3 Messages of Easter Dear Friends We were recently faced with putting together a flat pack wardrobe - actually my husband was putting it together and I was supervising. All flat packs are the same was one of the first comments I heard as the box was opened and the instructions fell out. Pieces of wood with holes drilled in various places, a plastic bag full of various screws and fixings, a sealed bag of glue and a multipurpose tool. We d assembled a good variety of pieces of flat pack furniture, we knew what we were doing, we wouldn t need to use the instructions this time. After an hour the wardrobe was completed - so we thought until we noticed a piece of wood standing against the wall which turned out to be a shelf!! We are moving through the season of Lent, towards Palm Sunday when Jesus entered Jerusalem like a King; into Holy Week, Maundy Thursday; Good Friday when Jesus was crucified and then to the celebration of Easter Sunday when we celebrate that Jesus rose from the dead, and is with us now. These are very familiar true stories to many and are often familiar and we think we know them so well that we don t have to read them again. During this season, I pray that, however well we think we know the stories, we will hear new messages of hope from them this year, for Easter is more than Easter Eggs, the true message is life-giving, life-changing, life-saving and life-enhancing. Our group would urge you to join us at the Triangle Bereavement Group. We offer each other support and friendship with mutual encouragement to re-build and re-shape our lives. We meet once a month on a Wednesday afternoon at 3.00 pm in the Cloisters to share tea, coffee, cake and lots of chatting with others who will know exactly how you feel. The next meeting is 21st March. We also meet, informally, at The Spinnaker on a Wednesday morning at for coffee. You will be made very welcome and all you have to do is turn up! 4 Holy Week and Easter at Holy Trinity MAUNDY THURSDAY Thursday 29th March 7.00 pm Holy Communion in The Cloisters We will recreate something of the atmosphere of the upper room where Jesus met with his disciples for the last supper. A quiet refl ective service of Holy Communion in The Cloisters, including optional hand or feet washing,will allow space to think and pray, preparing ourselves for Good Friday. GOOD FRIDAY Friday 30th March am Walk of Witness We gather at St Michael s Church, Walls Road noon pm The Church will be open for private prayer and meditation 2.00 pm The Liturgy of Good Friday. A Service of readings, hymns and prayers where we accompany Jesus on his journey to the Cross EASTER DAY Sunday 1st April 8.00 am Holy Communion at St Luke s Chapel, using the Book of Common Prayer 9.00 am Open Doors, a short service for all the family at Holy Trinity 10.30am Parish Communion at Holy Trinity 6

5 An Island Legacy Bembridge author s book has raised 000s for charities The engraving left by George Brannon, shows a view of Bembridge, and the life of the harbour, in Below, a bird s eye view, taken from across St. Helen s Duver in 2016, shows the same scene today. Both illustrations, and this month s cover picture, are reproduced (by permission) from Ken Hicks recently published book An Island Legacy. The book runs to over 200 pages and most show careful comparisons of Island scenes and buildings, over two centuries apart. There are plentiful quotations from the original guide books, and Ken has added his own comments, often with interesting historical detail - he points out, for example, that the church shown in 1826 was soon to be demolished, to be replaced by the present Holy Trinity in There are several appendices, including a comprehensive summary of the life and works of the Brannon family, a record for which Ken believes future historians will be grateful. Over 800 copies of the book have been sold to date, enabling some 10,000 to be given to the Hospice and other Island charities... 8 there are still a few left!...ed.

6 All God s Creation is Very Good! The interdenominational movement of the Women s World Day of Prayer invites everyone to attend one of over 5,000 services being held on: Friday 2nd March with the title All God s Creation is Very Good! We will join an estimated 3 million people around the world that day in a service which has been written this year by the women of Suriname in South America. Starting in Samoa as the sun rises, and ending as the sun sets off the coast of American Samoa, the service will have been translated into more than 95 languages and 1000 dialects as we are reminded that we have responsibilities in caring for this wonderful world we live in. With its vast rainforest and wealth of resources, Suriname asks us to pray for conservation and the protection of wildlife, through an awareness of pollution, misuse and abuse, as well as for the situation in Suriname and concerns for the future. This is not simply a day of prayer for women, but for everyone who cares about our world and those who live in it. 7 Warm Hearts Warm Stones Warm Bones The Friends of Holy Trinity have set themselves an amazing task this year to renew the central heating system in Holy Trinity, which is getting past its sell by date. Listening to Tim Daykin on Radio Solent this Sunday morning in January, who had recently taken the service at a Church which hadn t had any heating since October, reminded me of how cold Holy Trinity can be without heat. The heat is very necessary for the Stones of the building in trying to control the damp. We also have a duty of care to make sure people who are visitingholy Trinity, for whatever reason, feel warm. There is nothing worse than the cold getting to your Bones! So, The Friends are looking for Warm Hearts to help them achieve their aim. The boiler is enormous and in order to be replaced, the outside wall will have to be removed. Then of course other bits and pieces will also have to be replaced. There are also other repairs to be done in Holy Trinity and so our target this year will be 40,000. How can you help. By supporting our fundraising activities this year which will include the Secret Gardens of Bembridge, Bridge Afternoon, Talks, Cream Teas and our Grand Spring Draw which we are launching mid March (tickets 1 each). There will be many fabulous prizes, to include an original framed oil painting, and an original framed water colour of Holy Trinity, both by renowned artist Alex Williams. Tickets will be available from the Ink Shop in Lane End and after the Sunday morning services in St. Lukes and Holy Trinity. Look out for adverts regarding our activities, but one for your diary today is: Wednesday 30th May 7.30pm in Holy Trinity.An illustrated Talk by ex RAF Test Pilot- Three fighters from three wars. This ties in with the annual Village Flower Festival, the theme being 100 years of the RAF. During the evening the Spring Draw will take place too. You can become a Friend of Holy Trinity, if you aren t already one. Their new leaflet is available at the back of Holy Trinity giving more information about what they have achieved since they were formed in Olive Light

Bembridge Green Towns Steering Group are organising a grand Litter Pick on Saturday 3rd March 10am, starting at 3 points Steyne Park/Lane End and Beach Road. Bembridge Parish Council will supply black bags and gloves and arrange collection. The groups will spread out to include all areas, not just public footpaths. Afterwards tea and biscuits will be served at BYCC.Park. Across the UK organisations such as the Campaign for the Preservation of Rural England (CPRE), and the Ramblers Association, clubs, schools, Scouts, Guides and youth groups are all involved. Absence of Litter is an important criteria in The Best Kept Village Competition so please help us make Bembridge even better. If you are aware of any particularly bad grot spot areas that need urgent attention please inform the Parish Offi ce. 18 Bembridge Windmill WI Well they say March roars in like a lion and after all the recent cold and at times fairly wintry and windy weather they could be right this month, although the weather has defi nitely been kind at times too and we have had some really lovely crisp sunny days to enjoy in between. But as usual nothing stops or deters members here at Bembridge Windmill WI from enjoying and taking part in the programme activities on off er. Gill, our President, welcomed everyone to the Meeting and then with a tinge of sadness spoke of the loss of one of our founder members Dorothy who sadly was no longer with us. A lovely kind lady who enthralled us over the years with her many stories of her varied and interesting life both here and in India and who will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her. Our thoughts are with her family at this sad time. The evening s programme was then outlined by Gill and together with other members of the Committee details of our recent and forthcoming activities were given starting with Breakfast Club which as always was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed as was the company and lovely Lunch at The Propeller but it is not all eating of course, enjoyable as this is!!! A most enjoyable Outing with our members joining Creekside WI for a bit of Curling (Well we have had the Winter Olympics!) was so much fun and full of friendship. Our Craft Club was busy making and full of chatter and good company and our Topical Talk Club talked their socks off with lots of interesting and relevant subjects that had been raised for discussion. Book Club had also met and discussed their latest book The Help which was generally very well received and enjoyed and are now getting their teeth into a Murder Mystery and will be meeting again in April (hopefully having solved all the clues perhaps!) With Spring in the air and not too far away it will not be too long before members will have to clean and polish those walking boots ready to get out and about in the local countryside too. Gill then gave details of the Bembridge Windmill WI day booked for April at The Spinnaker which everyone was looking forward to immensely. She also mentioned the Street Fair on May 28th and our fund raising coff ee morning on the 23rd June in the Village Hall so members could book these dates in their diaries. There was also mention of lots of activities organised by Federation for members to enjoy and participate in. She then introduced our speaker for the evening Chris Orchin about his time volunteering in Kenya. Chris is an accomplished photographer and had many wonderful and stunning photos to share together with his stories of the children which were wonderful. It was an absolutely captivating evening enjoyed by us all. Our next meeting is on April 17th at The Cloisters at 7.30pm when we will be having a visit from Bunbury Bees. 19 Bembridge RNLI Lifeboat Guild News... Lifeboat shouts : In January RNLB Alfred Albert Williams (Tamar All-Weather Lifeboat 16-17) was launched on 29th at around 8pm at the request of UK Coastguard to investigate a Mayday call that had been received, with very weak reception; the only information that was heard was "Curious Parrot" and Shanklin. The Alfred Albert Williams initially conducted a search off Shanklin (during which the Y boat was launched to talk to some anglers on the shore) and subsequently further to the west past St Catherine s. Having found nothing, the HM Coastguard agreed that she could return to Bembridge. She was recovered by 10.40pm. A cold evening on the water for no result but luckily no tragedy has been reported subsequently Special RNLI award: A presentation was made to Trish Beckett for producing and marketing three diferent jigsaws of the Bembridge Station. These have already raised considerable extra revenue and are available at various outlets locally. Record School Visits: Deborah Meadows and her team have had a very large number of school visits this year already. One school alone contributed 500 in total but, even more importantly, this success means an increasingly large number of young people are made aware both of the work the RNLI do and the all-important safety messages of the Respect the Water Campaign. Opening Hours for March: The offshore boathouse and RNLI shop will be open every day throughout March from pm. Volunteers: Everyone is more than welcome to meet members of the Bembridge Lifeboat Guild and get involved in supporting our efforts. 20 Bembridge Townswomen s Guild The speaker for Bembridge Townswomen s Guild this month was Paula from the Hearing and Sight Loss Association. She told us about the amalgamation of the two societies and the sort of varied problems she deals with on a daily basis. It is great to know in these days of cut backs and reduction of services that the home visits and assessments that she does are still free of charge. Did you know that your hearing loss begins between 15 and 19 years of age? No, Nor did I. Paula answered many questions from the ladies and even bought the equipment with her to test the hearing of as many ladies as wanted it. Annette our chairman, after a welcome cup of coffee continued with the business of the evening. In January our guild members went for a lovely lunch at the Yarbridge Inn, the food was delicious and the conversation stimulating. We are so lucky to have so many good Eateries on the island. The Federation timetable for the coming year was read out, the next event being the Bumann Shield presentation afternoon and a lot of ideas were aired. Sally told us about the trips out she has planned for the next few months and they sound really exciting. Supper Club will be held on February 20th at Foxes. Best blooms competition winners: Phyl Liddiard, Eve Dyer, and Annette Halls. Next meeting will be on March 6th at 7.30 pmin the Methodist Church hall. Any ladies who would like to join us will be made most welcome. 21 Cruise Ships passing March 2018 Summer must be coming... the Cruise Ships are coming back to the UK after only 7 visiting Southampton in February are scheduled this month. The following schedule of ships is strictly provisional and subject to alteration The ships generally arrive back in Southampton in the early morning and depart early evening as listed they pass Bembridge approximately an hour and a half later. 22 Friday, March 16th at 7:15pm Cacti and Succulents EXOTIC EDIBLES FROM SOUTH AMERICA There are many different foreign fruits and vegetables available in the shops nowadays, imported from all over the world. Some of them have been selected and bred to suit our climate, so that they can now be grown quite easily in our own gardens. South America is home to a huge range of edible plants, from the familiar such as potatoes and tomatoes to the more exotic. Here are a few you might like to try: Cape Gooseberry The fruit look like yellow cherry tomatoes and have a sharp yet sweet taste. They ripen in early autumn and can be eaten raw or made into jam. Sow seed under cover in February and pot on when the roots show. Plant out in a sunny spot, stake and keep wellwatered Yacon Mashua Start the tubers off in pots in March and plant out in a sunny position in well-drained soil. The tubers have a pepper and aniseed taste and can be used in place of potatoes. The leaves and flowers can be used in salads and have a flavour similar to nasturtiums. Seeds can be pickled. Tubers should be planted 50cm (18 ) apart in fertile well-drained soil in full sun. They will grow up to 1.5m (4 ) tall, so given them plenty of space. The tubers, which have a pear, celery and apple flavour, are excellent in stir-fries. Oca Again it is the tubers which are harvested. They should be planted direct in May 30cm (12 ) apart in a sunny position. Water well. They have a nutty flavour and can be used as you would new potatoes
