PARISH OFFICE NEWS OFFICE CLOSED The parish office will be closed on Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday, May 27 at 8:30am. Have a safe and enjoyable holiday. MEMORIAL DAY MASS Mass on Monday, May 26 will be at St. Margaret s Cemetery at 9:00am. Please bring chairs to sit on if you wish. In the event of inclement weather the Mass will be held in St. Joseph s Church. Directions to St. Margaret s Cemetery: South on Shady Oak Road; turn Left on Bren Road; then take the first right into the Cemetery entrance. 2

We are nearly ready to launch our Loaves & Fishes program in the social hall of St. Joseph campus. I am very grateful for all of the hard work that has gone into making this a reality, particularly from Rebekah Krotzer, Beth Schorle, Carla Sweeney and Joan Vesovich from the parish and Cathy Maes from Loaves & Fishes. Thank you so much for helping us follow Christ s command to give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, and welcome to the stranger. It has been a pleasant surprise to discover how much of a partner Loaves & Fishes will be with us. Their organization paid to have our kitchen and janitor s closet brought up to code, and they have set money aside for the upkeep of the social hall. For instance, with the increased traffic and use of the space, our chairs will probably need to be replaced sooner than they would have been otherwise. Loaves & Fishes will pay for that, with no cost to the parish. They have also hired a coordinator, Sarah Tomczyk, to be on site on the days when meals are served. Her job will be to make sure everything is taken care of, from supervising the volunteers when they arrive to making sure everything is put back the way it was found when she turns off the lights. I don t think we could have done this without the help of Loaves & Fishes, so I am grateful for their partnership. To start, we will open our doors to our guests on Mondays and Tuesdays, offering free dinner from 5:30 6:30pm to anyone who comes, starting on June 2. This is open to all, not just those who are in need, so if you just need a day when you don t have to prepare dinner, come on by. (That s my plan, anyway.) Our parish has committed to providing the volunteers on the third Monday of the month; on the other days, Loaves & Fishes is responsible for finding the volunteers from their network. If you would like to volunteer on our day, you can contact Deacon Branch at sweetbranc@aol.com. If you would like to volunteer on any of the other days, you can do so online at If we find that the need in our area is great and the volunteers are available, we may expand the program to Wednesdays and Thursdays as well. When the parish needs the social hall for the rummage sale and parish festival, we will either offer to-go dinners to those who come, or plan something else, like an outdoor barbecue. (It would do no good to tell people that we will be closed, as people would come anyway, and we don t want to send them away hungry.) Imagine if our parish became known in Hopkins as, the place you can go to be fed? Even more so, I hope that our parish becomes known as, the place you can go to encounter Christ. May 25, thSunday of Easter STEWARDS LIVE GOD S PLAN For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God s will, than for doing wrong. 1 Peter 3:17 The old line says if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything right! 5 Parish News THANK YOU FROM DEACON BRUCE ANDERSON With great joy in my heart, I would like to thank you for you warm welcome to the parish of Saint Gabriel and Minnesota. It has been a great joy to be with you and become part of the community and it is hard to believe that four years have passed. I would to thank Father Liekhus for his willingness to take on additional responsibilities of a seminarian. I would like to publicly acknowledge the members of my Teaching Parish Committee for generous donation of time and committee to help me in the program: John and Kay Case, Jack and Myra Underdahl, Denise and Patrick Hirl, Ricardo and Maria Torres, Juana Tapia and Kathy Tickle. They have been a great influence to me. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Margaret LeSage for her great service in informing me of parish events and for giving my history lessons on the parish and also for her genuine motherly love over the past four years. I would like to say it has been a great pleasure to serve alongside Father Liekhus, Deacon Darrel, Deacon Francis and the late Deacon James Murphy. The statues of St Gabriel the Archangel installed this fall at each of our campuses serve as a symbol of our Faith Community and connection between our campuses. We are grateful to those that have helped to fund these lasting symbols and need your help to collect the remaining $1,000 before landscaping can begin this spring. VBS DEADLINE! The deadline to register for our Vacation Bible School (VBS) is June 15, to ensure spots for our St. Gabriel's children. Cuando Pedro y Juan impusieron las manos en los que habían bautizado, recibieron el Espíritu Santo en el sacramento de la Confirmación. La lectura de la primera carta de Pedro, y el pasaje del Evangelio de Juan, consideran los resultados de nuestro bautismo y confirmación. Pedro nos recuerda que lo más probable es que tengamos que sufrir por nuestras creencias. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos habla claramente sobre el Espíritu Santo, llamándolo Defensor, que estará junto a nosotros para defendernos. De manera muy significativa, Jesús promete a sus discípulos y a todos nosotros, No los dejaré huérfanos. Nunca ha dejado a sus seguidores huérfanos.
