We are very lucky to have secured Deacon Harold Burke Sivers for Advent. We shall have our Parish Mission during Advent. This Lent we shall have a Parish Retreat entitled: Meditations on the Seven Last Words of Christ. We shall conduct the Parish Retreat the week before Palm Sunday: April 3, 4, 5 at 7pm. A little about Deacon Harold. Author of Behold the Man: A Catholic Vision of Male Spirituality, Deacon Harold is one of the most sought after Catholic speakers in the Church today. Deacon Harold offers lectures, retreats and seminars in parishes, at workshops, at numerous conferences across the U.S. and around the world. You may have heard him on many national and international radio programs, including Catholic Answers Live, Catholic Connection and Kresta in the Afternoon. Deacon Harold has appeared on Life on the Rock, EWTN life and EWTH Bookmark. Wherever he speaks, Deacon Harold keeps his audiences full attention as he addresses a wide variety of topics, specializing in men s spirituality, marriage and many other Catholic issues. You can probably catch him on EWTN. We are most excited and honored to have Deacon Howard later this year. Our Lenten Retreat will be conducted by our Parish priests. Please, mark your calendars and tell your friends about this beautiful and ancient of meditations on the last moments of our Savior s life. The Little Sisters of the Poor are counting on us for help for their elderly residents during Lent. Please, bring in deodorant, hand sanitizer, body wash so that those who have given so much can now be helped in return. Father Richard Erikson, who was a couple of years ahead of me in the seminary up in Boston wrote a wonderful article about confessions that I share with you today. This week we begin our precious annual Lenten journey with the Lord and each other. The ashes placed on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday remind us of our own mortality and of the call to repentance. Lent reminds us that God is gracious and merciful to those who come to him with contrite hearts. This season is one of penance, reflection, prayer, almsgiving and fasting in order that we can prepare ourselves to better celebrate and live Christ s Resurrection on Easter Sunday and beyond. God s divine mercy is a central theme of Lent. The priceless gift of God s mercy is highlighted and celebrated by the Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I have often been asked why we need to go to confession, especially when we can pray to a God of mercy on our own, one on one. Why do we need the mediation of a priest and the Church? Here are three reflections on why we need to go to confession: Why confess your sins to a priest? Why is it necessary to go to a priest for confession if I can pray to God on my own? Sacramental confession allows God s loving mercy and his grace filled absolution to be confirmed to us through the ministry of the priest. When we pray to God, we do not necessarily hear God s response. We are often far more harsh on ourselves than God could ever be. God sees us with love, mercy and an abundance of forgiveness. We see ourselves and our sin through the eyes of guilt and shame. It is important for us to receive from a priest the unconditional love and mercy of God, as expressed and experienced in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Christ, through the priest, invites us to let go of anything that gets in the way of our relationship with him. Christ, through the priest, encourages us to open ourselves to the peace and grace which can only be found through God s forgiveness. In sacramental confession, we hear the direct expression of God s love, through the priest and the ministry of the Church. In sacramental confession, we know we have received the gift of absolution from our sins by God s chosen instruments, the Sacrament of Reconciliation and the ministry of the priest. The communal nature of sin. When we sin we not only offend God, but we also offend the individual(s) against whom we have sinned, if not the entire community of faith. Sin uproots us from our real home, the heart of God the Father. Sin also uproots us from the communion of the Church and the mystical body of Christ, which is the Church. We need to receive not only God s forgiveness, but the blessing of the Christian community. The Letter of James (5:16) speaks to the communal nature of sin and of forgiveness when James writes, Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 5:30pm Children s Choir 7:00pm Prayer Service

3 St. Mary Catholic Church March 12, 2017 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, the priest represents both Christ and His mercy, and he represents the joy and the welcoming of the Christian community over one who repents of his or her sins. Because Christ said so. Finally, and most importantly, we should go to confession to a priest because Jesus told us to do so. In His first appearance to the apostles after his Resurrection, Christ breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained (John 20:22 23). By these words, the Church and the priest have been entrusted with one of the most sacred and awesome ministries of Christ, that is, the ministry of reconciliation. I want my sins to be forgiven, not retained. I want them to be loosed, not bound. Through the sacramental ministry of the Church and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, our sins are forgiven and we are given the grace to be more like Christ. Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we experience and embody the saving ministry and healing grace of Jesus Christ. Some of the most powerful experiences of God s grace in my life have been as a confessor and as a penitent in the sacrament of reconciliation. May the power of God s grace and mercy bless us in abundance this Lent. Lent is a period of fasting, self denial and prayer, in imitation of our Lord's fasting, forty days and forty nights, and in preparation for the feast of Easter. It comprises forty days, not including Sundays, from Ash Wednesday to the end of Holy Saturday. The term "penance" should be made clear to children. It means a "change of heart," a victory over sin and a striving for holiness. The sacrifices of fasting and self denial are only means and signs of this spiritual penance. Incorporating pretzels into our Lenten program is a wonderful and appropriate devotion. The pretzel being symbolic of prayer and penance is a small but powerful instrument in bringing families to God. This activity includes the history and the significance of pretzels, and a short family ceremony of the pretzel. A traditional means of reminding the family that it is the holy season of Lent is the Lenten foods which are served only this time of the year. Thus parents and children realize, even at their meals, that prayer and penance should be practiced during these days. The pretzel has a deep spiritual meaning for Lent. In fact, it was the ancient Christian Lenten bread as far back as the fourth century. In the old Roman Empire, the faithful kept a very strict fast all through Lent: no milk, no butter, no cheese, no eggs, no cream and no meat. They made small breads of water, flour and salt, to remind themselves that Lent was a time of prayer. They shaped these breads in the form of crossed arms for in those days they crossed their arms over the breast while praying. Therefore they called the breads "little arms" (bracellae). From this Latin word, the Germanic people later coined the term "pretzel." Thus, the pretzel is the most appropriate food symbol in Lent. It still shows the form of arms crossed in prayer, reminding us that Lent is a time of prayer. It consists only of water and flour, thus proclaiming Lent as a time of fasting. The earliest picture and description of a pretzel (from the fifth century) may be found in the manuscript codex No. 3867, Vatican Library. That many people eat pretzels today all through the year, that they take them together with beer in taverns and restaurants, is only an accidental habit. In many places of Europe, pretzels are served only from Ash Wednesday to Easter, thus keeping the ancient symbolism alive. There seems to be no reason why our Christian families should not return to this beautiful custom of our ancient Roman fellow Christian, especially since we still have these breads everywhere. The children will be delighted and greatly impressed when they hear the true story of the pretzel. Ingredients: 1½ cups lukewarm water (about 110 F); 1 tablespoon honey; 1 envelope active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons); 2 cups allpurpose flour (we prefer King Arthur); 2 cups White Whole Wheat flour (from King Arthur) (or just use 4 cups all purpose flour); 1 teaspoon Kosher salt; Coarse salt (for topping); 1 egg, beaten.
