Sicheneder, G. Tangney Stewardship-Sharing Our Treasure with the Community SOJOURNER PROJECT IS THE MAY RECIPIENT! The Charitable Giving collection held on May 9 and 10, 2015, will support the Sojourner Shelter which is a secure residence for women who are experiencing abuse or threats of abuse, by their partners. Sojourner Shelter opened its doors in 1979 in Hopkins and is a place where women and their children can be safe while they receive information, resources, legal advocacy and one-to-one support and information. Children are assessed for physical, emotional, or other forms of abuse so the proper services can be provided or referrals made to the appropriate resources. Sojourner houses about women and their children every night. This being an emergency shelter, the average stay is 6-8 weeks. They provide all meals prepared in their commercial kitchen and families eat together. Services provided by the shelter include: safe temporary crisis housing, 24 -hour crisis phone line, help with legal, medical, housing and (limited) financial needs, support groups, life skills groups, and parenting resources support. They also provide education and prevention work to youth around dating violence, safety and unhealthy vs. healthy relationships. They have a marriage and family licensed therapist on staff and provide a community support group. They hired an advocate that is focusing on transition work so that women who leave the shelter or programs will have a resource that is checking in with them. This Mother s Day, please remember the mothers and their children at Sojourner Shelter. Please be generous. Following Mass in the community room, there will be a presentation by the Hopkins police department on summer safety tips. After the presentation, St. Therese Southwest will treat everyone to a lunch. 2

Dear Parishioners, I traveled to Rome just after Easter with three of my 14 classmates to commemorate the 10 th anniversary of our ordination to the priesthood. Many of you have asked to hear about it, so I thought I would share some stories with you here. The funniest thing that happened was at the Wednesday audience at St. Peter s Basilica. Every Wednesday, the pope gives a reflection to the faithful, and thousands of people gather in the square in front of the basilica to hear and see him. Before the reflection, he s driven around through the crowd, stopping every once in a while to kiss babies and whatnot. A custom has developed that if you buy a white zucchetto (the skull cap that the pope wears) and bring it to the audience, he ll stop and trade you for the one on his head. My classmate, Fr. Erich Rutten, decided to give this a try. We didn t arrive early enough to be right up against the barricade, so Fr. Rutten tried to make his way closer and disappeared into the crowd with the zucchetto he had bought the day before (about $65). The pope passed the three of us by, and we watched to see if he would stop around where we thought Fr. Rutten was. He wasn t stopping, and suddenly we saw a white zucchetto fly through the air and land in the pope s vehicle! The pope kept on going. Fr. Rutten eventually made his way back to us, and told us he wasn t able to get close to the barricade, so he gave the zucchetto to a four-year-old who was in the front row to try to make the swap. The family didn t speak English and Fr. Rutten doesn t speak Italian, and apparently he didn t get across what he wanted them to do. We may have teased him a bit during the rest of the trip. Other highlights include celebrating Mass at the various churches in Rome. As a priest, you can go into any sacristy and request to celebrate Mass at one of the side altars. This is common, so they re usually ready with vestments, sacred vessels, bread and wine, and even liturgical books in many different languages. We were able to celebrate Mass at the four major basilicas in Rome, inside the catacombs (ancient Christian underground cemeteries), and at the cathedrals in Siena, Orvieto, and Assisi. We took a guided Scavi tour, which is a tour of the excavations beneath St. Peter s Basilica that took place in the 1940 s that confirmed St. Peter was buried there. We also took a guided tour of some wineries when we were in Siena, which is in the Chianti region. I was ready to come home by the end of the two weeks. The parish was always first in my prayers at the different churches we visited. Vacation Bible School needs children and volunteers. Without enough volunteers fewer activities and less fun. (information current as of ) Together we can do so much more than each of us can individually Mainstreet Project Update This Saturday (4/25), Century link will be continuing to work on relocation of fiber optic lines which will keep 14 th Avenue access closed to Mainstreet during the day. Mainstreet will remain open to eastbound traffic during their work. Next Tuesday, closure of Mainstreet at 14th Avenue for storm sewer construction will require a proposed one-day detour of Mainstreet traffic to 1st Street north. This construction will not affect our weekday or weekend Mass schedule but watch for closures that may affect your travel. The City, along with Bolton & Menk, the consulting engineers on this project, has developed a project website: to provide project updates. Las palabras de Juan nos llegan hoy cuando el pasaje del Evangelio nos presenta con la gran imagen del viñedo y las ramas. Jesús usa la imagen como un aviso a los que se han empezado a distanciar de la senda del Señor. Esto sucede cuando amamos a Dios y a otros con palabras o dichos y no con la verdad y las obras. Qué significa para nosotros permanecer en Cristo? El Señor nos da un ejemplo con la extensión de la metáfora. Si permanecemos en él, daremos mucho fruto. Jesús añade que los sarmientos (ramas) que permanecen en él, dan mucho fruto. Según la agricultura, la vid es una parra, es decir, una planta perenne de ramas frondosas. Una parte importante de la vid son las hojas. Es obvio que una vid tiene hojas, pero Jesús no las menciona, prefiere enfocarse en los sarmientos. Las partes de la vid son las raíces, tronco, sarmientos, hojas, flores y fruto. Según esta división Jesús sería el tronco, pero él dice ser la vid completa. Esta es una imagen de la unidad que Jesús quiere entre sus seguidores. Recordemos que Jesús celebra la Última Cena con sus discípulos. La comunidad de discípulos unidos a Jesús formamos la vid. Los sarmientos o ramas conducen agua y minerales a las hojas, flores y frutos, y son útiles en tanto estén unidos a la vid. Lo mismo vale de los cristianos, discípulos de Jesús.
