2 Confirmation at First English Lutheran Church On Pentecost Sunday, June 8, 2014 nine of our young people affirmed their baptism and were made full adult members of First English Evangelical Lutheran Church. This is the largest confirmation class we ve had here since 1984! The group began formal instruction on September 16, 2012; their classes were held during the Sunday School hour and taught by Pastor Schweitzer and Debbie Lane. As Pastor Schweitzer noted in his sermon, they re true Millennials: all but one born in the year 2000 (and that person was born in December 1999). Following the well-attended service a reception for the class was held in the Wagner Room. The large crowd was well accommodated in this spacious area, spilling out onto Monument Avenue through the side doors which are finally able to be used once more as a way to get into and out of the building. We expect great things from this class as they go through high school and enrich our church life in every way! Five of them plus two members of last year s confirmation class will be attending Kairos at Roanoke College later this month, the Virginia Synod s youth event for rising ninth through twelfth graders. The confirmands are: Ellie Fenerty, Kirk Fenerty, Nate Fenerty, Jake Hamilton, Cassidy Hoke, Amanda Jarvis, Syndey Stricker, Parker Vida, and Spencer Vida. Congratulations and God s blessings!

3 Called Congregational Meeting Sunday, June 22, 2014 Immediately following the 10:30am service The two purposes of this meeting are: Update the congregation on the progress of the church Vote on a proposed new staff position Soul Knitters and Crocheters Too! We ll be working solo for the summer and start back up in September. If you would like to join in the fun and help with prayer shawls for homebound members, please contact Carol Schweitzer or André Oldershaw. We ll have yarn and patterns available if you need assistance. If you would like to know more about our homebound members, there is a list posted on the bulletin board outside the Wagner Room. If you or someone you know would like to receive a prayer shawl/lap blanket made by the group, please contact André, Carol, or the church office and we ll be sure that you are on our list. Our other projects include chemo caps for cancer patients, preemie hats, and items for abused women and children.

4 We congratulate the following members of First English Lutheran Church upon their graduation from High School or College: High School Michelle Mondrey: Hanover High School. Michelle will attend Old Dominion University in the fall. Erin Murphy: Douglas Freeman High School. Erin will attend the University of Virginia in the fall. Ethan Oldershaw: Patrick Henry High School. College Ali Gentry: Longwood University. Emily Griffin: Towson University - B.S. in Sport Management with a minor in Business Administration. Lauren Sughrue: Bachelor of Architecture from Virginia Tech. Todd Teigler: VCU/MCV - M.D. - Residency already begun at Brown University Medical School. Jeff Tehovnic: VCU - Masters in Computer Info Systems and Security. Congratulations to all these members upon their achievements! Please let us know if we have inadvertently left anyone out.

5 Welcome to Mr. Linwood D. Lunde We welcome Mr. Linwood D. Lunde as our official Organist and Director of Music as of June 9, 2014! He has been serving as interim in this position since the retirement of Mr. Linus Ellis on October 15, 2013, but, as a result of a Council action at its regular meeting on May 20, his position is official! We all have gotten to know and love Linn and are glad that everything has now been regularized. Born in Richmond, he is a graduate of VCU. For years he worked for Schantz Organ Company and also served as organist at the Byrd Theater. In addition, he has served as organist at a number of churches in the area. And he could not live closer to the church: at One Monument Avenue, our neighbor across the street. Welcome to First English, Linn. We look forward to your leadership of the choirs and presence at the console for many years to come!

6 2014 Virginia Synod Assembly The 2014 VA Synod Assembly was held from Friday, May 30 through Sunday, June 1 at Roanoke College in Salem, VA. First English was represented by: Bonnie Buckner, Pastor Carol Schweitzer (also representing Union Presbyterian Seminary), Pastor John Schweitzer, and Joe Thisted.
