4 C. Read this source and then answer the questions below. On May 18 th, 1565 the Turkish galley fleet plus supply vessels arrived off Malta. Prearranged signals warned the villagers to go to the fortified places with the livestock. People went to Mdina, the Gozo citadel, St. Elmo, Birgu and Senglea but more people lived in the countryside than in the towns and accommodating everyone was difficult. Some in isolated places stayed out of the fortified towns and although the Turks would often treat these people as non-combatants, they took the livestock for meat or as draught animals to haul supply carts and canon to the besieged towns. The Turks put their army ashore at Marsaxlokk with little opposition for the horseshoe bay has a coastline of six and a half miles and easy landings can be made along the extensive shore. By May 21 a base was established at Marsa, at the head of Grand Harbour and a camp set up on the higher ground south of Birgu-Senglea. First, the people s help in his quarrel with the Pope. Second, the support of the English clergy. Third, he hoped by his actions to persuade or bully the Pope into recognising his marriage. The last was impossible for Clement failed to free himself from the Emperor s influence. The first two were achieved partly because England hated a foreign Pope and also because of the brilliant way Cromwell handled Parliament. The English clergy soon surrendered. Henry discovered, as if for the first time, that priests at their appointment make an oath to the Pope, clean contrary to the oath they make us, so that they seem his subjects, not ours. Fearing they would be charged, they humbly begged Henry s pardon and were fined.
