3 Parish News Dear Parishioners, This weekend is the video for the annual Catholic Services Appeal. As a people, the archdiocese pools together our gifts of treasure in order to serve in ways that no one parish could on its own. For example: Please pray for those in nursing homes, the families of the sick, caregivers, the military and their families, and for the following: Paula Beachune, Arlene Beers, Art Bell, Nancy Bishop, Ron Bisson, Dr. Dennis Clifford, Mark Clifford, Colleen Dickinson, Marie Edquist, Helen Eisel, Lucy Erhard, Sandra Frost, Adrian Vela Garay, Fr. Ralph Goman, Lu Gragert, Dianne Hummel, Jennifer Troast- Jelinek, Lucille Jones, Luke Julien, Mary Lou Keller, Evelyn Kerber, Barb Kok, Teresa Lucken, Barbara Mackintosh, Pat Malinowski, Sr. Agnes Martinka, Tali Montoya, Sandy Muschenheim, John Novak, Jackie and Mary Olafson, Robert Parker, Alice Paulsrud, Elsie June Phillips, Bernie Reid, Mardie Rydell, Kathleen Sawyer, Jean Schwappach, Loraine Schwinn, Mary Seurer, Jeanne Sheck, Sandy Sperrazza, Gil Stifter, Jim & Ranee Sulfridge, Dario Vizcarra Tapia, Geri VanLith, Mrs. John Vilipski, Elias Youngblom, and Regis Yunker. The Deceased: Please pray for the repose of the souls of Genevieve Sheats and Anne Shute and pray for their family and friends who mourn them. I am Monica, and I have a 14-year-old daughter Colleen, who has Down Syndrome. My daughter fully participates and thrives in the sacramental life of our Catholic faith because of the Archdiocesan Outreach for Persons with Disabilities. Thankfully, our Archdiocese provides sacramental preparation for anyone with a disability. My daughter frequently has her confession heard, has been confirmed, and is now herself a volunteer for events held for the disabled, including the Archbishop s Annual Mass for the Persons with Disabilities. All of this is possible because of the archdiocese s support of this program. Thank you to all the donors of the Catholic Services Appeal Foundation. Many vital ministries are funded, in part, by the CSA. Please be generous. Fr. Liekhus HEALING MASS Father Jim Livingston will celebrate a Healing Mass on Tuesday, February 16, at 7:30pm in St. Joseph campus church. Please join us for the Rosary and Mass. Direct questions to Barb at (952) A Families Moving Forward (FMF) Invitation Lent is just around the corner. In preparation for the season when we are considering things to give up or better yet, things to do, I would like you to consider volunteering to help when we host FMF the week of March 13. There are many ways one can help. There is a need for people to prepare the bedrooms and take them down when the week is over. We need families to greet our guests when they arrive each evening and to stay and have supper with them. After supper these same families play with the children so the parents can have some quiet time if they choose. Yes, of course, we need people to prepare and serve suppers and clean up afterwards. Let s not forget breakfast. The breakfast is light, so just two or three can handle that. If you are good at sleeping, we have just a position for you: two adults come in at 8:00pm and are there in case help is needed during the night. Besides sleeping they need to wake the guests at the assigned time. They are free to leave around 6:00am, and yes there will be coffee for you. There will be a chance to sign up to help after all the Masses the weekend of February 27/28. Consider FMF as a Lenten commitment. Deacon Francis Tangney ST. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL ANNUAL BAKE SALE Sponsored by the Council of Catholic Women, will be next weekend February 6 and 7. See the enclosed flyer for details. If you have any questions, please contact Pat at (952)

5 Parish News CATHOLIC SERVICES APPEAL The 2016 Catholic Services Appeal will kickoff next week! In this Year of Mercy, we should remember Jesus taught us the Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. These Corporal Works of Mercy are precisely what the 17 Collective Ministries of the Archdiocese accomplish. The 17 collective ministries served by the Catholic Services Appeal are: American Indian Ministry Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women (ACCW) Campus Ministry Newman Center Campus Ministry Saint Paul s Outreach Catholic Charities Deaf Ministry Elementary Schools Evangelization and Catechesis High Schools Hospital Chaplains Latino Ministry Marriage, Family and Life Parishes Prison Chaplains Saint John Vianney College Seminary The Saint Paul Seminary Venezuelan Mission Please begin to prayerfully consider your upcoming gift to the Catholic Services Appeal. Please visit CSAF s new website at to learn more about the over 200 programs of the Ministries and the many thousand in need who are served. January 31, Forth Sunday of Ordinary Time, Year C Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19; 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13; Luke 4:21-30 In today s first reading Jeremiah is told to stand strong. The message is clear: it is not easy to be a prophet for the Lord! At the same time Jeremiah is told that God will be with him through it all. The second reading is often read at weddings. The message clear for all of us: if what we do is not done in love, we accomplish nothing---love endures. The second reading is also St Paul s beautiful explanation of Christian love. Paul is explaining just how God loves each of us. God s love is unconditional! God will love us regardless of how we respond to that love. Yes, God is hurt when we do not respond to God s love, but the love keeps coming. It is a love that we must all strive to exhibit in our interactions with people. Imagine for a moment loving as God loves! If we love as God does, it follows that we forgive as God does. Think of the joy that would bring to your family and friends. God s love was so great that God sent his only son to die for us! While we can t match that gift, we can strive to love more deeply. There is another kind of love---conditional love. I will love you as long as you do the things for me that I want. This is a hollow love. It is not patience, it is not kind, it does not forgive---it does not endure! We need to strive to have unconditional love. Then in today s gospel, Jesus opening sentence is the same as the closing sentence from last week s gospel. He is telling the people of his home town that he is the one foretold by the prophet Isaiah. He is the one to bring glad tidings to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Jesus neighbors may not know him as the Son of God just yet but they needed to know that was a prophet. The people in Nazareth had heard of the great things Jesus had been doing in other towns and they came out to see and hear him. But in the end it was too much; he is just Jesus the boy next door. He was the carpenter s son. They cannot accept that he was more than a carpenter. Jesus points out to his neighbors that through out history people rejected the prophets the Lord sent. The people in Nazareth were rejecting Jesus, just as had happened through out history. And yes, they were set to kill him. Have you experienced conditional love? How did it feel? Have you experienced unconditional love? How did that feel? Can we see Jesus as all Isaiah prophesied? If we can, then we are seeing the Messiah. FIRST FRIDAY February 5 8:00pm THE NOCTURNAL ADORATION SOCIETY commences its adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Prayer leaders for the hour are: 8-9 Marilyn Johnson 9-10 Ken & Eileen Quigley Jerry & Sue Techam 5

8 SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL Confesiones, domingos 12:30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm Pastor: Rev.
