2 St. Mary Catholic Church FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Fourth Sunday of Lent You all know by now that Fr. Wolfe and I do not like fish. (I do like lobster though). When it comes to fasting, we Catholics don t have much to complain about. We fast, but we can still have a normal meal and two smaller meals. We can t eat meat on Fridays, but we can eat fish. And so, we fry it. And throw a party with all our friends. And drink beer. The Church has also been pretty accommodating in the realm of deciding what is fish and not fish for Friday Lenten purposes. Here are some obscure foods you didn t know were allowed (or were at one time allowed) on your Friday Lenten dinner menu: Capybara This giant South American rodent (the world s largest rodent) is still considered a fish for Lenten purposes. When the Spanish settlers began converting South Americans, they weren t sure whether to allow the eating of the giant amphibious rodent during Lent. They wrote to Rome (or possibly even sent Padre Sojo, a famous Venezuelan priest), describing the rodent that spent a significant amount of time in the water and even had a salty, fish like taste. A papal bull was issued, allowing the consumption of capybara throughout Lent, which continues in Venezuela and other South American countries today. It s delicious, one restaurant owner told the New York Sun in I know it s a rat, but it tastes really good. Iguana In Nicaragua, iguana tail soup is a popular Lenten dish. It is really tasty. It is a traditional dish, Manuel Zamora told the Huffington Post in 2013 as he bought two iguanas at a market. The popular iguana soup is made with iguana meat and eggs, ground and toasted corn meal, and vegetables. Another soup called Levanta Muerto, which translates roughly as Raises the Dead, consists of meat from the black, spiny tailed iguana, brains, bone marrow, bull testicles and, in some cases, shellfish. While many people may not have considered reptiles for their Lenten meals, they are allowed, because they are cold blooded animals. Beaver America apparently used to be crawling with beavers. As many as 400 million beavers are thought to have once swam in North America s streams and rivers. When European settlers arrived, the beaver pelts and fat were a hot commodity, and the beaver population rapidly declined. Beaver meat was also especially popular among the Native Americans. In a similar dilemma as his Venezuelan counterparts, the Bishop of Quebec in the 17th century asked his superiors whether beaver could be considered a fish for Lent, since it spent so much time in the water. While it is unclear whether those dispensations still stand today, beaver is still a popular dish in some areas of North America during Lent today. Muskrat Like its sister semi aquatic rodent the beaver, Muskrat has also been a popular Lenten meat in certain parts of North America. In particular, cities south of Detroit have always had a taste for muskrats (they call them mush rats ) on Fridays in Lent. The origin of the muskrat dispensation is widely debated some said it came from the Pope during the War of 1812, others believe an archbishop granted it during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Whatever the story, it s popularity has held strong. It s an oral tradition going back many generations, Yvonne Lockwood, a researcher at Michigan State University told the New York Times in a story from their archives on the matter. Even if there is no document to prove it, people continue to believe it, so it is not going to go away. In 2002, the Archdiocese of Detroit officially reiterated the dispensation, saying that There is a long standing permission dating back to our missionary origins in the 1700s to permit the consumption of muskrat on days of abstinence, including Fridays of Lent. Bishop Kenneth Povish of Lansing described the practice as immemorial custom and said that anyone who could eat muskrat was doing penance worthy of the greatest saints. Alligator Alligator meat, while perhaps not popular in many parts of the United States, is especially popular in New Orleans, Louisiana. That s why Jim Piculas, an alligator wrangler, wrote to the Archbishop of New Orleans in 2010 to ask whether alligator was permissible during Fridays in Lent. The reply (in the affirmative) went viral in 2013, when Piculas posted a picture of the letter online. Concerning the question if alligator is acceptable to eat during the Lenten season yes, the alligator is considered in the fish family, Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond wrote in a 2010 letter provided to CNA by the New Orleans archdiocese Feb. 15. The archbishop said he agreed with the parishioner that the alligator is a magnificent creature that is important to the state of Louisiana and which is also considered seafood. 3 St. Mary Catholic Church March 26, 2017 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Puffin This adorable little seagoing bird s fish or fowl status was once hotly debated in northern France. According to the book Food and Faith in Christian Culture, a local priest informed the Archbishop of Rouen that the monks in a nearby Benedictine monastery had been offering puffin meat during Lent in The Archbishop issued a swift and unequivocal reply, to be read at all parishes, denouncing the puffin as approved fasting fare. But the monks were not satisfied, and enlisted doctors from a local college to help them compile evidence that the puffin was in fact more fish than fowl. The findings of the investigation, presented to the Archbishop at a clerical assembly, convinced him to reverse his decision. It is unclear whether this dispensation still stands. Remember, if you have questions about whether a bizarre meat you re eating is kosher for Lent, just contact your local diocese to find out. On Holy Saturday at noon, we shall celebrate the traditional blessing of Easter Food. Though traditionally an Eastern European custom, the blessing of Easter Foods has become a beautiful family celebration all over the United States. Since we fast from certain foods during Lent, it is most fitting and appropriate to bring those foods to Church as a sign of newness of life and to celebrate the joy of Easter as we feast together with our families. I encourage every family to take part in this blessing. If you have never come to the blessing before and don t know what to bring, here are some suggestions: Meat that you would serve at Easter Dinner (or a sample of the meat), baked goods that you have made for the Holiday, candy, salt, butter, cheese, bread, wine and anything else that your family enjoys on Easter. Get a basket and place the items in the basket, cover it with a cloth and bring it to Church with your family. The smells in the Church is worth the visit. Please come if you have come before, please come if you have never been. Make this a new tradition for you and your family. Have you gone to confession for Lent? Please make a stop on Saturdays, the special times we have during Holy Week, or, if you can t make these times, call the rectory to make an appointment at any time. As part of your Lenten practice, that is part of your fasting, prayer and almsgiving, please consider making a donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal. Our Parish goal is $160,000. No gift is too small. Please help us to help those in need. We need you to make this Appeal a success. Simnel Cake for Laetare Sunday "The fourth Sunday of Lent is rather unique; like the third Sunday of Advent ("Gaudete Sunday"), the fourth Sunday of Lent is a break in an otherwise penitential season. Laetare Sunday is also known as "Mothering Sunday" because of the Epistle reading that speaks of how not the Jews, but those who come to Christ, regardless of their ancestry, are the inheritors of Abraham's promise. The old practice of visiting the cathedral, or "mother church" of the diocese on this day is another reason for the name. In England, natural mothers are honored today, too, in a manner rather like the American "Mother's Day." Spring bulb flowers (daffodils, for ex.) are given to mothers, and simnel cake is made to celebrate the occasion (this cake has also become an Easter Cake of late, however). The word "simnel" comes from the Latin "simila," a high grade flour." Simnel Cake ingredients: 1 cup margarine, softened; 1 cup light brown sugar; 4 eggs; 1 3/4 cups self rising flour; 1 1/3 cups golden raisins; 1 cup dried currants; 2/3 cup candied cherries, rinsed, dried and quartered; 1/4 cup candied mixed fruit peel, chopped; 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest; 2 teaspoons mixed spice 1 pound almond paste; 2 tablespoons apricot jam; 1 egg, beaten. Preheat oven to 300 degrees F. Grease and flour an 8 inch springform pan. Line the bottom and sides of pan with greased parchment paper. In a large bowl, cream together the margarine and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time. Beat in the flour. Stir in the golden raisins, currants, candied cherries, mixed fruit, lemon zest and mixed spice. Pour 1/2 of batter into prepared pan. 4 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Divide almond paste into 3 equal portions. Roll out 1/3 of the almond paste to an 8 inch circle. Place the circle of almond paste on the cake batter in pan. Cover with remaining cake batter. Bake in the preheated oven for 2 1/2 hours, or until evenly brown and firm to the touch. If the cake is browning too quickly, cover with foil after an hour of baking. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely. Set oven to broil. When the cake has cooled, brush the top with warmed apricot jam. Roll out 1/3 of the almond paste into an 8 inch circle and place on top of cake. Divide the remaining 1/3 of almond paste into 11 pieces and roll into balls. These represent the 12 Apostles minus Judas. Brush the almond paste on top of cake with beaten egg. Arrange the 11 balls around the outside edge on the top of cake. Brush the balls lightly with egg. Place cake under the broiler for 8 to 10 minutes, or until almond paste is golden brown.
