The Deceased: Please pray for the repose of the soul of Michael Line, and pray for his family and friends who mourn him. Dear Parishioners, In this weekend s gospel, we hear what was probably a turning point in Jesus relationship with the authorities in Jerusalem. Jesus came up to the Temple, and was horrified by what he saw. It had become no different than a marketplace. Sheep and oxen were roaming about, not outside the temple where they belonged, but inside the Temple area. Money changers were seated where people were supposed to be worshipping. These things had their place they were necessary for people coming to offer sacrifice, but that place wasn t inside the Temple. Imagine someone walking up and down the aisles during Mass selling concessions. That s what Jesus encountered when he came to the Temple. The problem was that the religious authorities approved. This was big business for them. So when Jesus drove out the animals and overturned the tables, he was not just upsetting a few salespeople; he was upsetting the people with power and influence who ran the Temple. The cleansing of the Temple was the event that really put into motion the eventual crucifixion of Jesus. And Jesus knew it. He knew full well that he would be upsetting some very powerful people by defending his Father s house. He knew he would be putting his own life at risk, that it would be much safer for him to look the other way, or perhaps try to find some compromise with the authorities. But there were some things that weren t negotiable, and his Father s house was one of them. When he saw how the authorities had changed the Temple into a marketplace, he was moved by righteous anger to drive them out, whatever the consequences might be for his own life. This is a different side to Jesus, one that we may not normally associate with him. We may think of Jesus more in the role of teacher, or healer, or even as the meek lamb who was led to the slaughter on the cross. And Jesus was these things. When we ask ourselves what would Jesus do, it is probably these aspects of Jesus that come to mind, and that s ok. There are times when we are called to teach patiently. There are times when we are called to bring God s healing, compassionate presence into someone s life. There are even times when we are called to be meek in the face of persecution. But there were other times when Jesus was a fighter. When he saw oppression, hypocrisy, false teaching from religious authorities, the profanation of the Temple, Jesus got angry. Not a wrathful anger that sought revenge; Jesus didn t lose control of his temper or lash out unjustly. But he did have a righteous anger. He permitted himself to get worked up when he recognized that something wasn t right, an injustice was being committed and someone needed to speak against it. We need to get angry at these situations; again, not in the sense that we yell and stomp and be generally unpleasant to be around, but in the sense of recognizing that a situation is unacceptable, and we will not sit idly by without doing something. So in the face of injustice, when we ask ourselves what would Jesus do, we should remember this Gospel. Jesus would get angry. Jesus would do something to put a stop to the injustice, even if it meant fashioning a whip out of cords and overturning some tables. And he would do so even if it cost him his own life. Jesus didn t make any friends when he cleansed the Temple. It was not the popular thing to do. But it was the right thing to do. Fr. Liekhus 3

8 SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL Confesiones, domingos 12:30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm Pastor: Rev.
