ohio. He entered St. John Fisher Seminary in Deacon Ford will earn his M.Div./S.T.B. degree from St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, N.Y. in Deacon Ford assisted at his first Mass at Holy Family Parish in Fairfield on May 20 at 11 am. Father Norm Guilbert, Holy Family s pastor, was the main celebrant. Deacon Ford gave the homily. One of the most difficult things in life is to follow the will of God, even when we have clarity on what it is, he says. I felt the call to serve God as a priest for most of my life, but spent most of that time focused on what I wanted, rather than what God wanted for me and what would ultimately bring me my greatest fulfillment and happiness. These past five years of formation have been a great blessing, learning to truly receive the never-ending mercy of God. I approach my ordination as a deacon with an ever-deepening awareness of the providence of God in my life, a consoling faith in the reality of his presence and mercy, and a growing desire to reflect the love he has continually shown me to those he calls me to serve in his name. David Roman, Jr., 33, the first of three sons of David and Yvonne Roman, was born in Waterbury on April 18, He grew up in that city, he and his family attended St. Patrick Parish. He graduated from Western Connecticut State College in Danbury with a B.A. in history in 2008 and earned a master s degree in education from Sacred Heart University in Fairfield. He taught at St. Joseph School in Danbury, and served as youth minister at St. Joseph Parish and Notre Dame of Easton Parish prior to entering St. John Fisher The Most Holy Trinity Seminary in Stamford. He will complete his theological studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., next year. Deacon Roman assisted at his first Mass in St. Joseph Church on May 20 at 12 noon. Father Samuel Scott, pastor, was the celebrant. What s drawn me to the priesthood has always been the call to love, says Deacon Roman. I entered seminary with a desire to lovingly serve the Lord, and my brothers and sisters in Christ, with my whole heart, soul, mind, and strength. During my time in formation, that capacity to love has grown exponentially. And in my priestly ministry I hope to be a living witness of the Greatest Commandment so that others might encounter the same mercy, joy, and consolation of the Resurrected Jesus that I ve encountered. > Deacon Joseph M. Melita died Sunday, May 13, at the Jewish Home for the Elderly in Fairfield. He was 96 years old. Born in Bridgeport on April 22, 1923, Deacon Melita graduated from Warren Harding High School in 1941 and served as Technical Sergeant in the Air Corps from He fought in the Battle of Normandy and flew 55 sorties in dangerous combat that took the lives of many of his fellow soldiers. He married Bernice Zaleski Melita in St. Michael s Church in Bridgeport on September 24, 1946, and the Melitas raised six children. 4 Diaconate Program in 1975, and was ordained a deacon for the Diocese of Bridgeport on February 25, He provided diaconal ministry at St. Raphael Parish in Bridgeport from and then served at St. Margaret Shrine, also in Bridgeport. Beginning in 1988, Deacon Melita served for many years as the Director of Catholic Scouting in the Secretariat for Christian Education of the Diocese of Bridgeport. He received the Bronze Pelican award, given to adults who give of their time to counsel, to lead, and to train young people to enrich the spiritual development of the Catholic Youth in the program of the Boy Scouts of America. In honor of his life-long contributions to Catholic Scouting, Deacon Melita was honored with the prestigious James E. West Fellow Award in After his formal retirement from diaconal ministry in 2015, Deacon Melita continued to provide diaconal service at the Shrine, where he touched many lives through his faithful witness. He was given special recognition by Bishop Frank J. Caggiano at the First Annual Clergy Retirement Celebration Mass at St. Matthew Church in A wake was held on Thursday, May 17 at Saint Margaret Shrine located at 2523 Park Avenue in Bridgeport from 3:00-7:00 pm. On Friday, May 18 at 10:00 am Bishop Caggiano celebrated the funeral Mass at Saint Margaret Shrine and Deacon Don Foust was the homilist. Vesting took place in the Community Room beneath the Church. Interment was at Long Hill Cemetery, 53 Middlebrooks Avenue in Trumbull. > As the month dedicated to Mary continues, here are some ways to celebrate your Most Holy Mother: Imitate Mary! If we truly love somebody, then we want to get to know them better, follow them more closely and finally to imitate their good qualities that we call virtues. St. Louis de Montfort in his classic True Devotion to Mary gives us a list of the ten principal virtues of Mary. Imitate them and you will be on the Highway to holiness. Here they are: Her deep humility, lively faith, blind obedience, unceasing prayer, constant self-denial, surpassing purity, ardent love, heroic patience, angelic kindness, and heavenly wisdom! St. Louis teaches us: The greatest saints, those richest in grace and virtue will be the most assiduous in praying to the most Blessed Virgin, looking up to her as the perfect model to imitate and as a powerful helper to assist them. When you are tempted, call on Mary! Our life is a constant combat zone, until death! We should not fight alone against the devil, the flesh and the world. Rather, in the heat of temptation, when all seems to be lost call upon the Holy Name of Mary; pray the Hail Mary! If done, all the powers of hell will be vanquished. Mary is the General in the army. At her command the FATHER COREY S EPISTLE enemies the evil spirits take to flight, vanish, and are defeated! St. Francis de Sales was tempted to despair and through the prayer to Mary, Memorare (attributed to St. Bernard) the temptation was conquered. St. Anthony Mary Claret was tempted fiercely to give in to a temptation against purity. It was through his fervent prayers to Mary that the devil of impurity was expelled and young Anthony was given special graces to live chastity, to found a Religious Order, preach constantly and write many books that did immense good. As St. Bonaventure asserts: Men do not fear a powerful hostile army as the powers of hell fear the name and protection of Mary. Read about Mary! For a well-formed and integral Mariology we should cultivate both doctrine and devotion. Doctrine without devotion can be arid and dry. Whereas, devotion without doctrine can easily degenerate into mere sentimentalism! Why not read the Apostolic Letter of Saint John Paul II Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary. This spiritual gem combines both solid Catholic doctrine (Mariology) with a tender love and devotion to Mary. The saintly Pope exhorts the entire world to contemplate the face of Jesus through the eyes and heart of Mary. Mary is the quickest, shortest, easiest and most efficacious path to Jesus. Pray the Most Holy Rosary. In Fatima Our Lady appeared six times to the Shepherd children Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco. In each and every apparition Our Lady insisted upon the praying of the most Holy Rosary. Six times! St. John Paul II in his document on the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Rosary insisted, pleaded, that the whole world pray the Holy Rosary for the salvation of the family and for world peace. The famous Rosary priest, Father Patrick Peyton put it concisely: The family that prays together stays together and A world at prayer is a world at peace. Why not obey the new saint Saint John Paul II? Why not obey the Mother of God, Our Lady of Fatima s requests? If done the family will be saved and there will be peace that the human heart so longs for. The first gesture we should do every morning is prayer a prayer of consecration to Jesus through the Immaculate heart of Mary. Start off the day right through Mary! Blessed Mother of Teresa moved by great love for Mary said: Mary, give me your heart: so beautiful, so pure so immaculate; your Heart so full of love and humility that I May be able to receive Jesus in the Bread of Life and love Him as you love Him and serve Him in the distressing guise of the poor.

These classes are offered on the first Sunday of each month. Anyone requesting a Sponsorship form must be a currently registered and practicing Catholic, and they must attend one of the New Baptism Classes to receive it. There is a 3-month waiting period for a sponsorship form for the newly registered. The Catholic requirements for a Godparent/Sponsor are: you must be at least 16 years old; received the Sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation in the Catholic Church; attend Mass regularly on Sundays and on Holy Days of Obligation; receive the Sacraments of Penance and Holy Communion regularly; sincerely try to follow the moral teaching of the Catholic Church; and if married, were married in the Catholic Church. ARRANGEMENTS FOR MARRIAGE: All couples must meet with a parish clergyman at least six (6) months before the marriage is to be celebrated.
