Each year, near the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul on June 29, a special charitable collection is solicited from Catholics throughout the Roman Church. We receive a tithing envelope in our packet marked Peter s Pence and our contributions are intended for use by the pope in his worldwide humanitarian efforts. Dear Parishioners, On May 28, our local church had the joy of ordaining nine new priests for the archdiocese. This happened to be on the anniversary of my own ordination, so it was particularly moving for me to be at the Cathedral and celebrate their ordination with them. This vocation is a great gift, and I am grateful to God for calling me to it. Every single one of us has a vocation, a calling from our Lord. It s important to remember that God did not create us for a vocation, so that we could do something in particular for Him. God did not create me so I could be a priest, He did not create my parents so they could be married. God created us, all of us, for the simple reason that He loves us. He loves you. You are loved by God that alone is reason enough for your existence, that alone is the source of your worth and your dignity, apart from anything you do or accomplish in this life. But, because God is so madly in love with you, He does care what you do with your life. It s important to get that order right. God does not love you because of what you do. You are doing what I want you to do, therefore I love you. That s not it. God loves you, and so what you do matters to Him. And that makes sense. This is the same way in which parents love their children. You love them before they do anything, before they are even capable of doing anything. And it is because you love them that you care about what they do with their lives. God is the same way. And God, being that He is God, knows what will bring you fulfillment, what will bring you the most happiness. And God, being that He is God, also knows the way in which you can best cooperate with Him. And so we go to God and ask Him, Lord, you know all things, and you love me more than I can imagine. What do you want me to do? To what vocation are you calling me? How can I serve you best? We can be assured that the response will not be, Pfff, I don t care. Do what you want. Doesn t matter to me. No, when we are ready, God will call to us in the depths of our hearts, and hopefully we will recognize His voice, the way the sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd. God loves each of us, and knows what will bring us fulfillment. Let us all follow the voice of the Good Shepherd, and walk down the path on which He leads us. Fr. 5 Parish News June 5, 2016 Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 st Book of Kings 17:17-24, Letter of St. Paul to the Galatians 1:11-19, Luke 7:11-17 Archbishop Hebda stated recently in his installation mass homily that God s love is a game changer. It certainly was for this widow and her only son. Without the love and compassion of Jesus this woman would have been left with nothing, no way to make an income. She would have lost her only son whom she loved. Jesus just happened to be drawing near to the city gate when this funeral procession passed by. The gospel states, when the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her... he stepped forward. She did not need to approach Jesus and ask for anything, he approached her. He understood her sorrow and could not walk away from it. She may not have known anything about Jesus at this point, didn t know that she was in the presence of God. When her son was brought back to life the people proclaimed, God has visited his people. The message can t be much clearer than that. The report about Jesus spread, those who witnessed this moment and others like it, told others about it. To the point that Jesus had as many as 5000 people listening to him at one gathering as we heard in last week s reading of the Gospel. We never hear the rest of this story of how the widow and her son responded to Jesus. Did they go about their lives as though nothing had changed? Or did they settle back into their city and talk with anyone and everyone who came their way about this God-man who changed their lives? Or did they become one with the crowds that started to follow Jesus from town to town, wanting to see more, to be closer to the one who had given them back life. How would you respond? What would be the first thing you would do if you thought you had lost your life and Jesus helped you reclaim it? Evangelization is a big word but really all it means is being willing to talk about your personal experience of Jesus. God s love is indeed a game changer. How has the love of God changed your life? List some ways that you can begin, one step at a time, to talk with others about how knowing Jesus has changed your life. What makes you feel uncomfortable about evangelizing? How can you overcome these obstacles to proclaiming God s love? REORGANIZATION PLAN FILING The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis filed its Plan for Reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Court just over a week ago. It is a major step in the Archdiocese s commitment to protect children, establish a counseling fund for victims, and create a trust for those who have been harmed by people in the Church. In the back of the church there is a two-page Q and A that should be helpful in explaining why the Archdiocese filed Chapter 11 in January of 2015, where the process is now, and what happens going forward. It also addresses recent allegations that the Archdiocese failed to disclose all of its assets. Please continue to pray for all of those who have been harmed by the Church over the years and for their families. 5

6 Youth Formation, School & Parish News FAITH FORMATION NEWS at the back of the church. Sign up by June 15. SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES Children: Vacation Bible School is for you! Get signed up for this great week of faith and fun, June 27-July 1 (see other bulletin article for details). Middle School Youth: Faith Service Camp is for youth who are currently in grades 5-8. Service in the mornings, recreational activities in the afternoons, mixed with prayer and faith discussion to tie our service to our understanding of living our faith. Friends from outside the parish are welcome too! Camp takes place July and includes a trip to Valley Fair on July 22. See details on the registration materials at the back of the church or on the website (under Student Ministries ). Sign up by July 1. High School Youth: Peer Ministers are needed for our Faith Service Camp. Be a leader and mentor for the middle school youth. Applications are available on the website or Adults: Adult help is needed during Vacation Bible Camp AND Faith Service Camp (FSC). Let us know if you can help chaperone for all or part of a day.
