September 2017 Dear Christopher Folk, by Father Bill This Little Light of Mine Did you happen to see the partial eclipse on Monday, August 21? One of our members, Joe Bennett was kind enough to lend me a pair of eclipse glasses, so I got to view the eclipse in various stages throughout the middle of the day. When I left the church at noon, several parents were on the way to their cars with their preschoolers. I asked them all if they would like to look at the eclipse through Joe's glasses. No one turned me down and everyone was awestruck. The kids especially. These families stopped for a moment in their headlong rush through the day to see the moon and the sun in an uncommon embrace. It was the same when I got to Cook Children's. People were out on the sidewalk, chatting with each other, laughing, and sharing and pointing eclipse viewing tools skyward. There was a sense of awe and connectedness in the presence of something greater than us. I was amazed at how easy it was to approach strangers with something I knew they'd appreciate. It got me to thinking about my reluctance sometimes to share our faith with strangers. Why am I sometimes cautious about sharing the good news of the love of God in Christ? After all, Jesus has made a bigger difference in my life than any eclipse or celestial event could. Jesus has made me a better man, a better priest, a better husband and father, and a better human being than I ever could have been on my own. 12

2 I think I'm reluctant to share because I'm afraid of failing, or offending, or appearing to have some kind of false righteousness. I forget that it's simply my job to offer, as I did with the glasses. What do I have to offer? Love. The Church s only purpose and product. Much bigger than an eclipse. And it lasts. But, did you know that those folks are prayed for by name on a daily basis by you? Each day, except for Sunday, during the conduct of the Daily Office (Morning Prayer and/or Evening Prayer), the Officiant, representing all of St Christopher parishioners, recites and prays for the names of each person on the prayer list. This means that you are de facto praying for them too. Let s remember that these people are not just names on list but that you are daily praying for their well being. It was truly a joyful day for us and all the more special because we could share it with our many friends here at St. Christopher as well as many former members and friends. 4 Dear St. Christopher Church Family, We have started another school year here at St. Christopher Preschool. The first few days are full of learning about school. Children are learning a new routine in a new environment. It is oh so much fun, but it can also be exhausting for both the teachers and children. Please pray for all of us as we readjust to a new year and new friends. I want to give a shout out to all church members who have prayed for enrollment and who have helped us get our facilities ready for another year. I am so grateful for the school board and vestry that have been so very kind and encouraging. I am grateful for the Jr. Warden s over the years that have provided so much support to our school. I am grateful beyond words for the WONDERFUL teachers I get to work with and their dedication to this school. As a result, I am thankful for the families whose lives have been blessed by this Church and Preschool. Thank You! We still have just a couple of spaces left in our two year old and in our PreK classroom. Thanks to those who have been passing out our business cards.
