STEWARDSHIP- SHARING OUR TREASURE WITH THE COMMUNITY THE SAINT PAUL SEMINARY IS THE RECIPIENT FOR AUGUST The Charitable Giving 2 nd collection August 8 & 9, 2015, will support The Saint Paul Seminary. The St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, located in St. Paul, was founded by Archbishop John Ireland in 1894, to provide ordained priests for the ever-increasing Catholic population of the Upper Midwest. The seminary now sits on the south campus of the University of St. Thomas, allowing the seminarians and lay students to be part of the St. Thomas community. Since its creation, over 3,000 priests have been ordained from the St. Paul Seminary, with 33 of them being consecrated bishops including three archbishops, one of whom, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, is a candidate for canonization. In 1987 the Saint Paul Seminary and the then College of St. Thomas, under the supervision of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, formalized ties and the seminary became the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity. This agreement has allowed the seminary to expand its programs to support both the formation of seminarians to become priests and the laity to become leaders in their parishes. Students of the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity can earn degrees in Masters of Arts in Theology, Masters of Arts in Religious Education, Masters of Divinity, and Masters of Divinity for Laity. There are currently over 90 seminarians studying for 10 different dioceses or archdioceses with students from 9 different nations living in house. Please be generous with your support. 2

Dear Parishioners, This weekend, we will continue to hear from John 6, the Bread of Life discourse. Last week, it began with the multiplication of the loaves to feed the multitude. Now, Jesus has walked across the sea without the crowd knowing it, and they come looking for him. When they finally look on the other side of the sea and find him, they ask how on earth he got there, since they knew he didn t go on one of their boats. Jesus ignores the question; rather, he gets right to the point: You were looking for me because I gave you bread, and you want more. I can give you so much more than that, if you only knew to ask. Look at how hard you work, just for food! Don t work so hard for bread; work for the food that will satisfy you forever. It is not difficult to apply that to our own lives. Look at how hard we work for material success and creature comforts, to nourish our bodies. Now compare that to how hard we work on our spiritual life, to nourish our souls. Is it a bit out of proportion? The things of this world come and go so quickly, and all the hard work we did for them is spent. But when we work hard to please the Lord spending time with Him in prayer, doing good for others, contributing to something that is greater than ourselves and our own lives then we are truly nourished forever. That hard work will pay dividends for eternity. The crowd hears this, and so says to Jesus, What can we do to accomplish the works of God? That question is music to Jesus ears. They are moving from being concerned with satisfying their physical hunger to something greater. We, too, need to ask this question. What can I do to accomplish the works of God? Imagine if we asked that question every morning, and then spent the day trying to do it. How close would our relationship with God be if that was our constant motivation, how does this accomplish the work of God? Let us spend our efforts where they matter the most: on pleasing God. Fr. Liekhus Men s Softball Schedule The men lost the warm -up to next week s first playoff game against OLG White, 8-2. There s speculation that they were sand-bagging purposely dropping infield pop-ups and hitting lazy fly balls in order to lull the opposition into a false sense of security for next week. Sure, let s go with that. Next game: Monday, August 3, 6:15pm vs. OLG White on the baseball field. Winner plays for the championship at 7:30pm on the softball field. Let s Raise Some Dough! 5 Parish News 2015 Mainstreet Project Update Construction on Stage 2 of the Mainstreet Improvement project, between 10th Ave and 8th Ave, has begun. Stage 2 is anticipated to last about 8 weeks after which time work will begin on Stage 3 between 8th and 5th Avenues and the final Stage 4 Final Paving. All Stages are scheduled to be completed in October This construction will not affect our weekday or weekend Mass schedule but watch for closures that may affect your travel. All are encouraged to visit the project website for the latest updates on traffic control. You can also sign up for construction updates at hopkinsmainstreet. 6 Youth Formation, School & Parish News CINDY NOVAK, NEW DIRECTOR OF YOUTH FORMATION My name is Cindy Novak and I am St. Gabriel s new Director of Youth Formation. I am very excited to be a part of this vital parish community and have enjoyed meeting the rest of the staff, exploring the two campuses, and meeting parishioners. I m also quickly falling in love with the city of Hopkins what a jewel in the metro area! I grew up on a farm in central MN, attended college (the first time!) at the University of MN and have accumulated degrees over the years from the U of M and the University of St. Thomas. I have lived in Coon Rapids for the past 33 years with my husband Bryan and our family. Our family attends St. William s in Fridley. For the past nine years, I worked at Pax Christi in Eden Prairie as a youth minister (first for the Sr. High youth and most recently for middle school youth); prior to that I worked at Epiphany in Coon Rapids as the middle school youth minister. And prior to that, I was using my secondary teaching license in the Anoka-Hennepin school district. I look forward to working with our children, youth, and families and all of our faith formation volunteers to have an engaging, interactive, fun, and lively program at St. Gabriel s. (Exodus 16:4) When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, God calls us to be content with a fair portion and to be willing to share the rest. Muchos de nosotros tenemos más de un trabajo y parecería que nunca tenemos suficiente tiempo. Somos trabajadores, voluntarios, padres, amigos y la mayoría es más de una cosa a la vez. Pero, cuál de estos es el trabajo que Dios quiere? Rara vez vemos nuestro trabajo común como el trabajo que Dios quiere. Quizás pensamos que debemos ser ministros o sacerdotes, misioneros o benefactores, que debemos realizar trabajos de tiempo completo que se consideran como las obras de Dios. Pero todo lo que hacemos con un corazón fiel y con amor por el prójimo es una obra de Dios. Cada uno tiene un papel que cumplir en el mundo y muchos dones son necesarios. No siempre podemos ver la relación directa que existe entre nuestro trabajo diario y los designios de Dios. Pero confiamos y tenemos fe en que Dios nos guía a hacer lo que es necesario, cuando es necesario. Cuál es la obra de Dios?
