3 Spring Dear friends The trees changing from brown to green, buds bursting open, flowers beginning to bloom, early vegetables shooting, the evening sun stretching on, and how our spirits are lifted once again as the reality of the hoped for new life takes place before our very eyes. In the church year we are soon to celebrate what is called Pentecost. The disciples had waited for 40 days longing for the gift Jesus had promised, and on this day, before their very eyes, they found out Nursing that the gift was the Power The Elms Home, Swains Road, of God s Spirit, and it saturated them, and stayed withislethem, giving Bembridge, of Wight PO35them 5XS the hope they had waited for, that Jesus would never be them. Tel:apart 01983from For them this was a miracle, and it still is. (Mon Fri 9am to 5pm) (Out of office hours) info@courtdrift.co.uk If you don t believe in miracles just look at the trees turning from brown to green, the buds opening, the tiny vegetable shoots appearing, because these are miracles appearing right in front of our eyes every day. 4 Bembridge of Long Ago... In the following issues of the Parish Magazine I am going to show images of our village of times past This month we are looking at the Old Mill Farm and an unusual view of the Windmill. Both are photographs dating from the early part of the 1900 s, when the Mill was still working, the Miller being Alfred Morris. Alfred died in 1937 and left the farm and mill to his niece, Mrs. R. Smith who, with her husband Ted, worked the farm. The photo of the Windmill is different from most of the photos of the mill as the sails are turned to the north east rather than facing into the south west, the direction from which most our wind comes from. The miller would have lived in the farm house which is shown in the other photo, taken by the village photographer Alfred Wilson. The farm house is dated 1706 and the nearby barn was also built around this date. Sheep and cattle were the mainstay of the farm. When Ted Smith ran the farm when I was a boy in the 1940 s I can remember Ted bringing us milk which was in a churn on a push cart, mother had to have a jug handy. I have a copy of an extract from the booklet St Michael and All Angels, Swanmore which states that in Speed s map of the Island dated 1620 there were five windmills on the Island, including one at Bembridge, is there any other evidence of this?... John Woodford, April

5 Best Kept Village Competition The Golden Anniversary After the Presentation of the Best Kept Village Awards last Autumn, all 44 villages across the Island received a bag of 50 Golden Trumpet Daffodils to plant in celebration of the B KV A s Golden Jubilee in Our Daffodils were planted in the Boat at King s Oak covered with plenty of good compost. They have created a brilliant, welcoming Spring display which we hope has brought pleasure to both residents and visitors as they walk or drive up Kings Hill. Important Competitions The Best Kept Village Competition starts again on 1 May, 2018 and Judges will be looking at every aspect of our village environment in 16 categories. These include, importantly, absence of litter, care of buildings, trees and verges, public notice boards and Toilets, public spaces and private gardens; etc. Please help us maintain the high standard required to win the Best Kept Extra Large Village Award again this year. The Bembridge in Bloom Competition, sponsored by Hose Rhodes Dickson will also take place. For details see notice boards or the Parish Office. Thank you. 12 The Green Towns Group The Green Towns group have been working on several projects recently to improve the Bembridge environment. In 2016 the beds at the Lifeboat Station car park were improved so as to reduce maintenance, extra planting was introduced and the existing shrubs in the borders were pruned, membrane put down and covered with shingle. In 2017 the beds outside the Spinnaker were altered to highlight the Palm trees and to enhance the street scene. Again the addition of shingle reduces maintenance. This year the main project is to replant the 6 long planters opposite the King s Oak on King s Road. Initially this has involved taking out all of the existing vegetation which had become overgrown and encroached upon the pavement. The help of the village lengthsmen in this task has been invaluable as a lot of heavy work was required. This first task also involved removing 2 carrier bags worth of litter found among the vegetation, including glasses, bottles, cans and plastic. All the vegetation was then taken away for recycling. Having cleared the site in late March, the next activity (late April/early May) will be to add fertiliser and put down weed suppressing membrane ready for the new planting. On order since last Autumn are purple Verbena, white Sea Campion and the grass Stipa tenuissima from Gerry Price, the Coastal Gardener. To this will be added orange Libertia which has white flowers in summer. Overall the effect will be to provide a modern coastal planting scheme to enhance the view in King s Road and from Church Road for visitors and locals. If you are interested in helping with any future projects or planting maintenance then contact Ian Graham via the Parish Office or pop along to a Green Towns meeting which are advertised in the usual village locations. 17

13 The Green Towns Steering Group.... provides information about local Litter Picks and Beach Cleans. These are voluntary community enterprises organised by Bembridge Green Towns Steering Group with support from Bembridge Parish Council. This year they have teamed up with The Keep Britain Tidy Campaign to Spring Clean Britain. A number of Beach Cleans are organised, running from March through to September. Starting at different points, usually at 10am, volunteers are provided with bags, gloves and litter pickers and make their way to Bembridge Point, doing a sweep around the sand dunes area to end up at the Tollgate Cafe, who kindly support this initiative by providing well-earned refreshments. The aim is to keep our beautiful beaches clean and safe for all users... If you would like to join in and for dates, please contact: the Parish Council Office on , have a look at their website: bembridgepc.org.uk or find them on Facebook A big thank you to all Litter Pickers!! 18

15 St Michael s Catholic Church We do not normally publish obituaries but we have to make an exception for Yvonne Rowles who died in March. As a devoted and key member of St. Michaels, she was responsible for the St. Michael s entries for years. She was a member of the Parish News Committee for a long time. At St. Michael s, Yvonne was a member of the choir and for a considerable time she organised the readers at our Church. She was an enthusiastic member of the Isle of Wight Catholic History Society and she helped to organise outings to places of particular significance. She wrote several interesting publications. She organised and ran the CAFOD stall each year at the Combined Churches Fair and raised hundreds of pounds for this charity. She represented St. Michael s on many ecumenical planning and social events and she was closely involved with the Women s World Day of Prayer. Her loss is immeasurable and she is irreplaceable. St. Michaels owes Yvonne a great debt of thanks. Requiescat in pace. As one of the Lenten duties is Arms Giving, parishioners of St. Michael s and St. Mary s Ryde, have taken home small collecting boxes and during Lent have been filling the boxes with coins (silver we hope). At the end of Lent all the money collected will be divided between the Open Arms charity and Aspire, Ryde. Both charities help those in need. 20

22 100 Years of the RAF BEMBRIDGE FLOWER FESTIVAL 2018 For a century the Royal Air Force has been an essential part of this country s defences, and taken part in campaigns all over the world. This year s Flower Festival in Holy Trinity Church will remind us of the many roles it has been called on to play, and mark the year of its origin by recalling the seaborne base here in Bembridge. RAF Seaplane Base, Bembridge Harbour 1918 Interest in the topic has led to many interesting contacts, including a message from Peter Chick about Albert Durston. He was the Flight Commander at the seaplane base in Bembridge, but on 1 April 1918 became an RAF Major (aeroplane and Seaplane) Squadron Commander RAF Bembridge. He later retired in 1946 as an Air Marshall. He was twice mentioned in despatches and won the Air Force Cross.Peter Chick writes that he too was in the RAF from the age of 15 for 30 years. To find out more about our links with the RAF and its fine history come to Holy Trinity Church from: Saturday May 26 th to Wednesday May 30 th for the Flower Festival. In addition there will be a talk on the Wednesday evening at 7.30 by retired Wing Commander Mike Brooke entitled Three Fighters in Three Wars. Mike has written four books about his life. Mike joined the RAF in 1962 and by the time he retired in 1994 he had flown around 7500 flying hours and 140 types of aircraft including helicopters (but not seaplanes). He was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1984 by Queen Elizabeth. He has spent 8 years as a Test Flying consultant. Admission is free, donations welcome. 29

26 Bembridge Bowling Hope Springs Eternal As you read this, the 2018 season will have been in progress for a week or two. This will be a season of some significance for the club as at its end in the middle of September, the bowling green will be dug up and relaid. The club has been playing on the existing green in Mitten Road since 1922 and despite the best endeavours of many green keepers and volunteers it is beginning to show its age and the lack of modern drainage has led to an increase in the number of days lost as a result of bad weather. The new green should provide a far better surface on which to play and should lessen the number of occasions on which poor shots are blamed on the vagaries of the green rather than the inadequacies of the bowler. Bowling, together with cricket, is a sport that relies heavily on the quality of the playing surface to provide the best chance of producing a good quality of play. At the end of the day, however, that good quality of play does all depend on the skill of individual bowlers. The beginning of any season provides a wonderful time of high expectations for bowlers. Before a bowl is bowled, it is possible to look forward to days of unbroken sunshine and almost unbroken success both individually and for the team. Those days of last season when games were lost as a result of one s shortcomings in the skill department have conveniently been erased from the memory bank and the season ahead holds the promise of success and acclamation. This happy honeymoon period all too soon comes up against harsh reality and the penny soon drops that you have gone through the same process at the start of many previous seasons with the same results. Perhaps it is time for some extra coaching and more practice. The season ahead will provide opportunities not only for the competitive bowler but also for the bowler who prefers the more relaxed and social atmosphere of tourist matches against clubs from the mainland. There will also be club competitions open to all club members during the season culminating in a weekend of finals in September. The start of the season is a time to welcome new members to the club but also to reflect on those whose funerals we attended during the winter and who will be sadly missed. For those who are interested in joining the club, whether experienced bowlers or beginners, please contact: Chris Emms Tel: or David Brown Tel: Gerald Rees (Press Officer Tel: ) 34

He was an extremely good speaker and had some wonderful pictures to illustrate his talk. These beautiful creatures have such great personalities and have a great way of communicating. It was obvious how passionate Mike was about his subject and he certainly had the attention of the whole audience. After our usual break and refreshments the business of the meeting prevailed. Many of us are busy knitting, crocheting and felting poppies for November in the village. Bembridge will look amazing if this lot are anything to go by. There is also a repeat of the Tea and Trains afternoon for the Hospice in the garden of Dot and Brian Harrison. This will take place on: Saturday June 2nd at 1, Lincoln Way Bembridge from 2-00pm to 4-00pm WEATHER PERMITTING. All are welcome. Sally has a few exciting activities in store for us during the summer. The first will be a fashion show at EWM in Ryde. Annette was pleased to report that we came joint fourth in the Bumann Shield event which took place on April 14th. She thanked everyone who helped on that occasion. Our next coffee morning will be in the village hall on July 14th so put the date in your diary. Phyl Liddiard won the best bloom competition with Gilly Chubb second and Eve Dyer third The next meeting will be on May 1st and the speaker will be Christine Broom on Born to be a Farmer We meet in the Methodist church hall at 7-30pm. Any lady wishing to join us will be made most welcome 38 Dot Harrison Press Secretary

30 Saturday 12 May 2018 Plant Sale and Coffee Morning EXOTIC EDIBLES FROM THE CARIBBEAN Sugar cane, coffee and bananas are traditionally thought of as the staple products of the Caribbean, an archipelago of hundreds of tropical islands. But there are many more crops which thrive in the fertile soil and near-constant temperatures. Many don t adapt to our more changeable climate but there are some plants which can be grown successfully in our gardens. Callaloo Seed should be sown in April under cover and planted out in a sunny spot. The colourful leaves have a watercress/spinach flavour and can be used like spinach. Picking the shoot tips will encourage more leaf growth, or you can leave the plants to flower in summer and then pro-duce edible protein-rich seed. Chilli Scotch Bonnet Here are a few: Achocha This is a climbing plant which can reach 5m (16 ). It grows best under cover, producing flowers in mid-summer and cucumber-like fruit which can be eaten raw or stirfried. This is a hot chilli of the habanero type, used widely throughout the Caribbean. The chillis are shaped like a Chinese lantern and ripen from green to red. Sow seed in a heated propa-gator in February. Taro This perennial with large heart-shaped leaves on long stems needs to be grown under cover. After two years the tubers can be harvested, then soaked, cooked and used in curries or spicy dishes. 41
