2 A Word from Fr Jeremy This will be the last time I write to you as your Team Rector, since I shall be retiring from this post and moving to Ripon in the summer. My last services will be on 23 rd July. During the last 6 years it has been a real privilege to serve you here throughout the team, and I shall miss everybody very much. I m writing this as the General Election Campaign kicks in. By the time you read this we shall all be glad when it s all over. The important question for me is What would Jesus do?. What principles would be important to Jesus? The whole of Jesus life is lived under the rule of love, and within this all people are equal. Only the rich who share their wealth with the poor will find themselves in God s kingdom alongside the poor. That would seem to suggest that at the heart of the tax system should be the principle that the rich are taxed more heavily than the poor to ensure the poor do not go without. It was important to Jesus that the sick were made whole again. Healing was important to him and he did a lot of it. In our own time health costs what it costs and is expensive. A properly funded NHS would be close to Jesus heart. The earth is God s creation, and we are its stewards. That means that we have a responsibility to look after the world, to ensure that there is food and drink for all, and to hand it on to the next generation in good health. What we today call the Green movement would certainly gain Jesus approval. Jesus calls us to follow him, to live in his way championing his way. 5 When the penny drops. This is Wendy Ramsbottom's story. Well l blame my mother really, when my twin sister and l were small my mother asked my older sister and her friend to introduce Robina and l to Sunday school at our local Methodist church, Wesley hall Thornes Wakefield. I was very excited about going but found it dull and boring. So became naughty and made my own fun. The same thing happened the second week. For some unknown reason we didn't go the third Sunday??? The penny hadn't dropped... At the age of 10 Robina and l wanted to join the guides, Wesley hall did not have a Guide group so my mother made enquiries at St. George's church where Robina and had been baptised and my mother had been a member of the women's social club for a number of years. Robina and l did not stay long in the guides -- we found it a bit cissy!! Because we had done most things Guides were expected to learn. Especially camping out in the garden and frying mushrooms on a campfire for breakfast. We didn't attend St. George's church very often but we did go to mums social club where they had children s. On one occasion a fancy dress party had been organised. I was really excited about this... Until my mother produced two golden coloured crepe paper dresses complete with head dress band -- saying Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam!, I complained bitterly saying, "But l wanted to be Biggles!!!!! The Penny had still not dropped. It was many years later when l attended church again, l was 19 my sister Joyce was getting married. It had been decided that link with both Wesley Hall and St. George's had long been broken--- l think it ŵas my mother who suggested they got married at Wakefield Cathedral. Joyce and husband to be would invite Robina and l to Choral Evensong each Sunday... I was totally enthralled by the whole experience especially the sermons ( the word) telling us about God's love for us his readiness to forgive and to strengthen us in a personal relationship!!!! "The penny had finally dropped"... Robina and l often laugh about those golden paper crepe dresses... And Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam,,, and we say "well He certainly claimed us in the end... Robina left the cathedral to become a nun at St. Peter's convent Horbury teaching in their school, later headmistress and eventually becoming Rev. Mother Superior. I got married at Wakefield cathedral and moved south had a family and in later years returned to the cathedral and was made the first woman Head Server,,, a post l held for 10 years... You see the penny did eventually drop... And it's alright l can still be naughty,, 5

6 George One - Dragons Zero. As usual Rothwell Church of England Primary Academy started the new term with a service at Holy Trinity. However this term they chose to build the service around the figure of St. George. Following a warm opening to the service by the Principal, Mr Foulke, Year Five took control and led the service. The first part was, Who Was St. George? In this section the congregation was told about the background to St. George and the many, often contradictory ideas of where he came from. The second part dealt with St. George today and the many countries as well as England to whom he is a Patron Saint. Here there couldn t have been a single individual in church who didn t learn something new! The final part was, What can we learn from St. George? Here the students demonstrated a clear understanding of their research and, most impressively were able to distinguish reality from symbolism. When I hear nine year olds talk like this, I have no fears for the quality of English Education. The whole service was bound together with impassioned singing by the entire school and was brought to a close by the Rev. Sheena summing up the importance of St. George. Finally, a member of Year 5 led the congregation in prayer. 6

14 Welcome to Holy Trinity C of E Academy, Rothwell 195 children left Rothwell C of E Primary Academy for the May Day bank holiday and returned to Holy Trinity C of E Academy, Rothwell four days later! Whilst the building, teachers, uniform etc all stayed the same the name change marked the start of the schools new journey as part of a new Multi Academy Trust. The idea to change our name came during our very successful SIAMs inspection last year when the inspector asked if we had ever considered sharing a name with our Church. I later spoke to Father Jeremy about this and we both felt that this would be an incredible way to cement links between our church, parish and school. The opportunity to make this a reality came when Abbey Multi Academy Trust agreed that Rothwell C of E could join them this year. Following consultation with parents, the diocese and Abbey MAT we decided upon our new name which became legal on 1 st May as we became an Abbey school. We join Abbey Grange C of E Academy, St Chads C of E Primary, Manston St James Primary Academy, Bishop Young Academy and Lightcliffe Academy. As a Diocesan Multi Academy Trust, Abbey MAT have a commitment to working within caring Christian ethos. The vision is: To work in partnership to educate, nurture and empower As our school is built on Christian values of love, service, learning and challenge and these values mirror those of Abbey as we want our pupils to grow and develop academically, socially and spiritually. Our school is a special place to learn.. Just ask our parents and pupils. Naturally we are keen that Holy Trinity builds on the success of Rothwell C of E Academy. One of my commitments is to make us the school of choice again in Rothwell. Being tucked away on Queensway means potentially being missed by people new to the area. Our new name centres us firmly in our parish. If you know anybody that has a child that is due to start school in September this year please tell them we still have places available if they would like to come and see what makes our school, Holy Trinity, very special. 14
