We humans are very much inclined to look outward at others behavior first and make judgements. The disciples are no different from us. They run to Jesus and complain that someone is trying to do something that they should be doing instead. They judge the person as not one of us. They try to let the other know that they should stop what they are doing. For the disciples, it is all about correcting the others behavior. How often do we look at someone else and judge them and try to stop their behavior because we know more than they do? Jesus seems to quickly put an end to this thinking of ours. Just because the person is not one of us does not mean they are wrong. Are they doing good work in Jesus s name? Maybe we have to widen our thinking and widen our circle of who is a disciple? Jesus states: For whoever is not against us is for us. Moses is trying to point out a similar message to Joshua in the first reading. Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets! Moses would like the Lord to bestow his spirit on all the people. In the second part of this Gospel reading, Jesus turns our attention from an outward, looking at others to an inward looking at ourselves. Is our own house in order? How am I doing at being the type of disciple that Jesus Extraordinary Ministers: P. Bell, R. Bisson, Jr., B. Carlson, D. Carlson, S. Clark B. Clemen, J. Clemen Usher: P. Are my personal actions leading myself and others to sin and move away from God or are my personal actions leading myself and others toward God? Jesus challenges us to look at our own behavior rather than the behavior of others. The Gospel goes on to talk about getting rid of anything that stands in the way of our discipleship. Of course the cutting off of limbs is not meant to be taken literally! Jesus is trying to strongly drive home the point that anything that is getting in the way of our discipleship needs to be excised. We may need to perform metaphorical surgery to get rid of some habit, to abandon some pleasure, or to cut out something that has become very dear to us in order to be fully obedient to the will of God in our lives. Our conscience will usually give us a clue as to what this work is for us. This is not something that anyone else can do for us; we must do the work ourselves. We must recognize that the work needs to be done and ask the Holy Spirit s help to give us the strength we need for the task. The rooting out may be as painful as a surgery and the recovery may be a long process of starts and stops. Why would we want to even do this? It sounds as painful as a root canal! What is in it for us to become disciples of Jesus? Jesus states in John 10:10. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. Jesus promises (Continued on page 4) 2

3 Parish News Please pray for those in nursing homes, the families of the sick, caregivers, the military and their families, and for the following: The Sick: Fred Anderson, Arlene Beers, Kathleen Bianco, Nancy Bishop, Anne & Ron Bisson, Elizabeth Block-Kloss, Dr. Dennis Clifford, Mark Clifford, Colleen Dickinson, Marie Edquist, Helen Eisel, Adrian Vela Garay, Fr. Ralph Goman, Lu Gragert, Dianne Hummel, Dorene Johnson, Luke Julien, Evelyn Kerber, Sue Kobe, Barb Kok, Teresa Lucken, Barbara Mackintosh, Rose McGonagle, Pat Malinowski, Deborah Marrone, Tali Montoya, Fred Mulvany, Sandy Muschenheim, Alice Paulsrud, Elsie June Phillips, Bob (Whimpy) Quinn, Bernie Reid, Joshua Reid, Sharon Reid, Gary Roux, Mardie Rydell, Kathleen & Robert Sawyer, Jean Schwappach, Loraine Schwinn, Mary Seurer, Jeanne Sheck, Sandy Sperrazza, Doris Stacey, Gil & Bev Stifter, Jim & Ranee Sulfridge, Dario Vizcarra Tapia, Geri VanLith, Mrs. John Vilipski, Elias Youngblom, and Regis Yunker. Dear Parishioners, Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink will surely not lose his reward. This is what Jesus tells us in this gospel. That is a comforting thought. Even the slightest good deed done for him or for his Kingdom will not go unrewarded - even if it's only giving a glass of water to someone who is thirsty. That is the generosity of our Lord. He lavishes His blessings on everyone who will allow Him. Sadly, like St. John in this weekend s gospel, we are less generous than our Lord. Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him, because he does not follow us. St. John had received the authority to drive out demons, but that wasn t good enough for him. He wanted to have the authority, and nobody else. He did not rejoice that people were being freed from their demonic possessions; he was envious that someone else was doing it instead of him. This exchange between St. John and Jesus seems like a small one, but it gives us a glimpse into the very heart of God. God is pure goodness, pure generosity. There is no evil, no selfishness or envy in the heart of God. It is His nature to shine with goodness, to spread goodness; He is always surrounding us with signs of His love. This generosity of God will probably surprise us on the day of our judgment. When we think of that day, we may tend to focus on the negative. We may tend to think of God pulling out a list of our sins, our shortcomings, and our stubborn, selfish actions. And it is true, in the light of Christ's gaze, we will see our sins more clearly than ever. But Jesus points out that the Judgment will also have another part to it. Even if someone gives just a glass of water to a thirsty neighbor in Christ's name, he will not lose his reward - think about what that means. Every act of forgiveness, every donation to a worthy cause, every penny put in the collection basket, every piece of clothing given to the poor, every kind letter or phone call or visit to someone who was sick, in prison, or alone, every prayer offered up for those in need, every word of comfort, instruction, and guidance, every single action that we perform in our Christian efforts to love God and neighbor is noticed, it is remembered, and it is delighted in by our Lord Jesus Christ. And he is storing up rewards for them all in heaven. This can provide us with some consolation when it seems like our efforts are having no effect. I gave food to my neighbor, but it won t last, he ll just be hungry again. I preach the truth with love the best that I can, but what good does it do? Nobody seems to be listening. I m being patient with my coworker and responding to hate with love, but it s still the same thing every day. What does it matter? Anyone who gives you even a cup of water to drink will surely not lose his reward. Our Lord is with us, seeing those good deeds that we do and storing up the reward He longs to give us in heaven. Let us show our love for the Lord by giving Him those acts of love and generosity in which He delights, and marvel at how He will outdo us with the love and care that He will show us in return. Fr. Liekhus 3

Reflection Questions: Write on a slip of paper something that is getting in the way of full discipleship to God s will in your life. You do not have to share this with others. Putting it in writing makes it real. Spend time this week thinking and praying about what you have written. Who have we labeled as the in group or the not one of us group? What stops us from wanting to be full disciples of Jesus? What does an abundant life in Christ look like? 4

8 SAN GABRIEL ARCANGEL Confesiones, domingos 12:30pm Santa Misa, domingos 1:00pm Pastor: Rev.
