A reception was held in the Community Room following Mass for the graduates and their families. GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL S SUNDAY GIVING Ytd expected $959,373 Ytd actual $912,135 6/2 $12,299 Dear Parishioners, I would like to thank everyone who came to the End of an Era party at the St. John s campus last week, marking the closing of St. John s parish school. It was great to see so many of our graduates and teachers come back to share memories of their time at the school. I would also like to express my appreciation for all of our parishioners, who have been extraordinarily generous in their time and money to help make St. John s School a success these past nine years. While it is an end of the St. John s parish school era, it certainly isn t the end of Catholic education for our parish! I had a parent in my office the other day, telling me he was concerned that parishioners had come to him and said, We re sorry you re leaving. Father, he said, we re not going anywhere. St. Gabriel s is our parish. We re sending our son to Notre Dame Academy (NDA), the school our parish sponsors. Do parishioners think the school families are leaving? I certainly hope not! To date, 72 of our 90 K-6 students are registered for NDA. I can t tell you how grateful, excited and relieved I am that so many of our school families are willing to make this transition to our regional school. It tells me that our St. John s School culture that we take so much pride in will be a part of NDA. And it tells me that we will continue to see our school families every Sunday at Mass in the parish, including over the summer. *AHEM We have been through a lot these last couple of years, with the combining of our two parishes into one and our transition to a regional school. The process has been difficult and frustrating at times, I know, but it has also already produced the great fruit of fuller Masses and more robust ministries. It is my hope that these transitions are coming to an end, and we can begin to more fully devote our attention to the business of proclaiming the love that Jesus Christ has for us and for the world. -Fr. Liekhus St. Gabriel s Men s Softball is Here! We re back, with a new name, new jerseys and the same old, tired players. After a heart-breaking loss in the first round of the playoffs last year to Holy Family (after leading 12-0 in the second inning), the men of St. Gabriel s are itching to move on. The two teams are combining into one this year and the league welcomes St. Patrick s in Edina into the fold. Come cheer the guys on and enjoy burgers and beers during and after the game. St. Gabriel s (St. John s Campus) Funeral Luncheon Committee Daniel Hirl's Eagle Project at St. Margaret's Cemetery Dear fellow parishioners, June 15, 2013 I am running a service project to help fix up St. Margaret's Cemetery on Bren Road, as part of my Boy Scout Eagle Award. This will consist of edging the flat gravestones, many of which have grass encroaching on them. I would like to ask for volunteers for this day, who can help with the edging. If you would like to help out, please come to the cemetery at 1:00pm and bring any small shovels and gardening gloves you can. Extras will be available for those who have none. Please help fix up the cemetery, so that it may remain in good condition. Pizzas and beverages will be served to all volunteers! 5 Parish News ST. JOHN S SCHOOL NEWS End of Era Celebration: Thursday, May 30, St. John s School held the End of Era Celebration from 5:30 to 7:30pm on the church grounds. A picnic style lunch was served. In spite of the rain we had a very nice turnout of St. John families consisting of parishioners, alumni and friends. A short ceremony was held at 6:30pm on the patio with Father Goman sharing a few words about St. John s. Father Liekhus acknowledged the teachers for their service to St. John s School. Ed Bennett, school committee chair and Father Liekhus presented each teacher and staff member with a certificate. A booklet of submitted memories was made available to those that submitted a memory and also to others wanting a copy of the keepsake. The office wall quilt, Believe, Achieve and Belong was raffled off and the winner was Mary Rivers. It was a nice evening filled with lots of reminiscing. Sincere thanks to Home and School for organizing it. End of Year Prayer Service: St. John s first day of school started with a prayer service and ended with one in the St. Francis courtyard. 6 Faith Formation Would You Like to Help Foster Community at St. Gabriel s? Faith Formation Catechists do exactly that each week with the children in their class. Please contact Chuck Romportl, our Faith Formation Director, to see if being a Catechist may be your way to help build community in our parish. Please prayerfully consider this ministry for yourself, or perhaps you know the name of someone else who should receive the call to become a catechist. As always, we are counting on the prayers of all our parishioners to support the catechetical ministry here at St. Gabriel s. Our 4th Graders are Sharing (Because They re Caring)! Our 4th Grade Faith Formation students put candy into decorated Boxes for Sharing and Caring Hands. Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim) X Domingo Ordinario C 9 de junio del 2013 ESPERANZA Y VIDA Las Escrituras del hoy nos cuentan la historia de dos viudas. La primera lectura relata la difícil situación en la que vivía la viuda con la que el profeta Elías se quedó y el Evangelio cuenta la historia de la viuda de Naín, en cada una de estas historias cada viuda el hijo único de ellas murió. En la cultura de esos países en ese tiempo, el hijo era el sustento para la viuda y quien además continuaba la descendencia familiar que era igual a la inmortalidad. La viuda cuyo único hijo hubiera muerto perdía toda esperanza. Elías y Jesús son los restauradores de esperanza; ellos devuelven la vida a sus hijos. San Pablo, metafóricamente hablando, revivió de la muerte a la vida cuando él se convirtió después de la llamada de Dios de la que él habla en la segunda lectura. A qué están llamados los cristianos hoy en día? Quizá no podemos revivir de la muerte, pero quizá podemos reanimar la esperanza de un padre o una madre soltera. Quizá no podemos convertir a un perseguidor como Pablo, pero si abiertamente hacemos vida el Evangelio en nuestras vidas, podríamos tocar una vida con la Buena Nueva.
