Prelude Veni, Creator Spiritus Robert Fasol, organist Marcel Dupré ringing of the Bells hymn 545 AURELIA The Church's One Foundation The church s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord; she is His new creation by water and the Word. From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride; with His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died. Elect from every nation, yet one o er all the earth; her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth; one holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, and to one hope she presses, with every grace endued. Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war, she waits the consummation of peace forevermore; till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest, and the great church victorious shall be the church at rest. Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One, and mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won. O happy ones and holy! Lord, give us grace that we like them, the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee. Rev. Phil Greenwald Call to WorshiP This morning we come to celebrate Pentecost; a time when God s Holy Spirit came to rest upon the disciples. There were tongues of fire resting above their heads and fiery passion within their hearts. We come to be reminded that God s Holy Spirit dwells within us: to guide us, inspire us, and remind us of all we ve been taught. Let the Holy Spirit enflame our souls to share Christ, grow in our faith, and serve the community. We will share God s love and bring hope to the world! affirmation of faith As a family of faith, let us affirm our faith together. We are not alone, we live in God's world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God's presence, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope.

3 In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen. gloria Patri MEINEKE Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. arr. Joshua Spacht Be Christ Chancel Choir Robert Fasol, piano/conductor Some go, some stay. Some preach, some pray. Some give a cup of water in Jesus' name. But for all who believe, the call is the same: be Christ, be Christ. anthem To a world lost in darkness, be light. Live the love that saved you. Give the grace He gave you. Let the witness of your life be Christ. His heart, our hands, my will, His plans. To live in surrender, to lay down our lives; to take up the cross, and in sacrifice be Christ, be Christ! To a world lost in darkness, be light. Live the love that saved you. Give the grace He gave you. Let the witness of your life be a living testimony, a reflection of His glory. May the only One we ever magnify be Christ, be Christ! To a world lost in darkness, be light. Live the love that saved you. Give the grace He gave you. Let the witness of your life be Christ, be Christ! Let the witness of your life be Christ! life at st. luke s recognition of graduates dedication of tithes and offerings offertory Rev. Wendy Lambert arr. Philip Keveren By Our Love Andrew Maguire and Connor McLaury, vocalists Robert Fasol, piano Brothers, let us come together, walking in the Spirit: there's much to be done. We will come reaching out from our comforts, and they will know us by our love. Sisters, we were made for kindness; we can pierce the darkness as He shines through us. We will be reaching with a song for healing, and they will know us by our love. The time is now: come, Church, arise. Love with His hands, see with His eyes. Bind it around you, let it never leave you, and they will know us by our love. Children, you are hope for justice; stand firm in the Truth now, set your hearts above. You will be reaching long after we're gone, and they will know us by our love! The time is now: come, Church, arise. Love with His hands, see with His eyes. Bind it around you, let it never leave you, and they will know us by our love. And they will know us by our love. doxology LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below: Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power up-lifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Rev. David Poteet new testament lesson When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. And they were amazed and wondered, saying, Are not all

4 these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians, we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God. And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? But others mocking said, They are filled with new wine. But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them, Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.' (Acts 2:1-17) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon Does History Have Anything to Teach Us? From the Sermon Series: Dreams and Visions InvItatIon and Great thanksgiving Christ our Lord invites to His table all who love Him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another. Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done Your will, we have broken Your law, we have rebelled against Your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Leader to people) Hear the Good News: Christ died while we were yet sinners; that proves God's love toward us. In the Name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! (People to leader) In the Name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! (All) Glory to God, Amen. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to You, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. You brought all things into being and called them good. You have given us dreams for a better life. We give ourselves to You. We are no longer our own, but Yours. Let us be put to work by You or laid aside by You, honored for You or humbled for You. Fill us or empty us. Let us have all things, let us have nothing. We freely and joyfully give all that we are to You. You sent Your Son that we might know life and have it more abundant. Live in us that we might live a life that makes an impact. Help us to see the opportunities we have to make a difference. Your mercy has transformed us, and You call us to share Your love with others. And so, with Your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise Your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are You, and blessed is Your Son Jesus Christ. By the baptism of His suffering, death, and resurrection, You gave birth to Your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit.

5 On the night in which He gave Himself up for us, Jesus took the bread, gave thanks to You, broke the bread, gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When the supper was over Jesus took the cup, gave thanks to You, gave it to the disciples and said: Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Pour out Your Holy Spirit on us, gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by His blood. By Your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at His heavenly banquet. Through Your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in Your holy Church, all honor and glory is Yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. the lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. receiving the Bread and the CuP The ushers will direct you to come forward to receive communion. If you are unable to come forward, please notify an usher and a server will come to you. Please feel free to stay at the rail in prayer as long as you wish. Gluten-free bread is available at the serving station on the south side of the Sanctuary. invitation to Christian discipleship If you desire to become a member of St. Luke s United Methodist Church, please refer to the announcement insert for additional information. hymn A Rushing Mighty Wind FESTAL SONG A rushing, mighty wind roars through a crowded room, and tongues of fire upon their heads disperse the people's gloom. God's Spirit blows the wind and lights the bright red flame; a Pentecost of tongues explodes in praise of Jesus' name. Three thousand souls that day in mind and hearts were stirred; and these were added to the church as they believed the Word. Lord, make our breath a wind and let our tongues be fire, and as at that first Pentecost Your people's lives inspire. sending forth Christ sent the Holy Spirit from the Father to fill us with God s presence.
