These classes are offered on the first Sunday of each month. Anyone requesting a Sponsorship form must be a currently registered and practicing Catholic, and they must attend one of the New Baptism Classes to receive it. There is a 3 month waiting period for a sponsorship form for the newly registered. 2 St. Mary Catholic Church 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Recognizing St. Mary Magdalene's role as the first to witness Christ's resurrection and as a "true and authentic evangelizer," Pope Francis raised the July 22 memorial of St. Mary Magdalene to a feast on the church's liturgical calendar, the Vatican announced. A decree formalizing the decision was published by the Congregation for Divine Worship June 10 along with an article explaining its significance. Both the decree and the article were titled "Apostolorum Apostola" ("Apostle of the Apostles"). In the article for the Vatican newspaper, Archbishop Arthur Roche, secretary of the congregation, wrote that in celebrating "an evangelist who proclaims the central joyous message of Easter," St. Mary Magdalene's feast day is a call for all Christians to "reflect more deeply on the dignity of women, the new evangelization and the greatness of the mystery of divine mercy." "Pope Francis has taken this decision precisely in the context of the Jubilee of Mercy to highlight the relevance of this woman who showed great love for Christ and was much loved by Christ," Archbishop Roche wrote. While most liturgical celebrations of individual saints during the year are known formally as memorials, those classified as feasts are reserved for important events in Christian history and for saints of particular significance, such as the Twelve Apostles. In his apostolic letter "Dies Domini" ("The Lord's Day"), St. John Paul II explained that the "commemoration of the saints does not obscure the centrality of Christ, but on the contrary extols it, demonstrating as it does the power of the redemption wrought by him." Preaching about St. Mary Magdalene, Pope Francis highlighted Christ's mercy toward a woman who was "exploited and despised by those who believed they were righteous," but she was loved and forgiven by him. Her tears at Christ's empty tomb are a reminder that "sometimes in our lives, tears are the lenses we need to see Jesus," the pope said April 2, 2013, during Mass in his residence, the Domus Sanctae Marthae. Pope Francis also mentions her specifically in the prayer he composed for the Year of Mercy: "Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured paradise to the repentant thief." Archbishop Roche explained that in giving St. Mary Magdalene the honor of being the first person to see the empty tomb and the first to listen to the truth of the resurrection, "Jesus has a special consideration and mercy for this woman, who manifests her love for him, looking for him in the garden with anguish and suffering. Drawing a comparison between Eve, who "spread death where there was life," and St. Mary Magdalene, who "proclaimed life from the tomb, a place of death," the archbishop said her feast day is a lesson for all Christians to trust in Christ who is "alive and risen." "It is right that the liturgical celebration of this woman has the same level of feast given to the celebration of the apostles in the general Roman calendar and highlights the special mission of this woman who is an example and model for every woman in the church." Vatican City Growing acceptance of euthanasia does not indicate increased compassion, but highlights the rise of a selfish "throwaway culture" that casts aside the sick, the dying and those who do not satisfy the perceived requirements of a healthy life, Pope Francis said. In a culture that is increasingly "technological and individualistic," some tend to "hide behind alleged compassion to justify killing a patient," the pope told health professionals from Spain and Latin America June 9. "True compassion does not marginalize, humiliate or exclude, much less celebrate a patient passing away," the pope said. "You know well that would mean the triumph of selfishness, of that 'throwaway culture' that rejects and despises people who do not meet certain standards of health, beauty or usefulness." Thanking doctors who care for "those who suffer in body and spirit," Pope Francis insisted physicians' identity as doctors does not depend solely on their knowledge or competence, but mainly on their compassion and mercy toward the sick. "Compassion does not mean pity, it means 'suffering with,'" the pope said. When physicians share in the suffering of their patients, he added, the "sacred value of the life of the patient does not disappear or become obscured." 3 St. Mary Catholic Church June 19, 2016 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Pope Francis reminded the medical professionals of the biblical tradition of health care, citing the example of the good Samaritan "who does not pass by the injured person at the roadside, but rather moved by compassion, cures and attends to him." "The Christian medical tradition has always been inspired by the parable of the Good Samaritan, the pope said. It is about identifying with the love of the son of God, who 'went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.'" However, he said, care for the sick requires patience, and doctors must not give in to "the functionalist temptation" of applying quick solutions that are motivated by "false compassion" or cost efficiency. "The dignity of human life is at stake; the dignity of the medical vocation is at stake," the pope said. "Nothing must prevent you from 'putting more heart into your hands. The life of Fr. Augustus Tolton already reads like a novel, but now it is illustrated in full color in a new graphic book produced in partnership with Liturgy Training Publications in Chicago and Editions du Signe in France. Fr. Tolton s story that of the first identified black priest in the United States comes to life in the 48 page, 12 by 9 inch novel aimed at helping young people and adults learn about the extraordinary life of Father Tolton, according to Claude Bernard Costecalde, director of publications for Editions du Signe. The publishers worked closely with the Father Augustus Tolton Guild, the official organization promoting his cause, to ensure the story s accuracy. Fr. Tolton s life story is already a compelling read. Born into slavery, he fled with his mom and siblings through the woods of northern Missouri and across the Mississippi while being pursued by soldiers. He was only 9 years old. The small family made their home in Quincy, Illinois, a sanctuary for runaway slaves. The boy s father died earlier in St. Louis after escaping slavery to serve in the Union Army. Growing up in Quincy and serving at Mass, young Augustus felt a call to the priesthood but because of rampant racism no seminary in the United States will accept him. He headed to Rome, convinced he would become a missionary priest serving in Africa. However, after ordination he was sent back to his hometown to be a missionary to the community there, again facing rampant racism. He was such a good preacher that many white Catholics filled the pews for his Masses along with black Catholics. This upset the white priests in the town so Fr. Tolton headed north to Chicago, at the request of Archbishop Patrick Feehan, to minister to the black Catholic community there. Fr. Tolton worked tirelessly for his congregation in Chicago, to the point of exhaustion, and on July 9, 1897, he died of heat stroke while returning from a priests retreat. He was 43. He encountered mistreatment and hate with faith, hope and love. (Father) Tolton persevered even when there seemed to be no logical reason to do so; he gifted his priesthood to everyone without distinction, both while and black, and was resented for it, writes Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Joseph N. Perry, postulator of Fr. Tolton s cause, in the novel s preface. Through it all, he exuded an inner peace rooted in his love for Jesus, his innocence and his profound respect for the church. Chicago Cardinal Francis E. George introduced Fr. Tolton s cause for canonization in 2011 and the priest was declared a servant of God. The archdiocesan investigation into his life and virtues was formally closed in September. All of the evidence gathered by those working on his cause were sent to Rome to be analyzed, bound into an official position paper and evaluated by theologians. The next phase of his cause would be for him to be declared venerable if the Vatican determines he led a life of heroic virtue. The paramedics rushed the man to the nearest hospital where he had emergency open heart bypass surgery. He awakened from the surgery to find himself in the care of nuns at the Catholic Hospital. A nun was seated next to his bed holding a clipboard loaded with several forms, and a pen. She asked him how he was going to pay for his treatment. "Do you have health insurance?" she asked. He replied in a raspy voice, "No health insurance." The nun asked, "Do you have money in the bank?" He replied, "No money in the bank." Do you have a relative who could help you with the payments?" asked the irritated nun. He said, "I only have a spinster sister, and she is a nun." The nun became agitated and announced loudly, "Nuns are not spinsters! Nuns are married to God." The patient replied, "Perfect. Send the bill to my brother in law."
