Twelfth Sunday After Pentecost August 27, 2017 at Ten Fifty A.M.

WelCome to st. luke s united methodist ChurCh We re so glad you ve joined us for worship this morning. Our mission is to share God s love and bring hope to the world. We hope you leave here today inspired by a message of hope and ready to embrace life in the week ahead. Prelude ringing of the Bells hymn 103 Andrew Lloyd Webber The Phantom of the Opera Organ and Orchestra ST. DENIO Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise. Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light, nor wanting, nor wasting, Thou rulest in might; Thy justice like mountains high soaring above Thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love. Thou reignest in glory; Thou dwellest in light; Thine angels adore Thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see tis only the splendor of light hideth Thee. Call to WorshiP Sometimes it is hard to face the world; we feel unworthy and maybe even unloved. We know the pain of mistakes we and others have made. It is easy to withdraw and hide. But God beckons to us. God calls to us in the midst of our pain. We gather this morning and hear once again the message of God s mercy, healing, and love. We come today to be strengthened to face the world and see its beauty through the love of God. Rev. Wendy Lambert gloria Patri MEINEKE Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Andrew Lloyd Webber arr. Ed Lojeski Masquerade Chancel Choir and Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano/organ Eric Bradford, conductor Masquerade, paper faces on parade. Masquerade, hide your face so the world will never find you. Masquerade, every face a different shade, masquerade, look around, there s another mask behind you. Swish and swirl, fish and fowl, flash of green, splash of brown, ace of hearts, face of clown. Faces, take your turn, take a ride on the merry-go-round. Kurd and king, beast and bird, ghoul and goose, fool and priest, curl of lip, twirl of cape, trace of rouge, face of ape. Faces, drink it in, drink it up, til you ve drowned in the light in the sound, but who can name the face. anthem Hymnals, Bibles, large print bulletins and hearing assistance devices are available in the Narthex. Children s Ministry is available during the worship service for infants - 5th grade. Parents with active or tearful children can watch a live feed of the service in the Watchorn Chapel. A children s activity bag is also available in the Narthex. A Hospitality Team member is at the Welcome Center to help. SERVICE OF WORSHIP ( Those who are able, please stand in honor of God.)

Masquerade, grinning yellows, spinning reds. Masquerade, take your fill, let the spectacle astound you. Masquerade, burning glances, turning heads. Masquerade, stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you. Masquerade, seething shadows, breathing lies. Masquerade, you can fool any friends who never knew you. Masquerade, leering satyrs, peering eyes, masquerade, run and hide, but a face will still pursue you. What a night, what a crowd, makes you glad, makes you proud, all the crème de la crème watching us, watching them, and all our fears are in the past. Six months of relief, of delight, of elysian peace and we can breathe at last. No more notes, here s a health, here s a toast to a prosperous year, to a new chandelier, and may its splendor never fade. Six months, what a joy, what a change, what a blessed release and what a Masquerade! Masquerade, paper faces on parade. Masquerade, hide your face so the world will never find you. Masquerade, every face with a different shade. Masquerade, look around, there s another mask behind you. Masquerade, burning glances, turning heads, masquerade, stop and stare at the sea of smiles around you. Masquerade, grinning yellows, spinning reds, masquerade, take your fill and let the spectacle astound you. Ah! Call to Prayer The peace of the Lord be with you. And also with you. Rev. Phil Greenwald Choral Call to Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, Your light shines within us. Let not my doubts nor my darkness speak to me. Lord Jesus Christ, Your light shines within us. Let my heart always welcome Your love. Pastoral Prayer the lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Choral response sacrament of BaPtism Gentry Marie Wallace, daughter of Trent and Courtney Wallace, born on October 26, BaPtism song Gentry, Gentry God claims you. God helps you, protects you and loves you too. We this day do all agree a child of God you ll always be. Gentry, Gentry God claims you. God helps you, protects you and loves you too. Congregational response With God s help, we will so order our lives after the example of Christ, that Gentry surrounded by steadfast love, may be established in the faith and confirmed and strengthened in the way that leads to life eternal. anthem A.L. Webber/C. Hart/R. Stilgoe Think of Me Rachel Barnard and Mat Govich, vocalists St. Luke's Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano Eric Bradford, conductor Think of me, think of me fondly when we ve said goodbye. Remember me every so often, promise me you ll try. On that day, that not so distant day, when you are far away and free, if you ever find a moment, spare a thought for me. And though it s clear, though it was always clear that this was never meant to be, if you happen to remember, stop and think of me. Think of August when the trees were green; don t think about the way things might have been. Think of me, think of me waking silent and resigned. Imagine me, trying too hard to put you from my mind. Think of me, please say you ll think of me whatever else you choose to do. There will never be a day when I won t think of you.

Can it be, can it be Christine? Long ago, it seems so long ago, how young and innocent we were. She may not remember me but I remember her. Flowers fade, the fruits of summer fade, they have their season so do we but please promise me that sometimes you will think of me! Life at St. Luke S Rev. Phil Greenwald DeDication of tithes and offerings offertory A.L. Webber/C. Hart/R. Stilgoe The Music of the Night Mat Govich, soloist St. Luke's Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano Eric Bradford, conductor Night time sharpens, heightens each sensation; darkness stirs and wakes imagination. Silently the senses abandon their defenses. Slowly, gently, night unfurls its splendor; grasp it, sense it, tremulous and tender. Turn your face away from the garish light of day, turn your thoughts away from cold, unfeeling light and listen to the music of the night. Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams! Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before! Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar and you ll live as you ve never lived before. Softly, deftly, music shall caress you. Hear it, feel it, secretly possess you. Open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind in this darkness which you know you cannot fight, the darkness of the music of the night. Let your mind start a journey through a strange, new world, leave all thoughts of the world you knew before. Let your soul take you where you long to be! Only then can you belong to me. Floating, falling, sweet intoxication. Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation. Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in to the power of the music that I write, the power of the music of the night. You alone can make my song take flight, help me make the music of the night. DoxoLogy OLD 100th Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below; praise Him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Rev. David Poteet the gospel There came a woman of Samaria to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. The Samaritan woman said to him, "How is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus said to her, "Go, call your husband, and come here." The woman answered him, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, "You are right in saying, 'I have no husband'; for you have had five husbands, and he whom you now have is not your husband; this you said truly." The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet." Just then his disciples came. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but none said, "What do you wish?" or, "Why are you talking with her?" So the woman left her water jar, and went away into the city, and said to the people, "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" (John 4:7-9, 16-19, 27-29) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sermon St. Luke's on Broadway: The Phantom of the Opera arr. Bob Chilcott All I Ask of You Rachel Barnard and Mat Govich, vocalists Chancel Choir and Orchestra Robert Fasol, piano Eric Bradford, conductor musical reflection

No more talk of darkness, forget these wide-eyed fears; I m here, nothing can harm you, my words will warm and calm you. Let me be your freedom, let daylight dry your tears; I m here, with you, beside you, to guard you and to guide you. Say you love me every waking moment, turn my head with talk of summertime. Say you need me with you now and always; promise me that all you say is true, that s all I ask of you. Let me be your shelter, let me be your light; you re safe, no one will find you, your fears are far behind you. All I want is freedom, a world with no more night; and you, always beside me, to hold me and to hide me. Say you ll share with me one love, one lifetime; say the word and I will follow you. Share each day with me, each night, each morning; anywhere you go, let me go, too. Love me; that s all I ask of you. invitation to Christian discipleship If you desire to become a member of St. Luke s United Methodist Church, please refer to the announcement insert for additional information. hymn 451 slane Be Thou My Vision Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, great God of heaven, my treasure Thou art. Great God of heaven, my victory won, may I reach heaven s joys, O bright heaven s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, still be my vision, O Ruler of all. sending forth A light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it.
