There are many in our community who are not financially able to provide the necessary food for their families. The food collected will be distributed by the Interfaith Food Pantry. The donation collection will go from January 19, 2019 to March 16, More than 100 people in Elgin alone are homeless and they would greatly appreciate anything the St. Laurence Catholic Parishioners could provide for them. In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitality when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, candles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. 4 School News - Wendy Kelly Kid s Corner Congratulations Pack 17 had their Pinewood Derby on Saturday, January 19, in the school cafeteria. A great time was had by all. The Cub Scouts built and painted their cars. All the cars were well done and looked great. 5 LEVANTAMIENTO CELEBRATION: One of the traditions of the Hispanic culture occurs on the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord when the images of the Christ Child Jesus are solemnly put away to close the Christmas season. It is a practice to bring these images to be blessed before they are returned to a place of honor in the home. Our celebration of this tradition will be held at a special Vigil Mass at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, the 1st of February. Refreshments will follow in the cafeteria downstairs. All are welcome. People are gathered around Jesus, among them there are Pharisees and scribes, everybody wants to listen Jesus, but not everybody believes in him.

However, a group of friends, it does not specify how many (it may be 2 or 4), take him up to the roof of the place, dig a hole through the roof, and lower him down right in front of Jesus.

Sometimes those gathered around him become an obstacle that prevents us to get closer to him. Or it may be that we sometimes become an obstacle to others as they want to meet the Lord.

To meet Jesus sometimes is difficult, but not impossible, especially if we have friends like those in the gospel.

What attitudes within the church make it harder to meet Jesus? And what aspects of my behavior make difficulty the path faith of others?
