2 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 2 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 27, 2019 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. Luke 4:18a TIME The holidays are well behind us; the year stretches out ahead. And what sort of year will it be? To judge by the words of Jesus in today s Gospel, it will be a year acceptable to the Lord. And Jesus surely didn t mean only the next three hundred sixty-five days facing his listeners at that time. When Jesus announced the arrival of God s favor, it was a message for all time, for every year. Similarly, we read today in Nehemiah how the people gathered with solemnity to hear God s word as though for the first time. They listened, and then fell to the ground and wept. But the prophet said, Today is holy... do not be sad, and do not weep. The year acceptable to the Lord is this year. The day that is holy is this day. The time to listen is now. What sort of year will you have? What sort of day? God s help is always here. What you do with each day can be holy and acceptable to the Lord if you but listen to and act on God s word. Copyright J. If you d like more information or have any questions, please contact Jazz Cunningham at (530) or stayauburn@gmail.com Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest All boys and girls ages nine to fourteen are invited to participate in the Knights of Columbus Basketball Free Throw Contest. The contest will be held on Sunday, February 10 at the St. Teresa of Avila Parish Hall. Registration begins at 11:30am, and the competition starts at 12:00am. This is a free event. Contestants must be at least age 9 on January 1, Winners will advance to the District contest which will take place in this location immediately following our local contest. District winners will advance to the Chapter, and State competitions. A copy of the contestant s birth certificate to verify age, and a parent s signature of consent for the registration sheet are required. Nine, ten and eleven year old competitors will shoot from a distance of twelve feet, while the older competitors shoot from the standard free throw distance of fifteen feet. 4 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 4 WE ARE ONE BODY IN CHRIST These words of St. Paul remind us today of the great call God has given to each of us and the great challenge as well. The call? To be the very hands, feet, eyes and heart of the Risen Lord Jesus Christ in today s world. And how do we do this? By being sensitive to the many gifts God has given us, and developing them, expanding them, sharing them with others, especially with the poor. And there lies the challenge. To be the Body of Christ, we must cling to Him whose Body we share. We must allow for the Spirit to call and bless us in different ways and to realize that we are all part of His Body, united in mind and head. May we be faithful to Christ in both the call and the challenge. This week we celebrate Catholic Schools week. What a wonderful celebration! These schools have educated many students over the years. Today we celebrate that we are still viable schools offering a solid catholic education where our children are nurtured to grow in faith and in community. I thank all the administration, teachers and staff for their commitment to catholic education and for encouraging our children to grow into who God created them to be. I thank all the parents, and all the benefactors who so generously support catholic education and allow our community of Auburn to continue to have a catholic presence in the school system. Let us continue to pray for our schools, for all schools, and for all education that the hand of God may direct our children to recognize they are a valuable part of the Body of Christ and have gifts to offer within the community. As we read from the beginning of Luke s gospel, let us all rejoice in Jesus Christ and the Spirit of God who is with us now. Let us rejoice in each other that we are all part of the Body of Christ and working together we can always make a difference in today s world. Peace Fr. 5 January 27, 2019 Page 5 Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 27 de enero de 2019 El espíritu del Señor está sobre mi, porque me ha ungido para llevar a los pobres la buena nueva. Lucas 4:18a EL TIEMPO Los días de fiesta ya pasaron, el año se nos viene encima. Y qué clase de año será? De acuerdo con las palabras de Jesús en el Evangelio de hoy, será el año de la gracia del Señor. Y Jesús con seguridad no se refería solamente a los próximos trescientos sesenta y cinco días cuando hablaba a la gente en ese tiempo. El anuncio de la llegada de la gracia de Dios lo hizo Jesús para todos los tiempos, para cada año. De manera similar, leemos hoy en Nehemías cómo la gente se reunía con solemnidad a escuchar la Palabra de Dios como si fuera la primera vez. Escuchaban y luego se postraban con el rostro en la tierra y lloraban. Pero el profeta decía: Este día está dedicado al Señor no estén tristes. El año de la gracia del Señor es este año. El día dedicado al Señor es hoy. El tiempo de escuchar es ahora. Qué clase de año tendrás? Qué clase de día? La ayuda de Dios siempre está aquí.
