THIRD WEEK OF ADVENT: JOY Surely the Lord is our salvation; we will trust and will not be afraid. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of The Lord s coming. The Lord is our strength and our might. With joy we will draw water from the wells of salvation. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of The Lord s coming. Give thanks to the Lord, call on The Lord s name; make known The Lord s deeds among the nations. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of The Lord s coming. Shout aloud and sing for joy, for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. With joyous expectation we watch for signs of The Lord s coming. Lord God, we lit the first two Advent candles, the candle of hope and the candle of peace, with longing hearts awaiting your reign. As we light the third candle, the candle of joy, we join the heavens and the earth in praising Your holy name. With joyous expectation, we watch for signs of your Son s return. Come Lord Jesus! 2
Third Sunday of Advent December 16, :45 a.m. Announcements Gathering Song Come Thou Long Expected Jesus Intro Oh oh oh Oh oh oh Verse 1 Come Thou long expected Jesus Born to set Thy people free From our fears and sins release us Let us find our rest in Thee Israel's strength and consolation Hope of all the earth Thou art Dear desire of ev'ry nation Joy of ev'ry longing heart Interlude Oh oh oh Oh oh oh Verse 2 Born Thy people to deliver Born a child and yet a King Born to reign in us forever Now Thy gracious kingdom bring By Thine own eternal spirit Rule in all our hearts alone By Thine all sufficient merit Raise us to Thy glorious throne 3
Bridge You draw the hearts of shepherds You draw the hearts of kings Even as a baby You were changing ev'rything You called me to Your kingdom Before Your lips could speak And even as a baby You were reaching out for me And now we are awaiting The day of Your return When ev'ry eye will see You As heaven comes to earth Until the sky is opened Until the trumpet sounds The bride is getting ready The Church is singing out Verse 3 Come Thou long expected Jesus Born to set Thy people free From our fears and sins release us Let us find our rest in Thee Come Thou long expected King CCLI Song # Charles Wesley Jacob Sooter Meredith Andrews Rowland Hugh Prichard Acclamation BCP p. 355 Collect for Purity Song of Praise Glory (Let There Be Peace) Verse 1 One star Burns in the darkness Shines with the promise Emmanuel One child 4
Born in the stillness Living within us Emmanuel Chorus We're singing Glory Glory Let there be peace let there be peace Singing Glory Glory Let there be peace let it start in me Verse 2 One voice Speaks for the voiceless Hope for the hopeless Emmanuel One love Brings us together Now and forever Emmanuel Bridge Do not be afraid His love is strong enough to save us Nothing stands in the way His love is strong enough to lead us (REPEAT) Ending Let there be peace let it start in me CCLI Song # Chris Stevens Matt Maher Rachel Taylor Popadic Collect of the Day BCP p. 212 First Reading Zephaniah 3:14-20 All sit. Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! 5
The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the Lord. Remain seated. Second Reading Philippians 4:4-7 Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 6
Sequence Hymn O Come, O Come Emmanuel Verse 5 O Come, thou Key of David, come, and open wide our heavenly home; make safe the way that leads on high, and close the path to misery. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel Verse 6 O come, thou Day spring from on high, and cheer us by the drawing nigh; disperse the gloomy clouds of night, and death s dark shadow put to flight. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel All stand. Holy Gospel Luke 3:7-18 All stand. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the ax is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire." And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?" In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise." Even tax collectors came to be baptized, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?" He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you." Soldiers also asked him, "And we, what should we do?" He said 7
to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation and be satisfied with your wages." As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire." So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people. Homily The Rev. Dr. Mark D. Story Nicene Creed BCP p. 358 Advent Litany Lord Jesus, you are the light of the world, the light in our darkness. Come, Lord Jesus. Son of God, save us from our sins. Come, Lord Jesus.
