1 Thirteenth Sunday After Pentecost August 14, 2016 at Ten Fifty A.M. Man of La Mancha Do you ever daydream you're a hero, fighting the evils of the world? That's what the character Don Quixote does in this brilliant musical. While his adventures seem eccentric and comical, his heart is in the right place. But you and I don't have to fight the world's battles on our own. Our kindness can change the world - one person at a time.

2 SERVICE OF WORSHIP ( Those who are able, please stand in honor of God.) PRELUDE Little Bird, Little Bird St. Luke's Orchestra Robert Fasol, organist Eric Bradford, conductor Mitch Leigh RINGING OF THE BELLS HYMN 158 Come, Christians, Join to Sing SPANISH HYMN Come, Christians, join to sing: Alleluia! CALL TO WORSHIP God looks at us with eyes full of love, helping us to see ourselves in a new light. Because of the love of Christ, we are given new life, new purpose, new hopes and dreams. Rev. Wendy Lambert AFFIRMATION OF FAITH As a family of faith, let us affirm our faith together. I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; The third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic* church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. (* universal) GLORIA PATRI MEINEKE Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. CALL TO PRAYER The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. Rev. Linda Brinkworth CHORAL CALL TO PRAYER Almighty Father, hear our prayer, and bless all souls that wait before Thee. PASTORAL PRAYER

3 THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. CHORAL RESPONSE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM Simon Nicholas Carlson, son of David and Kimberly Carlson, born on June 14, Wesley Withiam Carlson, son of David and Kimberly Carlson, born on April 6, BAPTISM SONG Simon and Wesley, God claims you. God helps you, protects you and loves you too. We this day do all agree a child of God you ll always be. Simon and Wesley God claims you. God helps you, protects you and loves you too. CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE With God s help, we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that Simon and Wesley surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal. Mitch Leigh/Joe Darion I, Don Quixote (Man of La Mancha) After being thrown into the dungeon by the Spanish Inquisition, Cervantes requests a trial to defend his actions. He transforms himself into a chivalrous knight committed to fighting injustice. He renames himself Don Quixote, The Man of La Mancha. Mat Govich, soloist St. Luke's Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano Eric Bradford, conductor Hear me now, oh thou bleak and unbearable world. Thou art base and debauched as can be; and a knight with his banners all bravely unfurled now hurls down his gauntlet to thee! I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha, My destiny calls and I go, and the wild winds of fortune will carry me onward, oh, whither-so-ever they blow, whither-so-ever they blow, onward to glory I go! Hear me, heathens and wizards and serpents of sin! All your dastardly doings are past, for a holy endeavor is now to begin and virtue shall triumph at last! I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha. My destiny calls and I go, and the wild winds of fortune will carry me onward, oh, whither-so-ever they blow, whither-so-ever they blow, onward to glory I go! ANTHEM LIFE AT ST. LUKE S Rev. Phil Greenwald DEDICATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS Mitch Leigh/Joe Darion Dulcinea Don Quixote meets Aldonza, a lady of questionable morals, but believes her to be the lady Dulcinea, and treats her with kindness. Mat Govich, soloist St. Luke's Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano Eric Bradford, conductor I have dreamed thee too long, never seen thee or touched thee but known thee with all of my heart. Half a prayer, half a song, thou hast always been with me, though we have been always apart. OFFERTORY

4 Dulcinea, Dulcinea, I see heaven when I see thee, Dulcinea; and thy name is like a prayer an angel whispers, Dulcinea, Dulcinea. If I reach out to thee, do not tremble and shrink from the touch of my hand on thy hair. Let my fingers but see thou art warm and alive and no phantom to fade in the air. Dulcinea, Dulcinea, I have sought thee, sung thee, dreamed thee, Dulcinea; now I ve found thee and the world shall know thy glory, Dulcinea, Dulcinea. DOXOLOGY OLD 100th Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise Him all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Rev. David Poteet THE GOSPEL Jesus said to them, Bring some of the fish that you have just caught. So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred and fifty-three of them; and although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. Now none of the disciples dared ask him, Who are you? They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead. When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs. A second time he said to him, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you girded yourself and walked where you would; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish to go. (This he said to show by what death he was to glorify God.) And after this he said to him, Follow me. (John 21:10-19) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON St. Luke's on Broadway: Man of La Mancha arr. Mark Hayes The Quest (The Impossible Dream) Don Quixote expresses to Dulcinea the reasons for his mysterious behavior. Mat Govich, soloist Chancel Choir and St. Luke's Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano Eric Bradford, conductor To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, to run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong, to love pure and chaste from afar, to try when your arms are too weary, to reach the unreachable star! This is my quest, to follow that star, no matter how hopeless, no matter how far; to fight for the right without question or pause, to be willing to march into hell for a heavenly cause! And I know if I ll only be true to this glorious quest, that my heart will lie peaceful and calm, when I m laid to my rest. And the world will be better for this, that one man, scorned and covered with scars, still strove with his last ounce of courage to reach the unreachable stars. MUSICAL REFLECTION INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP If you desire to become a member of St. Luke s United Methodist Church, please refer to the announcement insert for additional information.
