VanErt STEWARDSHIP-SHARING OUR TREASURE WITH THE COMMUNITY MINNETONKA LIFECARE CENTER IS THERECIPIENT FOR JANUARY The second collection in January will be used to help our local Minnetonka LifeCare Center on Mainstreet in Hopkins. A small portion will be set aside for our ACCL Committee to provide Pro-Life Education, including future speakers, pamphlets, DVD's, flyers, postage, etc. Parenting programs, child development classes, financial assistance and even housing are a part of what the LifeCare Centers provide. It's not enough to say "don't have an abortion"... we can all be a part of helping women consider the Pro-Life decision by letting them know about the no cost services and life-affirming solutions available for women. The Minnetonka LifeCare Center will support them with pregnancy testing, maternity and baby needs including formula, diapers, baby food and more! Please be generous and pray that all these mothers can make a fresh start, a new beginning and share a positive future with their babies. PRAYER SERVICE FOR LIFE Prayer service will be on Wednesday, January 22 at 10:30am at the St. Paul Cathedral. See for more details. Then join the 40th Annual MARCH for LIFE at 12:00pm in front of the State Capitol and the 12:30pm program on the Capitol Front Steps. We know very little about Jesus life before his baptism. We hear about Jesus birth from both St. Matthew and St. Luke, and St. Luke gives us one more incident from when Jesus was 12, how Joseph and Mary had lost Jesus and found him in the Temple. But that s it. According to St. Luke, Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. Those first thirty years were hidden from the world, private, and probably fairly peaceful, living in a holy household with Mary and Joseph. It was probably pretty nice. But that was all going to change once Jesus came to the Jordan River to be baptized. I wonder how aware Jesus was just how different his life was about to become. After 30 years of relative peace, living in obscurity, being able to enter towns and villages just like anyone else, he was going to start a public ministry where everyone knew him, everyone needed him, and he would have to run to the desert in the middle of the night just to find some solitude. As he did many times during his earthly life, Jesus had to make a choice to trust his heavenly Father. Trusting the Lord is at the ground level of our faith. It s hard to imagine someone saying, Yes, I am a faithful Catholic, I love my neighbor, I try to follow the commandments, and I do love the Lord but I don t trust Him. You have to watch your back when it comes to God, because if you give Him a chance, He will probably let you down. That doesn t make sense. And yet, trust can be so hard. Life is full of reasons to be anxious. We lose our jobs, we lose our homes, we lose our loved ones; and even if we don t lose these things, we know that we could, there is a chance that we will. In these situations, well-meaning people may tell us to just have faith, to just trust in God, trust that everything will work out for the best. But there is a danger in that line of thinking. Instead of trusting God, we may be putting God to the test. To take an extreme example, imagine someone said, Lord, I trust you without reserve. I am certain of your love for me and that you will take care of me. In fact, I trust you so much, I am going to jump off this cliff, and I trust that you will save me, I know that you will keep me from harm, so great is my trust in you. That s not what it means to trust God. In this example, the person is not so much trusting God as he is telling God what is expected of Him. It is not much different to say, God, I trust that you will save me, as it is to say, God, I expect you to save me. And so it can be when we say, God, I trust that you will help me find a job. I trust that you will keep my family safe. I trust that you will restore my loved one to health. If we have difficulty trusting in God in this sense, when we think of the anxieties of life, that s actually a good thing, just as it would be good if someone had difficulty trusting that God would save them if they stepped off the cliff. Because He might not. He might give us His blessings and save us from suffering, but when He doesn t, it isn t a sign that He betrayed our trust. What does it mean to trust in God? Trusting in God is believing in His goodness, even though we don t understand what He is doing. That is the prayer that we should all strive to make our own. Lord, whatever you do or do not do, I trust you. I may or may not understand why you allow me to suffer, I may or may not understand why you do not put a stop to this evil, but I don t have to understand, because you do, and I trust you. Let us strive to remember that God is all good, that He loves us more than we can imagine, and it is this love and goodness that motivates everything He does in our lives. Fr. Liekhus 3

Padre James Liekhus (Padre Jim) El Bautismo del Senor A 15 de enero del 2014 HIJOS E HIJAS DE DIOS Ser el Hijo amado de Dios no es una condición a la que está apegado. Es una que comparte con nosotros. Todos nosotros estamos llamados a ser hijos e hijas de Dios. En Jesús, todos podemos reclamar la predilección de Dios. La segunda lectura aclara esto. Aquí leemos sobre el bautizo de Cornelio y los miembros de su casa. El discurso de Pedro recuenta la unción de Jesús por el Espíritu Santo y el gran poder que se esparció por Israel hasta la puerta de uno de los gentiles, Cornelio. Lo mismo que sucedió a su casa, nos sucede a nosotros. Nuestro trabajo en la tierra, nuestra vocación bautismal y la tarea honorable que realizamos tendrá su fin. Lo que no tiene fin es la vida de salvación que recibimos con el Bautismo. No hay fin a la vida de los hijos de Dios; no hay fin a la compasión de Dios que conocemos en Jesús. No hay fin a nuestra posición como pueblo elegido y amado por Dios. A causa de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús, siempre estaremos entre los predilectos de Dios. Muchas de ellas mantienen su carácter religioso mientras que otras son simplemente una excusa para festejar, mejorar la economía local o hacer política, pero no por estas razones deben ser descartadas. Tomemos, por ejemplo, la fiesta de san Sebastián de las Ovejas en la frontera entre Argentina y Chile. Esta fiesta es más vieja que ambas naciones y su peregrinación pisa los dos suelos. A lo largo del tiempo, esta fiesta ha sufrido por razones políticas entre ambas naciones, pero a partir de 1980 las autoridades eclesiásticas, civiles y gubernamentales han intentado revitalizar esta fiesta por varios motivos. Las autoridades eclesiásticas la usan para renovar el cristianismo añadiendo las enseñanzas y prácticas del Concilio Vaticano II a las tradiciones antiguas. Las autoridades civiles la utilizan para incrementar el comercio y el turismo en la región. Los gobiernos de Chile y Argentina la ven como un enlace benéfico entre ambas naciones. Las fiestas patronales buscan integrar todos los aspectos del ser humano, su política, economía, cultura, celebración y religión.
