Emmanuel: God is with us. That is something that we sometimes forget. There are many situations in the world, many situations in our lives when we might be moved to ask, Where is God? What is He doing? Does He love us or not? Is He with us or not? Whenever the innocent suffer, especially the young; whenever evil seems to be winning, and following God s will leads to persecution; whenever tragedies occur that God could have prevented, people will ask, Is God really with us? It is because of those times when we can t see how God is with us that we have to continually remind ourselves what God has done for us. In order to save us from our sins, God entered into this fallen world that we helped create. He came and lived among the evil, he came and lived among the suffering and death and he conquered it. He came and said, No more. The days of evil are numbered. The power of sin will come to an end. My Kingdom is at hand, and I will return to usher it in once and for all. Suffering, death, hate, violence, sickness, loneliness, despair these will come to an end. I am here to tell you that Emmanuel. Your God is with you. The trouble is, we are in that stage of history where the Kingdom of God is already here, but is also not yet here. The Kingdom of God has begun because Christ died and rose again, but it will not come to its fulfillment until He returns in glory. So we live in a time when we know that God is with us, but suffering and death are still with us, too, and we still experience those consequences. The question isn t whether or not God is with us; the question is whether or not we are with God. God became one of us, to save us from our sins, and we left Him there. We abandoned Him, to die alone on a Cross, rejected by the ones he loved. And we reject Him again every time we sin. Every time we choose our own will over God s, every time we cause others to suffer, we are saying, Not yet, Lord. I choose sin over your Kingdom. Now is not the time for your will, it is the time for mine. Now is not the time for your kingdom to come. And yet God continues to be with us. He continues to be Emmanuel, so great is His love for us. And our response to this love must be praise and adoration. Our response must be love of our neighbor. When we feed the hungry, when we welcome the stranger, when we buy gifts for families we ve never met, when we build homes for people on the other side of the world, we are saying, Yes Lord, now. Let thy kingdom come now. May we be with you as you are with us. Let us do our best to be with God as He is with us. Let us work to bring about God s kingdom. Let us support each other, keep each other focused on the goal, pray for each other, always remembering that God is with us. Fr. Liekhus THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT TO CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL On behalf of Archbishop Nienstedt and the Archdiocese of Saint Paul & Minneapolis we thank you for your support of the needed work of the Catholic Services Appeal in This year a portion of all your donations was returned to St Gabriel the Archangel for Catholic formation, educational programs, and the needs of our Parish. 3

5 Parish News The gift of generosity This holiday season, we thank everyone who has supported St. Gabriel the Archangel this past year with their time, talent and financial contributions and look forward to support from all of our parishioners in the year ahead. If you need a convenient way to make regular offerings or if you plan to make an additional gift before the end of the year, we encourage you to look into our electronic giving options. As the pace of life speeds up, especially around the holidays, you may find electronic giving a most welcome way to make contributions. Please contact the parish office (952) for more information. Make a Year End Donation Please be advised that end-of-year donations, intended for the 2013 tax season, need to be either received at the parish by December 31 or postmarked via USPS before December 31. This holds true for donations received during Masses the final week of the year (Tuesday, December 31 and Wednesday, January 1). Any questions, please contact the parish office at (952) VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY AMICUS Amicus, now a part of the Volunteers of America - MN ( is a non-profit organization with over 45 years experience working with men and women who are incarcerated in Minnesota State prisons. There are just under 100 prisoners who are currently looking to be matched with a volunteer visitor like you. All volunteers attend a three-hour training/information session. The next one at the Amicus office is Monday, February 10, 2014, from 5:30-8:30pm at 3014 Fourth Avenue South, Minneapolis. A light meal is provided. After the session, if you re interested in becoming a volunteer visitor, Amicus will check your references and does an hour interview to get to know you so as to find the best match for you. Participants are matched by gender (i.e., men to men and women to women) and by whatever factors are important to both (religion, life experiences, interests, age, etc.). Volunteers commit to a one-hour visit per month and to forming a true friendship with their one-to-one match for a minimum of one year. Male volunteers have the choice of visiting prisoners in one of three state prisons: Stillwater (off Hwy. 36, in Bayport, MN), Oak Park Heights (about three miles south of the Stillwater prison) and Lino Lakes (north via 35w). Female volunteers can visit prisoners in the state prison in Shakopee. You also have the choice of visiting inmates who will be released within a year or longer-term inmates. Studies show that inmates who have an ongoing, positive one-to-one relationship with a community member are 40% less likely to offend again. To learn more, call parishioner Len Powell at (952) , a long-time visitor, or contact Chris Doege (pronounced Day ) the Amicus Adult Reentry Services Director at (612) or by at chris.doege@voamn. PARISH OFFICE PARISH OFFICE CLOSED The parish office will be closed on Tuesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 25 for the Christmas holiday. May the Christ child bring you peace and joy this Christmas season. Merry Christmas 5
6 Faith Formation & School News NO faith formation THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 22 No Sunday Morning Preschool or Sunday Evening Faith Formation this weekend. We wish all our parishioners a very blessed and faith-filled celebration of Christ s coming in our lives. CONGRATULATIONS! Two of our St. John's graduates, Maddie Schafer and Leif Anderson, were recently honored by Benilde-St. Margaret's school with the Red Knight Achiever Award for outstanding leadership and Christian service. The award honors 8 th grade Catholic junior high students from the western suburbs of the Twin Cities. Leif and Maddie were nominated by their teachers at Benilde-St. Margaret's where they are both 8 th graders. Congratulations Leif and Maddie! Keep up the good work! We are now accepting registrations for new children to join our Faith Formation program after the First of the Year. You can find the registration form at the Church entrances and on our parish website: stgabrielthearchangelcatholicchurch /documents/ff%20registration% 20Form% pdf Notre Dame Academy School News With the first NDA trimester behind them, our students have been working hard at learning in the classroom but also making room for Christ to come. This is time when their hearts are full of excitement and hope. In preparation for the Christmas season many activities have been taking place at NDA: The K-8 grades gave a beautiful Vocal & Band Christmas Concert on Thursday, December 19 as did the preschoolers with their very own performance. Grade 3, 4, and 5 students retold the Christmas story at Friday s prayer service. All performances were priceless, just as our Kindergartener s Nativity Play was on December 4. The students have been working very hard to make their programs extra special. On the behalf of the entire Grand Beginnings team, a HUGE thank you to all that helped the evening be a success. The night proved to be a financial success and was also a great time for parents, friends, staff and parishioners to come together and celebrate our school. Our K-4 students enjoyed their time shopping at the Christmas Boutique. The kids not only received first hand reallife math concepts but had fun buying items for their loved ones. The excitement of the season continued with Class Christmas Parties on Friday, December 20. The NDA students received an exciting visit from Bishop Piché from the Archdiocese of St. Paul & Minneapolis on Friday, December 6. Bishop Piché presided at the school Mass and then headed off to the classrooms to see with his very own eyes our amazing NDA students and talented staff in action. Congratulations to the following: The NDA Math League recently took fifth place at Minnetonka Middle School East. Many of our second graders participated in their first reconciliation. Eighth graders Tristan K. and Gaby C. were recognized with the Benilde St. Margaret's Red Knight Achiever Award. Several students represented NDA at the FIRST LEGO League in Minnesota on December 7. Save The Date: Catholic School s Week beings January 25, The week will include a couple of Blizzard BINGO nights, Historical Perspectives and many school-wide activities. SCHOOL CAFETERIA HELP NEEDED NDA has an opening in the School Cafeteria for 5 days per week/2 hours per day. Starting after the first of the year. This position could expand to 3 hours per day. 8 SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL Confesiones, domingos 12:30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm Pastor: Rev. No genera temor reverencial. LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Mal 3:1-4, 23-34; Sal 25 (24):4-5ab, 8-10, 14; Lc 1:57-66 Martes: 2 Sm 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Sal 89 (88):2-5, 27, 29; Lc 1:67-79 Miércoles: Vigilia: Is 62:1-5; Sal 89 (88):4-5, 16-17, 27, 29; Hch 13:16-17, 22-25; Mt 1:1-25 [18-25] Medianoche: Is 9:1-6; Sal 96 (95):1-3, 11-13; Ti 2:11-14; Lc 2:1-14 Alborada: Is 62:11-12; Sal 97 (96):1, 6, 11-12; Ti 3:4-7; Lc 2:15-20 Día: Is 52:7-10; Sal 98 (97):1-6; Heb 1:1-6; Jn 1:1-18 [1-5, 9-14] Jueves: Hch 6:8-10; 7:54-59; Sal 31 (30):3cd-4, 6, 8ab, 16bc, 17; Mt 10:17-22 Viernes: 1 Jn 1:1-4; Sal 97 (96):1-2, 5-6, 11-12; Jn 20:1a, 2-8 Sábado: 1 Jn 1:5 2:2; Sal 124 (123):2-5, 7b-8; Mt 2:13-18 Domingo: Sir 3:2-6, 12-14; Sal 128 (127):1-5; Col 3:12-21 [12-17]; Mt 2:13-15, This January, Make a Resolution That will Truly Change your Life.
