Liekhus, who is deployed to Korea; Justin Kemper deployed to Afghanistan, grandson of Orville & Maryann Kemper; John Kurtz, son of Kirsten & Hamilton Kurtz; Tony Weaver, son of Barb Weaver. I was baptized and raised at Saint Olaf s parish in downtown Minneapolis, and every once in a while, someone will ask me, Wouldn t it be great if you were assigned to Saint Olaf s? You could go back and be pastor at the parish where you grew up! Whenever someone asks me that, I think of this weekend s gospel. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. As much as I love my home parish and the people there, my answer is always, No, that would not be great, that would be very difficult. Of course, I m very comfortable there and am familiar with the people, and the people are familiar with me, but that s the problem. We re too familiar. They know me as little Jimmy, growing up in the pews, asking them for donations for the school marathon and falling asleep on my dad s shoulder during the homily. So it would be hard for them to see me as Fr. Liekhus, their spiritual father and someone who has responsibility in the parish, just as it was hard for the people of Nazareth in today s gospel. This problem is certainly not unique to priests. As counterintuitive as it may seem, often times it is the ones that we are closest to, the ones that we know the best, our family and friends, who are the ones it is most difficult to share our faith with, to give that witness to the truth. We can be very bold in our faith to those we are less familiar with, those with whom we do not have a long-term relationship. But when it comes to our family and friends, it s just different. It can be difficult to be that same person that same witness to Christ s saving truth. Part of the difficulty may be because we have not formed the habit of speaking about the faith with our families. Even in those families that are very faithful, that come to Mass every Sunday, and celebrate all the sacraments and volunteer their talents at the parish, there can be a discomfort when it comes to speaking about our faith. Honey, what do you appreciate most about our faith? Sweetie, I feel like praying with you. Children, what did you learn from the homily today? Perhaps these phrases are spoken all the time in your household, but perhaps not. Maybe it s different for you, but speaking for myself, it is the ones that I am closest to, my family and my friends, whom it can be the most difficult to talk to about my faith. It can be easier to preach the gospel to a roomful of people than to my own brother. It can be easier to speak the truth with love about the Church s moral teaching to a stranger in the confessional than to my best friend. And I think part of the reason it is easy to fall into that is because we are told by our culture that we have to compartmentalize our faith. Faith is private; it is personal, so just keep it to yourself. If you re in church, fine, do whatever, but don t talk to me about your faith, because it might sound like you re judging mine, or lack thereof. We can learn from an early age that to speak about our faith in public is to open ourselves up to being politely ignored, if not scolded. We can become conditioned to hesitate, to think twice before we share something about our faith. That attitude is hard to turn on and off, to the point where we don t feel comfortable talking about our faith to anyone, even to our loved ones. We become afraid that it will be received the way Jesus was received in his hometown, with hostility and anger. That is clearly not the way our Lord wants it. He has told us, If you deny me to others, I will deny you to my heavenly Father. I will close the door, and you will knock and say, Lord, let me in, and I will say, I do not know you. Depart from me. We must never be ashamed to confess our faith in Jesus, we must be proud to call ourselves disciples of Christ. That is why we have to be intentional in teaching our children that talking about and sharing their faith is good, it is normal, and that they should never be made to feel ashamed or embarrassed because of their faith. We must immerse them in our faith; we must engage them, talk to them, ask them what they think; help them understand, share with them our own faith. We must make it as natural as talking about what they did in school or how they did at their game. If it hasn t started yet, then it must start now. Let us grow comfortable speaking about our faith with our family and friends, so that we can all help each other grow in holiness. Fr. Liekhus 3

Thank you note from St. Josephs Home for Children When our parish communities reach out and assist us at St. Josephs Home for Children we feel especially gratified. Thank you sincerely for the hygiene products you provided for our children, our residents on Hope Street were most grateful. Christmas at St. Joseph s for Children was great fun for our children and would not be possible without the support of kind donors like you. Thank you for thinking about our children and helping to make Christmas special for them, your parish community is wonderful. Warmest regards, St. Josephs Home for Children What getting a Catholic Education means to me. I like that I am able to go to a Catholic School and get a Catholic education because I am able to talk about God, attend Mass on Wednesday, and that I can pray in the classroom. I like this because as a Catholic, I am able to stay connected with my religion, while at school. Also the classes are smaller, and you can get special attention. This is nice because if you need help in a subject you could set that up with the teacher. You can also do some extracurricular activities that you cannot do at a public school, like how St. John s does the musical. I like that we are able to do the musical because it can help many kids be more confident in themselves. St. John s has given me a great life experience. I came here in preschool and have been here ever since. In the years I ve been here I have made lifelong friends, friends I will never forget. And that s what getting a Catholic education means to me. By Anna, gr. 6 Where I go to school is a Catholic school. We have activities like attending school Mass on Wednesday. When we go to church we bow before entering the pew. We kneel down and say a prayer. We respond clearly. It makes the priest happy. We are proud to talk about God. It makes me feel good because I know I can share my love of God with others. I like to learn more about God in Religion class. Our small classes are great and I like to spend time with my best friends. We do a musical play every year. We also have Lego Robotics after school on Wednesday where I learn more about technology. We all receive special attention from excellent teachers and staff. Thank you Mom and Dad for sending me to St. John s. By Ethan, gr. 6 5

8 SAN JUAN EVANGELISTA Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm Pastor: Rev.
