2 St. Mary Catholic Church Fifth Sunday of Easter Sunday, 5/14 Monday, 5/15 Tuesday, 5/16 Wednesday, 5/17 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am, 11:30am & 5:30pm Masses 6:30pm Senior Youth Group FATHER COREY S EPISTLE As you may recall we have a number people in our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adult) program this year. One was baptized and three others received their First Holy Communion. Steven, the man who was baptized, also received Confirmation as the Rite prescribes. The others in the program, as well as the three who received their First Holy Communion, will receive Confirmation on Pentecost at our 10:00am Mass here at St. Mary Parish. Bishop Caggiano has decided that the Home Parish of Confirmation is a better witness to the working of the Holy Spirit in our own community. I hope many will join us for this special Sacrament of Confirmation here at St. Mary. Increasingly, there has been a trend of not having a Funeral Mass for a practicing Catholic who has died. There are many reasons for this but for people who are practicing Catholics, who are weekly communicants, if not daily communicants, are not being given a Catholic funeral at the time of their death. Sometimes children don t know, understand or appreciate their parents faith so a Funeral Mass is skipped for financial reasons, the children do not have their faith as do their parents, or they simply do not see the value of a Catholic Funeral. So, in the middle of June, June 19th, we shall conduct a seminar called Making Your Wishes Known. At this seminar which is open to everyone, we shall discuss the options for a Catholic Funeral/Wake and Burial. A member of the local Funeral Directors will be present to offer advice and we shall have a notary republic to make your wishes official. It is so very important that a Catholic has a Funeral Mass for not only the deceased, but also for the family as well. The Catholic Funeral Mass must not be forsaken because of the mores of our current society. We shall run the seminar twice that day both at 9:30am and 7:00pm. Please mark your calendars. Another reminder of our shrine to St. Monica (from the bulletin of November 14, 2016): During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, many have come to realize, in a deeper way, the great love, mercy and forgiveness of our Lord. The Year of Mercy comes to a close on the Feast of Christ the King. The shrine of Divine Mercy in our Church was well received and many can to pray, offer petitions and light candles. As the Shrine will come down after the Year of Mercy we the clergy wanted to begin a new liturgical journey and source of consolation for our Parish. As a result, we have acquired a statue of St. Monica to be an intercessor for us, a place of prayer, petition and candles. Saint Monica, also known as Monica of Hippo, is St. Augustine of Hippo's mother. She was born in 331 A.D. in Tagaste, which is present day Algeria. When she was very young, she was married off to the Roman pagan Patricius, who shared his mother's violent temper. Patricius' mother lived with the couple and the duo's temper flares proved to be a constant challenge to young Monica. While Monica's prayers and Christian deeds bothered Patricius, he is said to have respected her beliefs. Three children were born to Monica and Patricius: Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Unfortunately, Monica was unable to baptize her children and when Augustine fell ill, Monica pleaded with Patricius to allow their son to be baptized. Patricius allowed it, but when Augustine was healthy again, he withdrew his permission. For years Monica prayed for her husband and mother in law, until finally, one year before Patricius' death, she successfully converted them. As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life, but unfortunately Augustine became lazy and uncouth. This greatly worried Monica, so when Patricius died, she sent the 17 year old Augustine to Carthage for schooling. While in Carthage, Augustine became a Manichaean, which was a major religion that saw the world as light and darkness, and when one died, they were removed from the world of matter and returned to the world of light, which is where life comes from. After Augustine got his education and returned home, he shared his views with Monica, who drove him from her table. Though it is not recorded how much time passed, Monica had a vision that convinced her to reconcile with her wayward son. Monica went to a bishop, who told her, "the child of those tears shall never perish." 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 5:00pm Little Flowers 7:00pm May Devotions 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 7:00pm Women of Faith 6:30am Mass 8:35am Rosary 9:00am Mass 5:30pm Children s Choir 6:00pm Carnival 7:00pm Prayer Service 7:00pm Knights of Columbus Open House 7:30pm Adult Choir

3 St. Mary Catholic Church May 14, 2017 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Inspired, Monica followed Augustine to Rome, where she learned he had left for Milan. She continued her pursual and eventually came upon St. Ambrose, who helped her convert Augustine to Christianity following his seventeen year resistance. Augustine later wrote a book called Confessions, in which he wrote of Monica's habit of bringing "to certain oratories, erected in the memory of the saints, offerings of porridge, bread, water and wine." When Monica moved to Milan, a bishop named Ambrose told her wine "might be an occasion of gluttony for those who were already given to drink," so she stopped preparing wine as offerings for the saints. Augustine wrote: "In place of a basket filled with fruits of the earth, she had learned to bring to the oratories of the martyrs a heart full of purer petitions, and to give all that she could to the poor so that the communion of the Lord's body might be rightly celebrated in those places where, after the example of his passion, the martyrs had been sacrificed and crowned." After a period of six months, Augustine was baptized in the church of St. John the Baptist at Milan. The pair were led to believe they should spread the Word of God to Africa, but it the Roman city of Civitavecchia, Monica passed away. Augustine recorded the words she imparted upon him when she realized death was near. "Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know what there is now left for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled." She was buried at Ostia, and her body was removed during the 6th century to a hidden crypt in the church of Santa Aurea in Osta, near the tomb of St. Aurea of Ostia. In 1430, Pope Martin V ordered her relics to be brought to Rome and many miracles were reported to have occurred along the way. Later, Cardinal d'estouteville built a church to honor St. Augustine called the Basilica di Sant'Agostino, where her relics were placed in a chapel to the left of the high altar. Her funeral epitaph survived in ancient manuscripts and the stone it was originally written on was discovered in the church of Santa Aurea in Douglas Boin translated the tablet's Latin to read: "Here the most virtuous mother of a young man set her ashes, a second light to your merits, Augustine. As a priest, serving the heavenly laws of peace, you taught [or you teach] the people entrusted to you with your character. A glory greater than the praise of your accomplishments crowns you both Mother of the Virtues, more fortunate because of her offspring." The city of Santa Monica, California is named after Monica, as were the "weeping" springs outside the city. St. Monica Prayer St. Monica, I need your prayers. You know exactly how I'm feeling because you once felt it yourself. I'm hurting, hopeless, and in despair. I desperately want my child to return to Christ in his Church but I can't do it alone. I need God's help. Please join me in begging the Lord's powerful grace to flow into my child's life. Ask the Lord Jesus to soften his heart, prepare a path for his conversion, and activate the Holy Spirit in his life. Amen. So, if you have a husband, wife, child or relative that needs to come back to the Church, who is dealing with drugs or alcohol, who is in with the wrong crowd or just not living up to their potential, goodness or understanding, we can bring those people to St. Monica who through her prayers who brought about miracles in her family and can do the same for ours. Solano Casey was a capuchin friar so reluctant to theology that he urged his superiors to stop him from preaching. Yet he was capable of responding to those who knocked on the door of the New York convent and show God s mercy in its fullness. Along with the great figures of Cardinal Van Thuân and Dalla Costa, stands this humble American friar among the new decrees of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints approved by the Pope. Francis has authorized for the Capuchin religious the promulgation of the miracle decree, which opens the way for the beatification. Born Bernard Francis Casey in 1870 in an Irish family from Wisconsin, young Barney had done several jobs including being a workmanship and tramway driver when, at age of 21 he entered the Milwaukee s diocesan seminary. However, his path to the priesthood did not turn out to be that simple. None of his superiors questioned his piety, but Latin and theological studies were not his thing. Reason why, the diocesan seminary did not consider him suitable for priesthood. 4 FATHER COREY S EPISTLE Hence, the choice to enter Detroit in the Capuchin friars a year later and in 1897 he took the name of Fr. Francis Solano, after the great evangelizer from Peru who loved the poor and gathered them to Prayer with the violin, the same instrument that young Casey loved to play. Despite the fact that even the Capuchins had doubts over his admission to priesthood, in 1904, Francis Solano was finally ordained, yet just as a simple priest, to whom not to entrust the tasks of preaching and confessing. Father Solane, who had always replied to all objections by putting his life in God s hands, did not take it as a downgrading, but as an invitation to cultivate holiness through humility. And he did it in Harlem, the New York border district, to which he was assigned. He remained there for twenty years doing the simplest tasks of a doorman. However, answering to all those who rang the bell of the institution became the ministry of his life. At the door, he would meet people of every age and condition; women and men who often carried hardships and sufferings, asking for advice and prayers. Everyone knew that Father Casey would have welcomed everyone at any time of day or night. After twenty years in New York, between Harlem and Yonkers, he was transferred to Detroit, in the Convent of St. Bonaventure, where he continued to carry out the ministry of concierge. Many people in New York and Detroit often visited him to thank him for a given advice or for a prayer that had been answered. Thus, on the advice of his Provincial Father, he began to record on a booklet those little or great graces received by the people he met. During his life, Solano filled seven of those booklets with more than six thousand entries. Blessings that he always attributed to God s mercy only, asking in return only to love and help the Church missions. He died on July 31, 1957 after a short illness. Sixty years later, the hunger for holiness of this simple friar remains lively in the United States. A prayer for Mothers: God our creator, we come before You and lift up in prayer all mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, godmothers, and mothers to be who gave the gift of life. We give you thanks for their presence, talents and gifts which they share in our church, society and world. May all mothers know of Your loving and gentle presence and may they always turn towards You in times of joy, sorrow and glory. We ask this in Your Name. Amen. Contact Name: Phone: AROUND THE DIOCESE DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY The fight for religious freedom is not a Catholic issue, not a Jewish issue, not an Orthodox, Mormon, or Muslim issue. It is an American issue. The passage of the Affordable Care Act has imposed dangerous implications on all religions. If we allow the government to have the final say on what type of health care coverage a religious organization must provide, we are basically enabling them to interfere in all religious liberty concerns in areas such as immigration and humanitarian services. Let us pray that as lawmakers make changes to the current mandate that it return the safeguards that protect religious freedom in the Constitution of the United States.
