Christ Congregational Church In reverence for the triune God, whom we gather to worship, and out of respect for those sitting around you, please silence all cell phones and electronic devices. Lufkin, Texas Baptism of our Lord January 10, :45 a.m. The Preparation for Worship In reverence for Almighty God, whom we gather to worship, and out of respect for those sitting around you, please silence all cell phones and electronic devices. We are grateful for the flowers gracing the narthex entrance today, provided to the glory of God by Dr. Billy O Quinn and Mary Ellen Rowland. Call to Worship The entrance tower bell is rung to summon God s people to the worship of the Eternal Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Please observe silence Prelude David C. Lawson, organ Awake, My Heart, with Gladness arr. Wilbur Held As we prepare our hearts and minds for worship, we invite you to join us in silently offering the following prayer of preparation: Holy Father, we come together in your presence as the family of God to offer you praise and thanksgiving, to hear and receive your Holy Word, to bring before you the needs of the world, to ask forgiveness of our sins, and to seek your grace; grant these things through your Son Jesus Christ in order that we may go from this place strengthened by your Spirit to give ourselves to His service. Amen. Opening Sentence The Reverend Randall K. Green The people stand Entrance Hymn -41 Love Divine, All Loves Excelling Blaenwern The people standing Opening Prayer The Reverend Randall K. Green TRADITIONAL WORSHIP FOR CONTEMPORARY PEOPLE

The people are seated The Old Testament Lesson Isaiah ; M. Todd Stracener, Thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. 4 Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. 5 Fear not, for I am with you; I will bring your offspring from the east, and from the west I will gather you. 6 I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Do not withhold; bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the end of the earth, 7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The people seated The Psalm (read responsively) Psalm , 9c-10 Choir R: The Lord shall give strength to His people. Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. R The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. R The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forever, and in his temple all cry, Glory! R The Ministry of the Word The Psalm Prayer The people stand The Gloria Patri Meineke All sing Glory to be the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end, Amen. Amen. Baptism of our Lord Page 2

The Ministry of the Word All standing The Gospel Lesson Luke As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Christ, 16 John answered them all, saying, I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. 18 So with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that he locked up John in prison. 21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and a voice came from heaven, You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise be to Christ. The people are seated Anthem The Christ Church Chorale Jesu, Joy of Man s Desiring J.S. Bach The people stand The New Testament Lesson Acts Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. All standing Hymn - 13 Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Nettleton The people are seated The Sermon The Reverend Randall K.Green A Strange Incident in Samaria Baptism of our Lord Page 3

Renewal of the Baptismal Covenant The people seated Introduction The minister introduces the renewal service. The Confession and Affirmation of Pardon Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy upon us and forgive us our sins, including those particular ones which we, in this time of silent confession, now bring before you. (silence is observed) Since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. (Hebrews ) The people stand Doxology Old 100th All sing Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; praise Him all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye, heav nly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. All standing Renewal of Covenantal Promises and Baptismal Vows Of those baptized Christians among us, as individuals, I ask: Do you this day reaffirm your renunciation of evil? I do. Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do, and with God s grace I will follow him as my Savior and Lord. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell. The third day He rose from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. Baptism of our Lord Page 4

Renewal of the Baptismal Covenant Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? The people are seated Thanksgiving for Water and the Act of Remembrance Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. The minister offers a prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of water, after which, as directed by the ushers, all baptized Christians are invited to come forward to dip their fingers into the water, not as a sacramental act, but as an act of grateful remembrance of their baptism into Christ. The Prayers The minister offers a prayer of consecration, after which the Lord s Prayer is offered: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. All stand Hymn A Charge to Keep I Have Boylston The Benediction Postlude O Thou of God the Father J.S. Bach Baptism of our Lord Page 5
