The Peter s Pence Collection derives its name from an ancient custom. In ninth-century England, King Alfred the Great collected money, a pence from landowners as financial support for the Pope. In his address of March 20, 2013, Pope Francis spoke of our responsibility before the world and creation. There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy and those who suffer, and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace, he said. Today, the purpose of the Peter s Pence collection is to provide the Holy Father with the financial means to respond to those who are suffering as a result of war, oppression, natural disaster, and disease. Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in faith who are facing adversity. Victims from natural disasters, wars, diseases and other catastrophic events receive assistance from Peter s Pence. Economically strapped diocese and churches, hospitals and Catholic education programs are also among recipients of these funds. The second collection on June 14, 2015 for Peter s Pence, is to provide the Holy Father with the financial means to provide emergency assistance to those in need because of natural disaster, war, oppression, and disease. Dear Parishioners, In our gospel this weekend, we hear the parable of the mustard seed. A mustard seed is tiny, and yet from that tiny seed grows a tree in which birds can make a nest. That, Jesus tells us, is like the Kingdom of God. Even the smallest act of discipleship on our part can blossom and flourish, thanks to the grace of God. It is no wonder that our Lord tells his disciples, Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink will surely not lose his reward. That is the generosity of our Lord, and this generosity will probably surprise us on the day of our judgment. When we think of that day, we may tend to focus on the negative. We may tend to think of God pulling out a list of our sins, our shortcomings, and our stubborn selfish actions. And it is true, in the light of Christ's gaze, we will see our sins more clearly than ever. But the Day of Judgment will also have another part to it. Even if someone gives just a glass of water to a thirsty neighbor in Christ's name, he will not lose his reward - think about what that means. Every act of forgiveness, every donation to a worthy cause, every penny put in the collection basket, every piece of clothing given to the poor, every kind letter or phone call or visit to someone who was sick, in prison, or alone, every prayer offered up for those in need, every word of comfort, instruction, and guidance, every single action that we perform in our Christian efforts to love God and neighbor is noticed, it is remembered, and it is delighted in by our Lord Jesus Christ. And he is storing up rewards for them all in heaven. Why would we be rewarded for such small acts? Because that s all it takes for the Kingdom of God to spread, in ways that we would never imagine. The other parable we hear this weekend is of the farmer who sows the seeds, and how the plants then mature without his knowledge or design. Our part is to sow the seeds through prayer, fasting and works of charity, trusting that God will use them for His purposes, often times without our knowledge or design. May God bless our efforts to spread the Kingdom of God, and be generous in rewarding our faithfulness. Fr. Liekhus AGE LIMIT for Volunteers! You must be under the age of 106! It should be a fun time, but for some of our neighbors that's an added burden to feed their children. During the school year the families take advantage of free and reduced meals. Once school is out, where do they get food to replace the meals? Hopefully from ICA. Typically the summer months at ICA are slow donation months due to various reasons: people going on vacation and enjoying the nice summer weather. We will accept recipes all summer! 13 WEEKS AND COUNTING Those of you who were St. Joseph parishioners prior to uniting with St John s in January 2013 may remember some of the numerous articles in the 2010 St. Joseph parish bulletins promoting that year s Fall Festival. One particular June article recalled the 1950 s television series, Life Is Worth Living, hosted by His Excellency Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Bishop Sheen was a master communicator. His simple yet powerful eloquence enthralled his studio audiences and literally millions of viewers with his weekly Tuesday-evening telecasts. (Winning an Emmy in 1952, he acknowledged its acceptance with the words, I feel it is time to pay tribute to my four writers; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. ) The Bishop used a disappearing chalkboard to illustrate and emphasize the salient points of his lessons. He 6 would continue his homilies until he needed the board again and invariably it would reappear squeaky-clean and His Excellency would announce with a twinkle in his eye that his angel was still on the job. Well, for the third straight year Romaine Bechir will be chairing the Fall Festival. However, this year, she will be the contact for St. Gabriel s Fall Festival, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so she will be in need of a whole host of angels to ensure the success of the celebration. Already, one of her main concerns has been addressed when angels Deacon Darrel Branch and his wife, Chris, volunteered to chair the Kitchen/Chicken Dinner subcommittee. She is now looking for another angel to chair Bingo on Sunday. Remember, it takes 200 or more angels to get the job done. Be an angel for Romaine! Many hands make light work! Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim) XI Domingo Ordinario B 14 de junio del 2015 TODO ES GRACIA Durante los domingos del Tiempo Ordinario, la lectura del Antiguo Testamento se relaciona con el tema del Evangelio de ese domingo. Hoy Ezequiel ve a Dios elevar los árboles pequeños y florecer los árboles secos. Y en las parábolas del Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos anima poniendo como ejemplos el fruto abundante que puede dar una semilla y que la semilla tan pequeña de mostaza crece y se convierte en uno de los arbustos más grandes, y así es Dios quien hace crecer el Reino de un pequeño comienzo a un instrumento de salvación para todos. En la primera parábola la tierra por sí sola produce el fruto (Marcos 4:28). Además de la iniciativa de Dios, la parábola enseña que el crecimiento de la semilla, al principio invisible, no se puede detener. Para estar seguros, las personas que dependen de lo que impresiona o llama fuertemente la atención para estar convencidas o animadas pues van a estar decepcionadas en lo despacio que se hace realidad el reino que Jesús anunció. Pero para quienes aceptan el reino, todo es gracia y la gracia es verdadera. Aún cuando la segunda lectura no se relaciona ni con la primera ni con el Evangelio durante estos domingos; hay que considerar el mensaje que tiene la de hoy. San Pablo afirma que en nuestro camino de fe confiamos en Dios y esto debe hacernos un pueblo de valor indomable y fe inquebrantable. Y al mismo tiempo Pablo nos advierte que la fe también debe hacernos consientes de nuestra responsabilidad de hacer el bien. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
