Dear Parishioners, Our current homily series is on how we are called to use our strengths to serve God. I would like to share an excerpt from the book Living Your Strengths that I find very helpful. What is a Strength? To begin to know and live your strengths, you need to understand what a strength is. A strength is the ability to provide consistent, near-perfect performance in a given activity. This ability is a powerful, productive combination of talent, skill and knowledge. The key to building a strength is first to identify your dominant themes of talent, and produce a strength by complementing those talents with knowledge and skill related to the task. Talents are naturally recurring patterns of thought, feeling, or behavior that can be productively applied. Unlike skills and knowledge, talents naturally exist within you and cannot be acquired. They are your inborn predispositions. They are the things that you do instinctively and that naturally give you satisfaction. What does a talent look like? A talent can be the natural tendency to be competitive, pick up on the emotions of others, thrive under pressure, make others laugh, enjoy puzzles, recognize uniqueness in others, or envision and clearly articulate a future scenario. Skills are basic abilities to move through the fundamental steps of a task. They can be acquired through formal or informal training. Once you ve acquired the skills necessary for a given activity, you have the ability to perform its steps at a base-level ability. What does a skill look like? A skill can be the ability to perform the fundamental steps of adding and subtracting, processing a customer s insurance claim, using software to prepare a presentation, giving a patient an injection, preparing a lesson plan, or checking someone into a hotel. Knowledge is what you know. You can acquire knowledge through education or training. It may be factual knowledge, like the words of a foreign language, the books of the Bible, software features, or the table of periodic elements. It also may be experiential knowledge, which isn t taught in classrooms or manuals. What does knowledge look like? Your knowledge could tell you how to deal with an upset customer, how to cope with jobrelated stress, what time Mass is held, the FAA s safety regulations, what part of a lesson your students find most difficult, the fastest route to the grocery store, or why and how Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation. Talents are transferable from situation to situation. The hotel desk clerk who instinctively knows just the right way to make a guest feel welcome and at home would most likely be an excellent greeter. Skills and knowledge can be acquired, but they will not significantly help you unless they enhance a talent. The fundamental building block of any strength is talent. When you enhance a talent by adding the right skills and knowledge, you have created a strength. We give glory to God when we take the natural talents we are born with, and build on them to create strengths and use those strengths for the sake of the Kingdom. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL ANNUAL BAKE SALE Sponsored by the Council of Catholic Women, will be February 6 and 7 proceeds will go to repairing the drainage system and landscaping around the St. Gabriel statue outside the parish office. All parish members are welcome to donate a variety of items from cookies, candy, cake, bars, brownies, breads, cinnamon rolls, kolache, muffins, coffee cake or your favorite family treat. Bake items or package the items in disposable containers and mark clearly if items contain nuts, peanuts or peanut butter. Drop donations off at St. Joseph campus social hall after 3:00pm on Saturday, February 6 or before 8:30am Mass on Sunday, February 7 and before 10:30am Mass at St. John campus Community Room. January 24, 2016 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Book of Nehemiah 8:2-4a,5-6,8-10, 1 st Letter of St Paul to Corinthians 12:12-30, Gospel of Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 We are one body, all of us members of the Body of Christ. The human body is the perfect metaphor to illustrate team work. If one small part is not working, carrying its load, doing its part, we may become sick and unable to function. Each body part has its own reason for being and its function cannot be provided by any of the other parts. The ear cannot be an eye but both are needed. The hand cannot be a foot but both are needed. When a part is missing, we can perhaps get by but it is not the same. As Paul states, If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it... Is one part more important than the other? Not in the grand scheme of things. In this reading to the Corinthians Paul gets rid of hierarchical thinking. No one is better or more important in the Body of Christ. We cannot turn to the elderly person next to us in church and say we do not need you. What would happen to us if all the prayers the elder person would have offered were not prayed? We cannot turn to the teenager and say you are not needed. Do we think for a minute that we can truly live without the energy and enthusiasm of the young? We cannot turn to the unborn child and say you are not needed. What might that child have contributed? The Body of Christ, just as the human body, only works well if all parts are present and working together for their intended purpose. It takes all of us; old and young, strong and weak. The Spirit of God is the great equalizer. So how do we know what is our part to play in this Body of Christ? What gifts and strengths do we bring to the table? What is the Spirit calling us to? Just like the human body each part is made for a specific purpose, so too you have been called to serve a specific purpose in the Body of Christ. It is not that difficult to recognize the gifts you have to share. They are most recognizable in the task that comes most easily to you, you do it without much thought or practice and it brings you joy. You may not be fully aware of your gift but you know it when you practice it. For example you love talking and meeting new people; be a church greeter. You are a good listener; be a Befriender. You love to pray the rosary; say one every day for the parish. Singing fills your heart; join the choir. You love helping others; be an altar server. We the Body of Christ need you! We suffer without you, but we also rejoice with you when you use your gifts to build the Body of Christ. Reflection Questions: What gifts and strengths do you bring to the table? What are you good at? What comes easily to you? How do you see the Body of Christ suffering at St. Gabriel the Archangel Church? What gifts are missing? What can you do about this? What one gift will you share with the Body of Christ during Lent; or during the year ahead? What is the Spirit calling you to? 5

6 Youth Formation, School & Parish News FAITH FORMATION NEWS MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH SNOW TUBING OUTING Saturday, February 20, 1:00-4:30pm, $16.00 All 5 th 8 th graders and their friends are invited to a fun afternoon of swooshing down the slopes at Elm Creek Park on February 20. We ll meet at St. John s campus (main church doors) at 1:00pm and then carpool to the slopes. Cost is only $16.00 and includes admission and tube rental. Extra money for concessions is optional (but recommended!). You must pre-register for this event by February 16 so enough drivers and chaperones can be arranged. SENIOR HIGH YOUTH SERVICE OPPORTUNITY Saturday, March, 5 12:30-4:00pm Come play with the children at Mary s Place in Minneapolis! Mary s Place is a transitional housing facility for families and is connected with Mary Jo Copeland s Sharing and Caring Hands ministry. We will supervise the indoor playroom and lead some additional organized activities for the children who live there. Any 9 th 12 th grader who is interested in this opportunity should sign up by February 29; to sign up, turn in a permission slip OR call/ Cindy to let her know you re coming ( , cnovak@stgabrielhopkins.org). ATTENTION ALL ALTAR SERVERS There will be a meeting on Sunday, February 7, 2016 after the 10:30am Mass at St. John campus. It is very important that you attend this meeting. The meeting is for ALL SERVERS and those wanting to become servers. If you are in the 4 th grade or older, you are eligible to be an alter server. CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL The 2016 Catholic Services Appeal will kickoff next week! In this Year of Mercy, we should remember Jesus taught us the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim) III Domingo Ordinario C 24 de enero del 2016 LA VIDA DEL CUERPO DE CRISTO Algunas de las imágenes más conocidas y queridas de san Pablo se encuentran en los pasajes de la primera carta a los corintios que hemos escuchado la semana pasada y hoy: los muchos dones de un mismo Espíritu y los muchos miembros que componen el Cuerpo de Cristo. Pocos pasajes de la Sagrada Escritura resumen con mayor claridad cómo las vocaciones cristianas trabajan en colaboración. A diferencia de otros escritos de san Pablo, producto de las convenciones sociales y religiosas de su época, estos nos permiten mirar nuestra propia vida y la vida de los que están a nuestro alrededor para discernir los dones, la vocación que el Espíritu Santo nos ha dado para el bien de todos. Fue un sábado del mes de febrero, cuando Alejandro Colindres, un joven humilde labrador, y Jorge Martínez, un niño de ocho años, la encontraron. Según la tradición estos llegaron cansados a la quebrada del Piligüín. Acostándose sobre el suelo, Alejandro sintió lo que le parecía una piedra en su espalda. Por más que intentaba arrojarla lejos, cuando se acostaba sentía la misma piedra. Por fin en lugar de tirarla, la puso en su mochila y al amanecer descubrió que no era piedra sino una pequeña imagen de María (6.5 cm.) con rostro indígena tallada en madera. En 1780 se le construyó un templo y en 1796 se registró su primer milagro.
